Redefining the Desktop PC

Challenging the essence of how we define a desktop PC, GIGABYTE engineers have developed an ultra compact PC with a stylish design based around an anthracite aluminum frame and glass surface chassis. Ideal for a broad range of computing applications at home or in the office, the BRIX expounds sheer simplicity and convenience. With a broad choice of processors covering the entire performance spectrum, the BRIX sets a new standard for desktop miniaturization that makes it perfect as a discreet HTPC/multimedia hub, an ultra-low power PC for the family, an office PC or as a digital signage unit.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Media Center PC

Pros: - Tiny
- Accepts 2.5" hard drive and mSATA drive
- Fast enough hardware for HTPC duties (plays 1080p files flawlessly)
- Dead silent
- Runs cool
- Attractive

Cons: - Does not come with remote control
- The BIOS on my unit is two versions old and I was unable to get the BIOS flashing software to function

Other Thoughts: Because the unit is so quiet, I sometimes forget to turn it off before I go to bed-

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very small, very quick, all Windows drivers included, optical S/PDIF output, works great as a HTPC.

Cons: Horrible support. Gigabytes email support system is easy to use but that's all that can be said good about it. I asked a question on 9/11 and didn't get a response until 9/15, and the response given made it obvious that they didn't really even read my question. That's all the bad I can say, because it really is an awesome little PC.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap

Pros: Works decent enough for WHS2011, using it for NFS sharing for a Orico 4-Bay USB 3.0 enclosure to serve video files for my WDTVs

Cons: Would of been nice to have WHS drivers that would work for the BT module, but not really all that important.

Other Thoughts: You would think Gigabyte (and Realtek) would offer full WHS drivers with these, they have to know a lot of folks are using them as miniature servers

5 out of 5 eggsGood low-cost server

Pros: Cheap
Efficient
Reasonably powerful
Gigabit ethernet
Half-size mini-PCIe slot on motherboard comes populated with free wifi/bluetooth card
Very quiet
Comes with a little rubber stopper for closing the 3.5mm jack (not like that's going to make/break the deal, but a cool little freebie they didn't need to include)

Cons: Runs a little on the hot side (50-60 degrees Celsius depending on load at 80 degrees Fahrenheit ambient)
Actively cooled (although, for what it packs, it'd be hard for it not to be)
Processor in mine is a binned i5, so be aware these aren't packing top-shelf components (although I'll admit I've never seen a top-shelf Celeron to begin with).
Speccy tells me virtualization is disabled - the product page for the processor says the processor supports it, however, so I suspect the motherboard doesn't.

Other Thoughts: Product page (as of writing this) indicates that the machine accepts DDR3 memory. THIS IS NOT CORRECT - the computer REQUIRES DDR3L memory (the manual recommends 1.35V). Make sure not to make the same mistake I did!

The hard-drive mount is a little odd (it affixes to the bottom of the machine inside the case). It's sized so you can put a 3.5 inch HDD in it, but it works fine with 2.5 inch drives.

I've set it up as a Windows 2012 R2 server, and it's working without issue so far. I'm quite pleased - besides my SNAFU with the memory, my entire setup (including 2TB external, 120GB SSD, and 8GB DDR3L memory) only ran me $400 before shipping. I'd recommend this machine to a friend if they were looking for something cheap and power-efficient.
