4 out of 5 eggsMSI stonewalled rebate (attn: Newegg)

Pros: Exactly what I sought in small form factor box.
Worked out of the box. Initially ran a linux distro off the SD card but then installed an IDE (bought the Rosewill IDE<=>Sata2 adapter from Newegg). Nice piece.

If you don't have SATA drive you'll also need power Y-splits and do SATA power with a Molex connector.

Be careful in installing drives. There is a small 4 pin connector which has to be disconnected to get the drive cage out. It CAN be replugged into an immediately adjacent identical receptacle...and make the unit non-functional. Just watch the (dis-)assembly.

WAS concerned re: IO and linux...but the small Adesso mini-trackball keyboard was fine...all USB, of course.

Lovely compact little thing ...just right for a kitchen application

Cons: The rebate application was both difficult and rejected sort of 'off the bat'...
Very unresponsive rebate tracking system.

Sort of standard for the whole rebate scam so widely practiced.

Other Thoughts: Newegg should be more responsible. [Little like the Department of the Interior and BP...in the Gulf...isn't]

I'm just dumb - I keep getting sucked in.

The instructions are typical Chinese start-up. Very garbled,
sketchy but they'll improve as these things always do.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Headless Server

Pros: This thing is perfect as a Linux headless server. I have Ubuntu server upgraded to 10.4 on this with two 2TB drives in software raid 1. I use this for samba, ssh, ampache music streaming, sftp and other things. It runs basically 24/7. The Ampache streaming over the net is flawless. I have listened to my music from many different states.

Cons: Doesn't cook eggs and bacon.

Other Thoughts: For a low power server, you really can't beat it. I think this could easily be a file server in a small biz environment, at least with a linux OS. My CPU load on this is almost nothing and I am backing up huge image files to it almost daily.

1 out of 5 eggsMultiple issues

Pros: Small form factor, low power consumption. But read my cons.

Cons: I was given 3 of these over the course of a month from Newegg. The first one had a dead VGA port. The second one had a broken RAM slot. And the third had another dead VGA port. I looked online to see if I was doing something wrong, but I definitely wasn't. Everyone else's seemed to work just fine.

Other Thoughts: While I was extremely mad with all the broken products, Newegg (in their defense) is not the manufacturer, and was helpful with it all. While their replacement policy was a pain (had to wait for the package to ship from NJ to CA, wait for it to be approved, and then wait for a shipment from the distribution center to my house again), it didn't cost me anything. They supplied all the shipping labels.

When the third came, I called and explained all that had happened, and the woman I got was very helpful. I got a full refund, plus a gift card. While I still kinda want the MSI Wind, I'm not eager to wait another week for a 4th broken product. I will buy something similar not made by MSI.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent File Server

Pros: Excellent choice for NAS, primarily for back up. Have had it running for several months now (using FreeNAS on CF card) and 2 WD 1TB drives in non-RAID configuration. Size is perfect, quiet, just sits in the corner and works.

Cons: Like others say, getting the CF card in was a pain, but I shouldn't have to get to it often, so I'm ok with that.

Other Thoughts: It sees 3 drives I have in an external USB enclosure, although I haven't tried mounting them in FreeNAS yet. Overall, a good choice for me.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat box

Pros: I have two of these and two more on the way. Have one running FreeNAS on a CF card with two 1TB drives in RAID. The second is running ClearOS for a web server. Both have 1GB RAM. They are both quite snappy for what I am using them for.

Cons: Getting to the CF card is awkward. I've cut slots in the sides for access without splitting the case.

Other Thoughts: Neat little units!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for a NAS

Pros: Great little box for the price. I boot off a CF card and run Freenas on it. It uses little power as well. Certainly great for a single drive NASappliance.

Cons: have to take out the motherboard to put the CF card in.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes everything asked of it

Pros: Using this as a barebones file/print server. Installed WHS on a 500GB WD green drive and BAM, haven't turned it off it since then. The current uptime = the servers lifetime (55 days). It is normally very quiet, except when doing anything CPU intensive (moving files), in which case the fan does become temporarily noticeable. I was worried about the power brick getting too warm with constant use, but it only gets lukewarm.

Cons: I can't think of a use for this besides a file server. The atom is notoriously weak (albeit power-sipping), and this is one of its limited uses.

I didn't expect to have to take the entire thing apart to install the HDD, but oh well, it wasn't difficult.

Other Thoughts: WHS is great.

3 out of 5 eggsMostly works!

Pros: For a linux/windows box, its great for an Atom based barebones kit. Filled mine with random parts from other projects, and was quite happy with the result. Very quiet, easy to get up and running.

Cons: Cannot get PXE booting to work at all. Have tried multiple switches of different speeds, crossover cables, BIOS flashing, everything I can think of, and nothing works.

Other Thoughts: This would be a 5 star review if PXE worked, which is the one feature I needed to work. If you're looking for a cheap box for web surfing or even file server, SSH server, or anything along those lines, its a quality product.

5 out of 5 eggsThe little computer that could!

Pros: - Decent price.
- Small form factor.
- CF slot on the motherboard.
- SD/MMC card reader.
- Tons of USB ports.
- Low power draw.
- External power supply (less internal heat)
- Quiet
- Gig ethernet.
- Ubuntu 9.1 server installed flawlessly on this little gem. Works great as a NAS using Webmin and MDADM. Raid 1 with two Hitachi 1 TB drives. No Problem.

Cons: - No expansion slots (thus the small form factor)
- CF slot only can be accessed by taking out the mobo. (we all know this, not a big deal if you gave some tech knowledge)
- Power supply plug seats loosely. (not a huge deal for me since its a headless NAS in my basement)
- Return policy terrible on this. Once you buy it your stuck with it! I mistakenly got this one instead of the dual core version for ten bucks more and wanted to return it. I found out i cannot! Come on Newegg. Good thing this is a good machine. Just make sure this is what you want.

Other Thoughts: This machine is amazing as a NAS. Ubuntu 9.1 server + Webmin + MDADM = NAS heaven. I see reviews about how this machine doesn't make a good media center. I cannot comment. But for NAS its awesome. I have heard FreeNAS runs well on this.
