Runs Like The Wind
- Pros: Far exceeded my expectations. Bought this for my wife's birthday to replace her aging machine. This thing does everything she needs quicker than any name brand computer I've used (which is a lot since I'm a broadband technician working in people's houses everyday), and that's including Core 2 Duo machines. Granted, we don't use it for anything more than web/office and occasional video, and it's running Kubuntu Linux, but it's far more capable than many might think. I'll give an example: I have WinXP Professional running under Sun VirtualBox, and during the install (which only took 15 min.) I could still use the computer on the Linux side with no slowdown whatsoever! The bottom line is anyone who doesn't game or do any heavy tasks will be more than pleased with this machine.
- Cons: Would not turn on when first put together. Racked my brain for a while, and finally after clearing the memory with the jumper pin, it booted. Hooray! However, the power button does not work at all, the only way to turn it back on after shutting down is to yank the power and plug it back in. The led behind the button is lit, but the switch does absolutely nothing. I don't know if it's the physical switch, the wires going to it, or something to do with the BIOS, but if anyone has had this same issue and knows what the answer is please post here.
- Other Thoughts: To those that have had issues with temperature: The picture of this upright on the stand shown on newegg is wrong. The cpu has no fan, only a heatsink. One side of the machine is ventilated, and the case fan is on the back on the opposite side. My first instinct was to set it upright with the vent side facing up as is pictured on newegg, but after the fan kept coming on at full speed, I thought about it. The vent is on the side next to the cpu, and the fan is opposite. Since heat rises, setting it upright with the vent on top and fan on bottom makes it fight the natural action of heat rising. Set it with the vent on bottom and fan on top and this is completely fixed. The fan has not had to kick in to high gear ONE time since I did this. I don't know how it acts flat on a desk, but I thought I should let people know.
1080p?
- Pros: Easy to assemble
small nice media center cheap under $300 to build This has got to be the best media center I have built for under $300 use a usb soundcard for dts to reciever ..vga displays just as good as my hdmi hooked to ps3
- Cons: HEAT!
NOISE! NO PCI CARD ONLY 4 USB ON BACK NO HDMI
But these are all fixable!! You can mount a 40mm fan to the motherboard by the heat sink using Velcro.. This will blow the heat off of the heat sink. I replaced stock fan with a 60mm VANTEC SF6025L Set to 5v and I now have temp down to 33.C playing 1080p and It is nearly silent.. Plenty good enough for what im using it for..
- Other Thoughts: No matter what people say this will do 1080p using core avc. and only using 50-60% of cpu.. 720p play flawless using 15-30% cpu I'm using this as a media center and it plays everything. I have xp and Media Portal which to me is the best media center software out and it's free!!! I would like to have waited for the ion but as long as you are not playing games if youwant to build a wmc This works great!!!

Quiet, energy efficient, & small
- Pros: Extremely quiet, energy efficient, low heat, small footprint, external power supply, accepts standard size CDROM & 3.5" hard drive
- Cons: weak processor, analog video only (can see slight refresh problem), no PS2 port, needs better airflow for CPU cooling
- Other Thoughts: I added some cardboard air guides to direct most airflow over the CPU and now you barely hear it, until the hard drive or cd-ROM kick in. The processor seems to greatly limit the system, it seems slower than the computer it replaced. This thing looks great and I could see using it as a media pc, if it had digital video out and my wifes approval.
Buy this thing if you leave it on all the time, even as a server or a backup solution. It serves as my wifes main computer for email and internet.
They are finally making computers that fit my needs with a cost that I can't resist.
Great Little Machine
- Pros: Small, quiet, reasonably priced dual-core system. The processor is powerful enough to play 720p video from the harddrive, but 1080p is a little out of it's reach. The wireless antennae is solid and gets good reception. Onboard audio and video are all sufficient for media-center type installations, or even if you wanted to use the computer as a nettop. Comes with a nice stand. The CF and the media reader are a nice touch, and could be very useful.
- Cons: Okay, I'm being very picky with these, overall the system is wonderful, but if MSI wanted a perfect system, these are the things I'd change:
No wireless card included, you have to buy a mini-pci wireless card The SATA cables feel cheap; if you have a bad connection corruption can happen Doesn't come with a screw for the PCI slot, and it uses a very, very small screw.
- Other Thoughts: As always, be careful when installing components, the sheet metal used in most PCs can and will cut your hands up if you slip.
Current setup: 320GB WD 2GB G.Skill laptop RAM Samsung DVD Ubuntu with SSH/VNC
Running great as a media center.
Good for certain applications
- Pros: Small size, low power consumption, low cost, decently powerful
Despite all the negatives, the current machine has been running for over a month. As I used it as a file server, it is left on all the time. Speed of file server is quite good, and the bandwidth is more limited by my 54Mb router.
- Cons: Quality, video flickering, poor insulation for hard drive noise, internal layout, cpu runs very hot
There are three major cons I have. First is the defective unit (mentioned below). Second, I hooked this machine to a 22 inch LCD through the VGA port and set the resolution at 1440x900, which is already lower than the max on the LCD. There is still flickering on the screen, especially when it is accessing hard drive. I don't know if things will be better if a smaller and lower-resolution screen is used, or this is a specific problem of this particular unit. I noticed the noise from hard drive is really loud. Fairly speaking, these hard drives are not super quiet type, but using them in other cases are much quieter. The internal layout could be improved as well. As mentioned in other reviews, the hard drive bay is right above heat sink. The CPU is very hot to the touch even after running for 2 mins. I hope this chip does not get burned out soon.
- Other Thoughts: The first machine I got was defective--it looks brand new, but refuses to load cmos and hangs right after power-up. So I RMAed it back to newegg. Newegg sent me a replacement, which is clearly a return product with many signs of previous usage. Fortunately, this used replacement worked and is still working for me.
I used this machine primarily as a linux file server, and occasionally as a internet browsing computer . It serves this function well. Runs graphical user interface with decent speed, but I do doubt how it could handle heavier work. I placed two 1 TB hard drives in it as a redundant raid. The machine uses ~36W at idle, which is not far from what I read from other comments. Putting the second hard drive in the 5'' bay requires adapters or drilling holes.
