This review is from: MSI Cubi-001BUS Intel Broadwell U PCH-LP 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel HD Graphics Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: Sorry about all the nearly duplicate reviews but they did not appear so I resubmitted and now that they all appear I am unable to delete or edit them.

This is an update; I installed an SSD with Windows 7 pre-loaded and then upgraded it to Windows 10. No BIOS changes or updates of any kind were required. It works flawlessly on the Celeron version ($110 after rebate) and I can not tell the difference between it and my i5 desktop with 3.7 Ghz CPU. Both have 4 GB Crucial RAM. It streams HD video without any stuttering and CPU core temps are very cool.

All new music/photos/videos are auto loaded to a usb stick so no SD card is required.

Many games are running in fairly high settings so until I spring for the latest games, the gaming pc is relegated to sitting in the back room.

Cons: None. I now use this (Celeron version) for my home theater as streaming Netflix is the most intensive purpose that I have for it.

Other Thoughts: I3/I5/I7 would be a waste of money since this is not a high end gaming unit. Even 4 GB RAM is all that is required. Do not waste your money on high tech unless you have plenty to burn.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome little box

This review is from: MSI Cubi-001BUS Intel Broadwell U PCH-LP 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel HD Graphics Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: FOR ALL OF THE REVIEWERS/USERS WHO CAN'T GET THEIR BOXES TO POST, READ MY CONS
-Works with Linux OS
-Insanely fast (using Linux anyway)
-Ultra tiny form factor (you have to see it to believe it)
-Streams HD video no problem
-Comes with wifi/bluetooth card
-Can fit TWO SSD HD
-Simple* build (read below)

Cons: The only real con I would say is the DIMM situation. The RAM is extremely finicky so to speak. I have rebuilt computers, built from scratch, etc. This is my first barebone (which should be the easiest theoretically), but when I first put it together and pushed the power...nothing...would not post at all. One thing I noticed as I was assembling the device is that the DIMM slots don't feel like they are engaging very well (usually you have to push a little more)...maybe cheap slots? When istalling the RAM, these basically have little more resistance than if you were just to set the RAM in the slots. So I took the box apart, removed one RAM stick (leaving the one that felt the most secure) and booted...immediately got it to POST. Then reinserted the second RAM stick, pushed a little harder but still didn't really feel as secure as I would expect. Pushed the power button again, viola....I was off and running....and never looked back. Other than that, no problems at all...not worth removing an egg for the RAM situation. I would assume most people that can't get their boxes to work are having this problem...and I would recommend troubleshooting BEFORE saying DoA. Also, reading other reviews...the supported RAM selections are few and far between...so BE SURE YOU"RE BUYING COMPATIBLE RAM.

The only other thing I would say is make sure you assemble the bottom plate correctly (it's a little tricky...there are metal tabs that need to be inside the plate, which firms the box up when assembled properly).

Other Thoughts: I bought this box for a HTPC...and it is exactly what I was hoping it would be. The linux support online...well, they make it sound like you need to use windows...even in the owner's maual...YOU DO NOT. I use Linux Mint 17.2...works just fine....drivers and all. The only thing I had to do was change the audio default to HDMI from the terminal (it was defaulting to headphones for some reason).

And this thing little box is extremely fast! It boots so fast, I don't even see a boot or splash screen...just goes straight to desktop within seconds.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't take 2 sticks of RAM despite how advertised

This review is from: MSI Cubi-001BUS Intel Broadwell U PCH-LP 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel HD Graphics Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: Will boot with 1 stick of RAM, seems like a good mini-PC

Cons: On my second unit, neither will boot with 2 sticks of RAM in place. It will boot with 1 stick, but that's now how this is advertised. If all you're looking for is to put 1 stick in, maybe it will work for you, but I needed the 16GB this device is advertised to be able to use.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
Based on the symptom you reported, we suggest you checking following steps below since many reasons can cause the situation like this ,
1. Check and make sure that new hardware you install are firmly conencted.
2. Check your other major hardware’s added (memory, hard drive etc.) to ensure that they are not the cause of the issue.
3. If you need further assistant, please feel free to contact our technical support department directly at our toll free support number 888-447-6564 from M to F, 6am to 6pm Pacific standard Time.
