5 out of 5 eggsMakes a great frontend for MythTV

Pros: Small Size
Near silent operation during video playback and navigating MythTV menus
Fast bootup and shutdown, especially with SSD
All hardware compatible with Linux kernel, including built-in IR receiver
Excellent VDPAU support with proprietary Nvidia driver

Cons: None I can think of

Other Thoughts: I have been using MythTV for a long time, usually installed on left-over hardware, cobbled together.

This is the first "dedicated" hardware frontend I bought, and it exceeded my expectations.

I researched ahead of time that most of the included hardware would be supported under Fedora Linux. I did not expect that the built-in IR receiver would be supported, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the driver for it installed / loaded automatically. All I had to do to get my existing IR remote working was copy over my lircrc file from my old frontend.

The built-in Nvidia 640 video card supports VDPAU Advanced De-interlacing flawless on 1080i content - no tearing, stuttering, etc.

Audio over HDMI also is working, which is a welcome improvement over my previous hardware.

With 2-4GB RAM sticks and a Crucial 120GB SSD, Fedora 23 boots to the MythTV menu in about 8 seconds from a cold boot. Shutdown is about 2 or 3 seconds.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad but no Windows 10 support

Pros: Mine was not at all loud, in fact it was very quiet, but it was probably the video card fan he was hearing. I presume the fan is on all the time yet I do not hear it. I also like that you can have a m-sata drive and a hard drive. I actually intended to buy the one with the memory and hard drive already installed and got this by accident. So I ran to a computer store and picked up a 1 terrabyte 7200 RPM drive and 8GB of memory for about $150 or so (I was impatient). Windows 10 is now distributed on a USB drive. I had trouble booting from it, but after I installed windows 7 so I could actually install this, I found a BBS option in the bios that would have allowed me to boot from the USB drive, I believe. Has a lot of nice features for not a lot of money, like 4 USB slots, HDMI output, built in WIFI and bluetooth and so forth.

Cons: They don't officially support windows 10. I was able to get it to work, but the wi-fi doesn't work so I am still using my old USB wi-fi. I think they need more of an answer than we don't support it. People aren't going to run windows 7 forever and I hate windows 8

Other Thoughts: I read in a couple of other reviews about noise. This is in a bedroom and I don't hear it at all and keep it on 24x7, so perhaps this problem has been resolved.

2 out of 5 eggsI couldn't get past the noise...

Pros: Beefy little gaming computer for a decent price.
Takes dual-channel ram.
Can accept 2.5" SATA drive AND an mSATA drive.
Nice looking Power LED lighting circle thing.

Cons: That fan... It was not just loud, but constantly changed pitch and was VERY annoying. I tweeked the bios and it didn't help. Just very high pitched and adjusted all over the place.
It puts out a fair amount of heat.
It has a large power brick (larger than I felt it needed).
Not to mention, it was very thin plasticy feeling

Other Thoughts: If it weren't so noisey, I would have gotten the chance to really play with it. I got the OS down but at that point, I was already filling out the return form. I originally got this to compare to the Gigabyte Brix with the J1900 (under 1/2 the cost of this), knowing that the Brix had much lower end hardware (especially video). The Brix could do Team Fortress 2 on lowest settings without trouble but struggled on Left 4 Dead 2 when a lot of fire or zombies came around. If this box succeeded, I would abandon my streaming idea and use these. Sadly, the noise and head output swayed me away. Otherwise, couldn't tell you the experience of a game on it.
