1 out of 5 eggsNew Design Blows!!!

Pros: Small, efficient, low cost, does the job.

Cons: Their new design changed from having the hard drive in the top of the case to mounting it on the bottom, above the motherboard, BUT doesn't have enough room to mount a regular 2.5" hard drive without putting pressure on the SATA connector and motherboard!

Other Thoughts: Nothing was wrong with their previous design... why change???

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!!!!

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome little guy

Pros: This is a great mini server. I've installed fedora 16 and it works like charm. Within an hour of setting up, I've got a web, ntp and sync server.

Cons: Some of the screws were almost stripped, had to carefully remove them. The HDMI port is not aligned properly and had a hard time inserting the cable.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent little box

Pros: Very small, runs very quite, 2 memory slots for memory, has D525 which allows 64bit programs, runs WHS 2011 without issues

Cons: Runs hotter than I would like, hard drive is mounted to lid which traps the heat of the hard drive, case is very tight and you need to be careful of cable locations when replacing lid.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to be a headless server for a WHS 2011 installation. The installation worked without issues. I put in 4Gig of memory which was very inexpensive. If you buy one of these you need to remember that this is really designed for other company's to put their name on resell. The supply documentation is extremely limited. For my purposes that was just fine. The unit process power is pretty slow. I have used other Atom setups so I was kind of use to it, but you need to make sure your application won't overload the processors. As I said, the unit runs hotter than I would of expected. The mounting of the hard drive traps the heat. I did not have the problems of mounting the hard drive that others said, because I only used 2 screws on the side. If you had to put in all 4 it would be a pain. The box is not going to be moved so I felt this was acceptable.

3 out of 5 eggsAwesome, and has potential, but... the hardware is somewhat limited

Pros: Tiny little box, perfect of a Linux install. Had it up and running quickly with Ubuntu 12.10. All devices worked flawlessly.

Cons: For a dual monitor setup, this box will just not cut it. If you want dual displays, look at the ION box instead. OR, think about building another machine at 3x to 4x the cost.

Other Thoughts: I bought this box for a full-time Ubuntu install, and it seems like a promising install. But, the lack of video (dual output) support saddens me. Yes, I know that it has Intel video hardware, but none-the-less, I would have wished it could do more. Right now, I am searching for a bios update that might allow this feature to become more of a reality (more ram assignment to GPU). But, if there is anyone out there that is looking for a TINY Linux server or desktop that is going to be used for learning purposes, this could be the box for you. Also, you might try pairing it up with a mini-pci SSD, the performance of platter-based drives isn't all that much to write home about on this little box.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small and quiet. Looks nice. Competently replaced my old eMachine for the purposes of testing scripts and hosting a Minecraft server for a couple of friends. Aside from some difficulties with the installation, I haven't had any problems with it.

Cons: As the previous reviewer mentioned, you don't have a whole lot of room to work with. Getting the HDD into the compartment in the top of the case was a project, and getting the top back onto the thing after all of the components were in place required a lot more pressure than I was comfortable with. I personally don't hold these things against OEM, since it sort of comes with the territory with this form factor, but you should definitely be aware of them if you're thinking about buying it.

Other Thoughts: If you haven't installed laptop memory recently, as I hadn't, you may not immediately recognize how to install the RAM. Just google up a guide to installing laptop memory; the procedure is the same.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent little mini PC

Pros: Small, quiet, runs fairly cool

Cons: Tight cramped layout makes it a bit hard to work with

Other Thoughts: Bought these because I needed some machines to set up as Skype nodes for my podcasting rig, a la Leo Laporte's Skypeasaurus. They fit the bill quite nicely. They are REALLY SMALL and stack perfectly so don't take a lot of room. Runs just fine with Windows XP or Linux. Installing components (2.5" hard drive and RAM - 2 x DDR3 800/1333MHz SODIMM) was relatively painless, although putting in the hard drive took a bit of effort. To save space they put the HD mounting bracket on the underside of the top cover, and getting those tiny 2.5" hard drive screws in was nearly impossible. But overall I am still very happy. The Atom D525 is not a speed demon but my purposes was more than adequate.
