1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: At first it was nice

Cons: Then the keyboard quit working in certain sections. It didn't even last 5 months. When you try to buy parts for it you can't find them anywhere. When you talk to them directly if you can't find your receipt they won't even sell you parts. DO NOT BUY ANY ZOTAC product! Its Junk. Customer service is horrible. I have a 200$ paper weight now.

Other Thoughts: This product along with the newer version is poorly put together. Don't waste your money

4 out of 5 eggsGood, but going with a better deal.

Pros: Great construction, does not feel cheap or flimsy, but not at the cost of adding weight either. Easy to install hardware, boot/installation was a breeze.

Running Ubuntu 10.04 and EVERYTHING works as it should. I did not have to hunt down and compile code to get features to work.

I put in 2gb of RAM and it is a zippy little netbook. Has no issues handling my normal workloads, tons of websites open, local and remote documents, ect. A must if you get this unit.

Slightly larger screen than what I have seen on most other netbooks.

Cons: Battery life seems to be a bit short, but it is to be expected for a 3 cell battery.

Keyboard key placement is a little awkward. They moved the Fn key to where the left Ctrl key should be, which gets me many times a day as I use hotkeys like they are going out of style.

Fan runs a bit, but this could be an Ubuntu issue. From running Ubuntu on other laptops, it seems to be common, while running something like WinXP allows for the fan to run less. It is however quieter when compared to other netbooks.

Other Thoughts: First unit arrived DOA. Seems to be a common problem, as it was shipped in only the box it would be displayed in if in a store. Newegg shipped it correctly the second time, no issues. If you order, you may want to request they ship it in a box with packing material to be on the safe side.

While I was awaiting the return of the netbook after the first DOA, Newegg puts a Toshiba netbook on sale for less than what it cost to put this together. It has a 6 cell battery, more storage, larger keys, and larger mouse area. As of right now I am planning on keeping the Toshiba and selling this netbook.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate to Previous Review

Pros: After a month of use I wanted to provide an update. Everything still plugging along just fine. Using it at home and at school and everything is just peachy. No crashes, hiccups, burps or anything. Ubuntu boots in about 30 seconds, shuts down in about the same.

Cons: Battery Life, but people have been saying this since the beginning of the reviews.

Other Thoughts: Get the $4 screw kit available on here, the Link Depot LD-SCREWSKIT Screw Kit. It has the M3 screws you will need.

1 out of 5 eggs6 months; no rebate; update to "Usable"

Pros: See my review "Usabe" 12/9/2009

Cons: 6 months; my rebate has not arrived.
No drivers to download from Zotac product web page (they used to be there).
No BIOS update/fix for excessive fan noise problem.
There are much better deals around -- from companies that support their
products and process rebates as promised.

Other Thoughts: I searched for "rebate" in reviews for this product.
Nobody reported getting one.
It looks like Zotac is a company to stay away from.

Manufacturer Response:

Please see below for a link to the drivers for SAM 102.

For inquiries about rebates please contact our Rebate Dept. You can reach them at or by filling out a Support Ticket.

4 out of 5 eggsVery Impressed So Far

Pros: Easy to set up right out of the box. Added WD 120gb hdd and 2 gb ram. Booted and installed a linux variation and so far everything is just fine. Fast, peppy system, writing this review with it actually.

Cons: Echoing what others have said, the keyboard is a little awkward, even after typing on a laptop for years.
If you buy one of these, and I hope that someone from ZOTAC reads this, GET BETTER SCREWS FOR THE HDD. The ones that come with the system suck. WD is the most prevalent HD on the market, the least you could do is include screws that fit! If you are a customer, order some sort of flush screw set from the egg if they have it. I tried my local RS and no joy. Eventually found them at a homegrown electronics store.

Other Thoughts: This is for you guys at Newegg - I read that a lot of people get these and they are DOA, well one thing i noticed when the friendly UPS guy dropped it off was shipped in the retail carton. Not the nice pretty retail carton inside a box surrounded by styro-nuts or bubble wrap. Just the regular off the shelf carton that looked halfway beat to hell. Might have something to do with it....these aren't like my Panasonic Toughbook, I can't shove this netbook through a piece of drywall and then check my email. Better packaging might solve some of the DOA issues.

2 out of 5 eggsI wanted a DIY netbook

Pros: DIY netbook is so appealing ...

Cons: DOA. The keyboard felt cramped for the short time that I had it, and the touchpad was small, even for a netbook. I previously owned an MSI Wind u100, and so I have a frame of reference for these things.

Other Thoughts: I have to echo the sentiments of several other reviewers. I bought this kit with the hopes of building a custom netbook. I really, really wanted a custom netbook. I mean, really bad. Terribly.

Unfortunately, my model was DOA. After reading through a number of the comments from reviewers with the same issue, I've given up the ghost.

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful Netbook

Pros: To many to list. A beautiful Ubuntu notebook!!! I'm using my notebook now to write this review.

Cons: Keyboard takes a little to get use to.....I have seen worse on full size laptops. Speakers are really weak but they do work. Could use a bigger battery but its still decent. None of the items listed would require a lower rating.

Other Thoughts: I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 Beta, 2 gigs of ram, and a 250 gig hard drive. Everything works, the web cam, even the 3d graphics. Ubuntu works right out of the box. The mouse pad is small but works really good. You tube video is good.

If you want a great Ubuntu notebook this is it!!!

Now we will find out about their rebate.........

4 out of 5 eggsZotac SAM102

Pros: Price, if successful rebate and spare parts on hand. 3 USB, 2 mini PCI-E, zippy performance. Easy access for hardware installation. Fairly sturdy construction. Runs many flavors of Linux, WinXP, Win7 & Hackintosh with sound fix.

Cons: Battery life, flimsy keyboard and weak wireless card. Too many complaints on product/RMA from other buyers. Questionable rebate success. Product registration had to be completed by contacting customer service as I received the same message that product was not North American model/serial number.

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for....

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Well built, feels pretty solid. Super simple to put the memory and hard drive in. Decent speed running Ubuntu and Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Screen looks great and the batter life seems pretty good so far.

Cons: Keyboard is a little small (but this is to be expected). Also, the key layout is a little odd, i.e. the home and up arrow are right where you would expect the right shift key to be, so that takes some getting used to. Also, the left ctrl is to the right of the fn key, seems like that should be reversed.

Other Thoughts: So far, I love this little netbook. I got it to replace a 14" sony vaio that had a dying lcd (my son got it wet and it now has huge black spots on it...gonna turn it into a headless server). I was at first worried about the screen size being too small, but I haven't had an issue with that so far. Once I get used to the keyboard, this little netbook should be a joy to use!

4 out of 5 eggsJust ordered a 6-cell

Pros: Price, if MIR materializes. Good, clean mechanical design. Express card 34. 6-cell now available for $55 shipped.

Cons: 3-cell battery life. BIOS needs updating to fix Sleep anomalies. Trial launch USA only, may end up an orphan. Had to RMA first one, defective LAN port.

Other Thoughts: This is my first netbook. To see what it can do and to show off, added 2 GB, 320 GB 7200 RPM, dual boot W7 Ultimate with Office 2010 Pro Plus and XP Pro with Office 2007 Pro Enterprise; works fine other than Atom-slow. Added Synaptics driver.
