5 out of 5 eggsGreat product, excellent support

This review is from: Black ECS LIVA 32GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 32GB eMMC Storage

Pros: Had some issues with the HDMI on device and contacted ECS support.

ECS were very prompt, professional and helpful, they got me up and running very quickly and I could not be happier with this device. Running Ubuntu + Kodi.

Seeing ECS tech support in action gives me great confidence in puchasing an ECS Product in future.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty sweet..

This review is from: Black ECS LIVA 32GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 32GB eMMC Storage

Pros: It's a computer and it fits in your hand! It runs full-fledged Windows! Boots in about 20 seconds. Fanless & silent. Runs Kodi (xbmc) terrifically.

Cons: Does not run on a standard cell phone charger as this comes with a 3A one (though it may work on a 2A one too..?) Ram/disk/cpu are not replaceable. Only 2 USB ports, accessing BIOS/Boot Menu seems to only work on *some* keyboards, 32-bit Windows won't boot which seemed like an obvious choice to me to save on the little 2GB of RAM.. DOS/Hiren's, etc. won't boot... Pretty much nothing 32-bit seems to boot. And the biggest annoyance.. perhaps this is a result of loading Windows 10 Technical Preview and not Windows 8.1? But CPU performance is really lousy.. most noticeable when browsing & rendering web pages (tried Firefox and Chrome) to the point that the machine is pretty much frozen for a few seconds while the page is loading.. and if you click on something before the page is fully rendered it actually ends up clicking elsewhere... Windows itself is pretty snappy though, which I guess is more of a compliment of Windows.... Although, do a few things and again you at odds with the CPU. In conclusion... I love this thing! But it's not replacing my desktop (or laptop) any time soon. For a home theater though, this may be just what you need. Last but not least, it is a wonderful toy.

Bonus Tip: I've read that it performs a lot faster (even renders pages quicker) on Ubuntu.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Black ECS LIVA 32GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 32GB eMMC Storage

Pros: Fast for my HTPC with Linux Mint

Cons: linux drivers for bluetooth not available yet and wi-fi is somewhat of a pain to get working.

Other Thoughts: I use this as my HTPC in my living room. XBMC works very well and so does streaming Big Screen Steam games from my gaming rig in my home office to the living room! This little thing works great!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HTPC

This review is from: Black ECS LIVA 32GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 32GB eMMC Storage

Pros: Perfect device for an HTPC; Low power consumption; Quiet; Decodes HD content; Plenty fast running Mythbuntu 12.

Cons: Needs one more USB port; Hard to assemble wireless antennae; UEFI interface is somewhat annoying and limiting; Hard to open case after assembly; USB port for power cable seems a little weak

Other Thoughts: I am using two of these as MythTV frontends. Hard to beat the Christmas sale price of $110. Installed Ubuntu 12.2 to work with my 0.26.1 backend. Initially the HDMI audio did not work, but an upgrade of the Linux kernel to 3.16 fixed that. Connected to LAN via Ethernet cable. Have not tried WiFi or BT. Picked up a small 4-port USB hub for around $10 to augment the 2 USB ports. At just over $100, this thing is hands-down the best HTPC option I've ever seen.

3 out of 5 eggsGood potential but build quality is poor - HDMI not working

This review is from: Black ECS LIVA 32GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 32GB eMMC Storage

Pros: Compact & silent - very nicely done.

Cons: HDMI port does not work (Linux or Windows 8.1).
UEFI only Bios makes life difficult

Other Thoughts: Adding a USB header on the board for additional ports or an internal facing USB for a flash drive would be nice.
For HTPC:
A little more though with the case would have made room for a hard drive.
Adding IR or a header would make sense.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Xubuntu 14.04 x64

This review is from: Black ECS LIVA 32GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 32GB eMMC Storage

Pros: Small size
Low power
Runs Linux (must install using EFI formatted USB, I used Xubuntu 14.04).
Got WiFi working (though not bluetooth)
Reasonably fast program access.

Cons: None for what it is.

Other Thoughts: I got this on sale and it was a bargain.
With the sale over, I would probably move towards a Kabini APU system for ~$50 more.
Plays flash content better through chromium (with pepperflash) than Firefox.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Dangleboard

This review is from: Black ECS LIVA 32GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 32GB eMMC Storage

Pros: - x86_64 with small size (dangleboard)
- low power consumption (550mA @ 5V)
- dualie CPU/RAM to run GUI and bloatware browsers (load 1000 mA @ 5V)
- fast disk (read eMMC 130, USB3 69 MB/s)
- acceptable headphone sound
- microUSB power supply easily replaceable. Mostly used Apple 12W for testing.

Cons: - UEFI BIOS with no working legacy mode
- wireless & BT antennae tricky connectors (did not test) & dubious drivers
- boxy, oversized case (I hang bare, would post photo but webmeisters too lazy to vet)
- peaks too much power for pass-thru USB battery banks
- regular price too high per component costs.

Other Thoughts: - Great board. Installed Lubuntu 14.10 with _zero_ glitches. Scary experience :)
- Some USB kbd disconnects, cured with 4 wraps through a snap choke.
- Would have preferred a [micro]SD slot to preload and shuffle OSes, but speed of the eMMC more than compensates.
- I like my Raspberry A+ at 200mA which is fine with textmode sshd but this bd has more than enough power to run the sadly necessary GUI browsers.
- Feels like 2 * 2GHz i5 desktop. More responsive than my work comp.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Value

This review is from: Black ECS LIVA 32GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 32GB eMMC Storage

Pros: Great little unit, especially if you like to tinker. Silent operation, low power consumption, low heat, and no moving parts makes this little PC ideal for use as a Media Server or Security Camera Control Center.

Cons: Case is very difficult to get apart once assembled. I dislodged one side of the tiny surface mounted power LED while taking it apart. Luckily I was able to re-solder it.

Other Thoughts: The first unit I ordered failed to power up. Very annoying to have to pay for return shipping on a defective item. I would like to see Newegg adopt a return policy similar other vendors whereby return shipping is free for defective merchandise.

I used a emery board to take the sharp edges off the plastic tabs that hold the case together. It is now much easier to take the case apart.

I used a magnifier and plenty of light to install the WiFi connectors. Make sure that the connector is centered and level before applying pressure.

I loaded Ubuntu 14.04 and was able to get the WiFi to work using Samiux's Blog. I would like to try Windows 8.1 but a license would cost as much or more as the hardware.

Had trouble with HDMI sound and had to reload the ALSA and Pulse Audio packages.

Overall, a good value. My goal is to get more familiar with Ubuntu and eventually replace my old Windows based Security Camera Server.

3 out of 5 eggsantenna connectors suck

This review is from: Black ECS LIVA 32GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 32GB eMMC Storage

Pros: Updated review. Raised the rating one star because audio does work over HDMI with a different cable.

Cons: See my other review about the antenna connectors being impossible to install.

Other Thoughts: It's weird that audio wouldn't work with a known good HDMI cable. Using the exact same input port on the TV, audio works on the first cable I tried with a Shuttle Mini PC, a DirectTV receiver, and a Blue Ray player. Just not with this product. For what ever reason, swapping the cable fixed the audio issue.

2 out of 5 eggsantenna connectors suck

This review is from: Black ECS LIVA 32GB 2GB DDR3L RAM installed 32GB eMMC Storage

Pros: Small, quite, low power, runs open office and chrome. Works better for couch surfing than my Samsung Smart TV's web browser and supports my network printer driver.

Cons: No sound through HDMI cable.

As other reviewers have mentioned the antenna connections for Bluetooth and WIFI are horrible to install. I have been building PCs for over 20 years. I regularly replace SOIC, BGA, and QTFP surface mount ICs with hand solder and hand hot air tools. After an hour of trying, both connectors were broken.

Other Thoughts: I don't need WIFI or Bluetooth for my application and I read the other reviews saying how impossible they can be. So it isn't a deal breaker for me.

While that was disappointing, not having sound over the HDMI cable was a real bummer. I kind of expected that as a given. There is a analog jack for sound but it would be SO much better if there was sound over the HDMI cable.

If the antenna connector design was better this would have a 4 star and if sound worked over HDMI, then a 5 star.
