5 out of 5 eggs100% for a week now always on

This review is from: ECS LIVA 2GB DDR3L RAM installed Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: The little box boots up extremely fast. I've been running the unit full time 24/7 for the last week, and I've no issues with it. For basic web surfing, it's great and quick. I wouldn't load a bunch of applications on it. I use it as a PRTG probe, and it's more than enough to accomplish that task.

Cons: It has a cheap housing, like a snap together model but without any glue. Some people complain about the wireless antennas. I don't use the wireless and didn't install it, I use the direct ethernet plug.

Other Thoughts: Surf the web, or maybe even use it as a media server. Don't think you will be loading Photoshop on this little ankle biter.

3 out of 5 eggsWiFi+Bluetooth Problem

This review is from: ECS LIVA 2GB DDR3L RAM installed Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: Love the small form concept.

Cons: - WiFi+Bluetooth is not working. It should work out of the box with Windows 8.1.
- Could use a 3rd usb port.

Other Thoughts: Seems like my wifi+bluetooth issues are hardware related. Started a case with ECS support. WiFi needed for my purpose, so this is pretty much a brick for me until the problem is resolved.

5 out of 5 eggsAlmost perfect tiny PC

This review is from: ECS LIVA 2GB DDR3L RAM installed Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: - Tiny (yeah, really tiny)
- Ultra low power use (4W)
- Runs faster than my older laptop
- Installing Windows 8.1 was easy
- All drivers available from ECS website

Cons: - Could really use another USB port
- 64 Gb of internal storage would have been even nicer
- The little antenna wires were hard to snap on

Other Thoughts: I fell in love with my new toy! This is a great solution for an "always on" little PC/server since it only uses 4W. Installing Windows 8.1 was a snap, all updated drivers are on the ECS site, and it has plenty of punch. It is now running my VPN, Plex media server, printer and all file sharing. I had it in my coat closet with all the other misc computer equipment, but I think that I will throw it on the back of my TV and connect it with the HDMI port - buy a little bluetooth keyboard, and I am styling even more!

4 out of 5 eggsVery small indeed

This review is from: ECS LIVA 2GB DDR3L RAM installed Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: Very small
Well built
Has all the I/O most people need
Drivers for Win 8 all installed w/o issue
Performance is not that bad

Cons: None at this point

Other Thoughts: Had much difficulty connecting the two leads for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas and ended up soldering them to the small receiver board. I would recommend attaching them to the board ahead of time and under a magnifying glass. BTW, the soldered connections seem to be working fine.

3 out of 5 eggsvery limited usefulness

This review is from: ECS LIVA 2GB DDR3L RAM installed Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: very small footprint, doesn't use a lot of power. If ECS will release an updated bios that allows other OS to be installed this might run great with windows 7 embedded for a smart thin client PC.

Cons: limiting the system by only making it capable of running windows 8.x or specific versions of linux wind up hurting this capable little box. Needs to have a minimum of a 64GB MMC to be able to hold a standard windows 8.x install without being very cramped for room. Unit bogs down easy when running windows 8.1 update 1 as installed OS, I tried removing all "metro" apps, tweaking swap file usage, etc. nothing helped.

Other Thoughts: I had hoped that this would be capable enough to allow me to run Kodi (XBMC) but performance was terrible, it was faster for me to run the TVBMC app on an old samsung galaxy nexus than the xbmc app on top of windows 8.1
I may try it again later on with the openelec linux distro but will probably resell it, thankfully I got it while it was on sale for $123 so I can at least break even on it.

5 out of 5 eggsBest HTPC

This review is from: ECS LIVA 2GB DDR3L RAM installed Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: +Tiny (smaller than my headphone amp!)
+Extremely low power consumption (TV USB will do!)
+Absolutely silent
+Decoding 4k without breaking a sweat
+Steam streaming at 4k without breaking a sweat
+Plenty of power to do any basic tasks
+No need to purchase ssd seperately
+No need to purchase wifi/bluetooth adapter seperately
+Sleek yet understated design
+USB 3 onboard (but only one)
+Windows 8 support
+Ubuntu support
+Super easy assembly
+Amazing price!

Cons: -Have to pair bluetooth devices again on each start up (most likely software issue, not hardware)
-Cheap construction (but what can you honestly expect as such price)
-Lacking connectivity with only one USB3, one USB2, ethernet and HDMI

Other Thoughts: I'm honestly amazed at how well it performs and how much you can actually do with it. This is perfect HTPC or office PC. It is the cheapest option for HTPC for such hardware. Easy to set up and no need to purchase ram, storage, wifi etc. Everything you need is already included.

I got 128gb USB 3 for extra storage, Diamond XSTU21 for superior sound and thats all I would ever need to make LIVA perfect.

If you have a need for a basic PC to perform basic tasks of all kinds, this is the one.

2 out of 5 eggsDied, purchased 64GB instead

This review is from: ECS LIVA 2GB DDR3L RAM installed Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: - Silent
- No moving parts (well, the power button moves, but that's it!)
- Super small
- Runs Windows 8 respectably
- Looks cool

Cons: - Died after a few hours. I couldn't get it to POST. No video display, no power to USB. Just.. nothing except the power LED
- 32GB is really tiny. I had to go through quite a bit to do the Windows "Upgrade Trick" since there's not enough room for 2 Win8 installations.
- Unbelievably hard to install wireless antennas. Next time I will install them on the wireless card first and then plug that card into the board.
- Impossibly (that's more than unbelievably) hard to get the case back apart if you, for example, have to send it back for RMA in original packaging.
- Only two USB ports, no PS/2. I had to use a wireless combo keyboard/mouse to also use an external DVD or flash drive.
- Absolutely could not get the UEFI/BIOS configured to boot off of an external DVD drive, even though the drive was spinning. Had to install Win8 off of a 16GB flash drive. I probably spent an hour with various configurations and finally gave up.
- Had a hard time getting UEFI options to "stick." Maybe that was a precursor to the device's death?

Other Thoughts: I liked the concept enough that I'm ordering another one, but I ordered the 64GB "White" edition so I'd have a little more space to work with. I pray that the new one works better. I don't want to have to go through the assembly process a third time. Just not worth it.

4 out of 5 eggsInstructions don't mention..

This review is from: ECS LIVA 2GB DDR3L RAM installed Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: Works! Great for HTPC, Steam streaming, etc.

Cons: First one arrived DOA. Instructions say you can install from USB -- they don't mention that depending on the flash drive the device may or may not receive enough power to boot from. I ended up installing from an external DVD drive no problem.

Other Thoughts: I wish there were more USB ports, but whatever..

3 out of 5 eggsSeriously bad website for ECS

This review is from: ECS LIVA 2GB DDR3L RAM installed Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: Windows 10 installed & works (some driver issues.)

Ubuntu 14.14 installs & works well.

Cons: The ECS website is godawful.

*All* downloads from the LIVA drivers page on ecs.com.tw fail with partial downloads.

The problem form submission page doesn't work with Chrome (can't fill out required fields.)

The support email rejects me with a spam filter ( tpe-spam-01.ecs.com.tw)

This is close to the worst support I've ever seen. It's like they really, really don't want to get feedback or requests from customers.

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for the website issues.

The Liva micro site issues have been resolved and all downloads should be working.

Please contact us, if you have any further questions or concerns.

I or any of my team members here at technical support will be able to help you.
Our hours are Mon-Fri 9am-6pm PST.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate from previous review in August

This review is from: ECS LIVA 2GB DDR3L RAM installed Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System

Pros: This is an update review on this little guy... I previously only gave it 2 Eggs due to it's inability to successfully get Ubuntu Live running on it. I finally got Live running on it sans the wireless card since the driver wouldn't install properly... Never could get ANY video sources, DVD nor Online to work but after configuring another system with the same version of Ubuntu and experiencing the same issues I decided that the Liva box wasn't the problem, but either Ubuntu's or my lack of experience with Linux. I acquired a copy of Win8.1 and now the little black box is what it should be. It plays anything my wife throws at it and it's quite adept at 1080p video without any hiccups nor blurring.

Cons: It could use more memory, but I can see they're addressing that with another unit. The only thing I could have asked for more of would have been more USB ports, or the ability to add more memory after the fact.

Other Thoughts: Hats off to the ECS tech support who I dinged in my previous review... the contacted me before the review was published and I was unable to retract the statement. With some of their suggestions I tried several things before finally giving up on Ubuntu and relenting to Microsoft. All is well now.
