5 out of 5 eggs5 Eggs Are Not Enough!

This review is from: LIVA X 4GB/64GB Mini PC

Pros: It works really well. W8.1 installed easily. Driver DVD installed all of the drivers. Upgrade to W10 went smoothly. Downloaded W10 drivers installed without a hitch.

Cons: Documentation doesn't tell you how to install mSata drive. (Take the 4 screws out of the bottom. Remove the VGA connector screws and the motherboard will drop out)

Other Thoughts: I bought this for $149 with a $35 rebate, $114. What an awesome deal!. It will be my HTPC.

Running it uses 8-10 watts. Off, 3 watts. Wake on LAN works.

It's on my Windows domain.

Wake-on LAN doesn't work when using HDMI.

Rebate processor really SUCKS! Ten weeks later.... still nothing.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the money

This review is from: LIVA X 4GB/64GB Mini PC

Pros: SMALL
Silent
USB 3.0 support
HDMI & VGA simultaneous support
Easy enough to download drivers and install upgrades.

Cons: Limited expansion
Extra $95 mSata drive required for Windows 7
Internal 64GB is unavailable in Windows 7 (so far as I've seen)

Other Thoughts: I am able to stream with it from both online and across the local LAN without any real hiccups or issues. It did have some hiccuping, but I believe it was network related. Kids can do their homework right in the den! I am having issues getting 5.1 surround to translate anything but stereo, it is working from the other HDMI feeds to my AV stack.

May buy for mom and a couple others that need a very simplistic PC.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Value, not trouble free setup ...

This review is from: LIVA X 4GB/64GB Mini PC

Pros: - fast for the price
- no fan , very low power.

Cons: -Will not boot from internal mmc flash in Linux. (tried for 3 days ...)
-Needs a small SSD to boot, then the internal mmc flash can be used as storage.
- no 4k UHD tv support. (1080p max)

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend this product for a MythTV frontend , or a decentlow end PC. The OS loading is very straight forward with any kind of SSD installed in the internal slot, or using and external HD on the USB3 connector. I could not get it to boot on the internal mmc flash.

5 out of 5 eggsThis one was, Tricky to install win 8

This review is from: LIVA X 4GB/64GB Mini PC

Pros: finally had to use the ms-dos option, in repair tools of the win8 installer to format the eMCC SSD. The install went fine after that. Windows couldn't find the "Install media" before the format. OH! AND USE RUFUS TO MAKE THE BOOTABLE USB! under the partition scheme and target system type...CHOOSE THE GPT partition scheme for UEFI!

Cons: ALMOST RMA'ed thinking the eMCC was dead!

Other Thoughts: try at least 10 times to install. DON'T GIVE UP!

5 out of 5 eggsThis one's a a keeper!

This review is from: LIVA X 4GB/64GB Mini PC

Pros: It came up the first time, installed Windows 10 Pro 64-bit from an external USB DVD drive without any problems or extra drivers. The wireless module/antennae were already installed, so I didn't end up breaking the tiny antenna connectors this time :-). It's nice that Windows 10 disables WiFi when you have a wired network connection.

Cons: Runs a little warm compared to the less expensive "some assembly required" one with half as much memory and disk space.

Other Thoughts: I wish it had a four-core processor. I wish it could accept an external SD card. I wish it were free! ;-)

4 out of 5 eggsWorks fine but documentation could be better

This review is from: LIVA X 4GB/64GB Mini PC

Pros: Small, runs cool, supports 8.1 windows. perfect for media server and video surveillance server. Splashtop runs fine giving remote access, DVDFab media player can play any of my Blue-Ray ISO images and Blue-Iris handles my video cameras perfectly. The box can easily be hidden and cloud storage can be used for motion detect images in the event it is stolen.

Cons: There is a problem with the HDMI hardware, possibly the problem is the win8.1 drivers. Problem 1: I was unable to get the LIVA to work thru an HDMI powered switched. Problem 2: It also likes expensive HDMI cables. I had a 3 meter run from the electronics area to the LG 60" TV. There were 3 cables to choose from all went to wall connectors and from wall connector to TV. The LIVA only worked with the more expensive cable. It did not work with the thinner cheaper cable. Problem 3: The win8.1 drivers can detect up to 4 monitors when there are actually none connected. It is not possible to remove the "extra" monitors and the Intel HD graphics driver has to be un-installed and re-installed before the LIVA will recognize an actual monitor when connected. This can be easily verified by (1) disconnecting the actual monitor and (2) using any remote access program to log into the LIVA and then ask the windows 8.1 display handler to detect a monitor. This problem can easily occur if you are using remote access and happen to disconnect the HDMI by powering off the TV set.

The BIOS did not show the 64gb ram I had purchased and I almost sent it back thinking I had received the cheaper LIVA.

Other Thoughts: The HDMI switch was cheap, but it was a "powered" switch and worked perfectly with Dish Network receiver, PIVOS AIOS HD, LG Blue-Ray, but it would NOT work with the LIVA in any resolution, not just the default of 1080p.

I tried installing win7 using a UEFI build technique but it didnt work so I then put in an old copy of win8 I had bought for $14 when it first came out and upgraded it to 8.1. I used a USB Blue-Ray device to install from the win8 dvd. Hopefully the upgrade to win10 will work on this system as I like it. It would get 5 stars except for not working with the HDMI switch.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little box.

This review is from: LIVA X 4GB/64GB Mini PC

Pros: Passively cooled
Small
No moving parts
Energy Efficient
CHEAP
This isn't your grandpa's ATOM cpu. It is plenty fast enough for most everyday tasks and light to moderate office work. Don't expect to be editing gigs of video or running high end Photoshop filters.
1080p Netflix with ease. The Netflix App for Windows 8+ gives the best user experience on these LIVAs. I did run Netflix 1080p video in Firefox, Chrome and IE11 with only the occasional dropped frame.
Runs Windows 10 Technical Preview perfectly with included Windows 8.1 drivers.

Cons: eMMC storage doesn't work at in Windows 7.
All USB ports are on the front, only 3 total.
Installing an mSATA drive requires removing the mother board from the chassis.
Nitpicks:
Has ventilation holes for dust to sneak into.
No 4GB ram with 32GB eMMC or no eMMC versions for those that need Windows 7.

Other Thoughts: I bought the original LIVA to test it out when it came out. I found it had several weaknesses that this model addresses. A UEFI firmware without BIOS emulation prevented the original from booting Windows 7 and most Linux distros. On top of that several other distros would not work with the eMMC storage. This model has the appropriate emulation features and the optional mSATA fixes the storage issue. The original had only one USB 2.0 and One USB 3.0 port. A hub was a must. The extra USB 2.0 port allows for a keyboard and mouse and leaves an open USB 3.0 port for other devices. I would prefer at least two USB in the rear and two in the front but I can live with 3 total. The original LIVA used SDIO for it's wifi card. Not every OS plays nice with SDIO and it severely limits the ability to use a different wifi card. This model use mPCIE so I can easily swap in a different wifi card if needed. One last thing this unit is slightly heavier than the original which is a bonus. The original was so light just having an HDMI cable plugged in could tip it over.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than expected

This review is from: LIVA X 4GB/64GB Mini PC

Pros: Installed windows 8.1 no problem!

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Whoever says there are issues is doing something wrong.

I put W8.1 on a USB3 stick, plug it in, turn it on & done...

1 out of 5 eggsNot so fast...

This review is from: LIVA X 4GB/64GB Mini PC

Pros: Small size. (I could get a smaller brick though and functionality would be the same. Plus it would be a lot less frustrating because I wouldn't expect it to do anything but sit there.)

Cons: - Won't run windows 7 without msata (Read the fine print.)
- Got windows 8.1 and it wouldn't load that because of a driver issue (Driver was not on the supplied DVD)
- I got more complete instructions with my last toothbrush
- Tech support is via web form only

Other Thoughts: It looks great and the specs are exciting. If you are an early adopter and you don't mind helping them get from 1.0 to a working version, this could be the computer for you. If you need other than a cool looking paper weight, get the afore mentioned brick and buy a different computer. At least until they get a working prototype.

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry to hear about the issues you have had.

Windows 7 is supported via mSATA SSD. This information is listed on Newegg in the features and overview sections.
Microsoft unfortunately does not have support for Windows 7 to install onto the eMMC storage.

Windows 8.1 will install without issue or the need of drivers during installation. All drivers required for Windows 8.1 installation are included with the OS. Please contact us as we would like to look into this driver issue.

Tech support can also be reached by phone or email, see the contacts below for reference.
