The power of a nüvi GPS from Garmin doesn't have to break the bank. The nüvi 200 has all the features you need to get where you're going without a bunch of extra features to complicate the process. It comes pre-loaded with maps for the Continental US, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Just enter a destination on the 3.5" touch screen and you're on your way. With maps shown in 2D or 3D and turn-by-turn directions you don't have to worry about getting lost. Add custom points of interest like school zones and traffic cameras, then set warnings to let you know they're coming up.
You can upgrade through the USB port or SD cards. Garmin Travel Guides give you detailed information on your destination. With a GPS from Garmin, getting lost isn't an option.

Excellent entry-level GPS
- Pros: Tiny. Though the skimpy manual does not mention USB, I was able to utilize a mini-USB cable that I had on-hand to charge the device initially though it is not operable when connected to the USB port. For the screen size, the interface is fairly usable, even in the car. The display is readable and not overly fancy. If you are looking for a low-end GPS you cannot go wrong here, it has all the must-have features for GPS navigation, if you can live without some of the bells and whistles.
- Cons: Tiny. No AC power adapter ($25) or USB cable ($15) are included. Little to no mention of USB is made, even though it's the only way you can update the firmware from the web (and also a convenient way to charge it if you're not near a car). Occasionally when entering the name of something it will switch to a pick list as I'm ready to press another letter. That said, the interface is still very responsive for an embedded device. Without the ability to speak street names, the voice gets a bit monotonous ('In point three miles, turn left, then keep left' - with her urgent stress on the numbers and directions).
- Other Thoughts: Search Youtube for videos of the Nuvi 200 series as well as the Mios and other. In some cases you can see side-by-side operation. This played a large role in my decision here. You can find more advanced features (such as speaking street names) on the cheaper models from Mio, but the interface looked very cramped, almost like you'd need to use a stylus (in the car?). Also, I bought this for my fiancé (not tech savvy), and she was able to operate the interface almost immediately with minimal prompting from me. The interface is consistent and the average person should take no more than 20 minutes to be comfortable with it. Uses the same mini-USB cable as Motorola phones.
Perfect value vs. features
- Pros: Simple interface, outstanding feature set for the price, clear voice, easy to update via internet with USB, has got me out of a few tricky situations!
- Cons: I have found it hard to mount in the perfect permanent spot, so I have it on the windshield with the included accessories.
- Other Thoughts: Portable GPS' are thieves latest must-have. Don't leave it in your car/truck - take it with you wherever you go.

- Pros: Very easy to setup. Excellent product.
- Cons: None
Love, Love, Love it
- Pros: Easy to use - has my favorite user interface/screen layout, I like how it posts estimated arrival time based on your speed and will make adjustments, long lasting battery, screen easy to see even in bright light, great price, portability.
- Cons: Sometimes slow in finding the satellite, but solve this by turning it on before fastening seatbelt, starting car, etc. Sometimes I wish the screen were a little larger. Only occasionally have run into the problem of not being able to locate newer streets.
- Other Thoughts: I have used the USB cable from my digital camera to connect the device to my computer, which has worked fine both for charging the unit and for downloading updates to the software should you so desire.
Love this thing
- Pros: It's easy to use. It's cheap. The interface is simple and uncluttered. You can search for POIs while navigating, and the "via" feature is great. When you select a destination and you are already in navigation mode, you get the option of "set as new destination" or "set as via". If you select the latter, your route changes to go through the via point and then on to the original destination. This is great for when you're on the road and you're looking for a lunch stop, or considering a detour to some attraction. You can update this as often as you like throughout the day. The processor is fast. The screen colors are easy-to-read. Also love the web site integration.
- Cons: It doesn't have every whiz-bang feature, but at this price what would you expect. This is bare-bones, very easy-to-use and functional.
- Other Thoughts: I broke the screen on my nuvi 200 halfway through a 2-week road trip. I went to a big-box store in a small town and bought what they had, which was a different brand. What a mistake! The other brand was much harder to use and slower. I've already sold it and I'm planning to get the nuvi 200 repaired, if that's cheaper than buying a new one.
