The pocket-sized Garmin nüvi 255W gives you turn-by-turn voice directions with spoken street names and a touch-sensitive, full-color widescreen, so it’s easy to stay on course! The nüvi mounts quickly with the included suction cup mount and adhesive dash disk, and pops off with a gentle tug, so you can take it with you. The Li-ion battery lets you use nüvi to navigate on foot for up to 4 hours between charges, so you can let it lead the charge when you’re making sales calls, or out for a day of shopping conquest.
The unit ships with preloaded regional maps, and includes a huge database of Points of Interest (POI), like gas stations, restaurants, attractions and parks, and shopping. You can also use the Garmin Poi Loader software (free download) to install custom POI like traffic camera locations and school zones, and then set proximity alerts to warn you when you’re approaching one.
This Garmin also supports an FM traffic receiver (receiver and subscription sold separately) to help you avoid sitting in traffic jams. The Garmin nüvi 255W is a slick entry into the auto GPS market with the great price!
Pros: Garmin website was easy to register and do automatic software updates. It gets GPS signals in no more than 30 seconds. It makes fast adjustments if you take a different route than the original directions it gives you.
Cons: It only came with a Quick Start Manual. I had to log on to Garmin.com to get a pdf file of the complete manual. No USB connector cord. I was able to use the ones from my digital camera or mp3 player.
Other Thoughts: This was my first car GPS and it was very simple to figure out. The female voice sounds clear and is easy to understand. I like that it calls out the streets by name and gives you advanced warning that your next turn is coming up. I am glad I didn't pay $1600 for the factory installed GPS that could have come with my vehicle. I got this for less than $300 and can use it any vehicle.

Garmin ... garbage
Reviewed By: on 8/16/2009
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: I can't think of any...really.
Cons: Ridiculous routes, incorrect routes and sometimes literally just going in circles. Maps are NOT accurate, despite what I've read in other reviews. Slow to reposition vehicle after turns, often so slow that you find yourself in the wrong lane if your in a series of quick turns.
Other Thoughts: I used a TomTom One in europe for four years without a single issue. Coming back I needed a new GPS and read some reviews indicating as Garmin is an american company versus TomTom which is european...Garmin's maps of the US are much more accurate. I fell for it and it wasn't long before I regretted it. After almost getting killed in a major merge because it took so long to clarify the route...I'd had it. Back to TomTom and I have no regrets or incorrect routes or near misses. I'd strongly encourage any potential GPS buyer to steer clear of the Garmin.

Pros: The widescreen packs a lot of area into it, the Text-To-Speech feature is nice and loud enough for me, shows the kind of turn you'd have to take with the turn indicator at the top-left
Cons: No 'Volume' knob/slider on the side, can be slow to recalculate at times,
