PHAROS PB010 USB GPS Receiver

Get more from Microsoft Streets & Trips and Microsoft AutoRoute. With the Pharos PB010 iGPS-500 GPS receiver you can turn your Windows laptop into a portable GPS navigation system. The unit uses a powerful SiRFstarIII chipset that is capable of receiving a signal better than previous models, especially important when you're under heavy cloud cover or are blocked by obstacles.

The receiver is incredibly small, measuring only 1.42x1.34x0.47 inches. Made to work with third-party software like Microsoft Streets & Trips, the device connects to your notebook via the included USB cable that allows you to place it up on your dashboard in clear direct sight of the sky. Or you can use the bundled dongle for connecting directly to a USB port. There are also optional adapters for connecting the device by PC Card slot, Compact Flash slot and Bluetooth. Also, all of the power needed for the receiver is pulled from your notebook, so there’s no need to recharge the iGPS-500 ever.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Vista x64 Support

Pros: It is easily recognized by Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008, just as expected. First tried using it on my laptop indoors, but no signal. Walked outside the door, and it connected instantly. The device is accurate enough to pick up my basic movements of walking around my yard!

Cons: The GPS device itself as a Serial based device and comes with a Series to USB converter. The Serial-USB adpater has absolutely NO driver support under Windows Vista x64. Tried countless drives for several similar products, but still no-go. Using VM-Ware, I forwarded the USB device to my Windows XP Professional 32bit virtual machine, and it works perfectly from within there.

Other Thoughts: I didnt have any issues with the connectors being flimsy at all, like other reviewers have mentioned. Also, the device has an embedded BLUE LED inside of it, for people such as myself who like to have all their colored lights match.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed

Pros: Small Receiver. Easy to set up on XP with Microsoft Streets & Trips

Cons: USB Cable not really long enough to run through dash and hide.

Other Thoughts: FAST!!!! SHIPPING From Newegg!! I needed the item the next day so I paid for next day shipping. Newegg shipped it the same day as I ordered and it was here UPS before 10am.

5 out of 5 eggsSmall, Fast, Amazing

Pros: very fast sat acquisition. takes only a few seconds to power-up and show location. design allows for many uses with optional accessories. sd-card or CF adapter for PDA, bluetooth, even rs232 for older laptops.

Cons: suction cup is on cable rather than on the unit itself, so the unit flops around while driving.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The device does exactly what you can expect it to do. I have it working with MS Streets and Maps 2007, And its perfect.

Cons: The cord that came with it was a little short, so you may need to buy an extension if you plan to permantly place it somewhere on your car, instead of just throwing it up on the dashboard.

Other Thoughts: This thing is litterally the size of a quarter, and can probably easily get lost if you disconnect it from the USB cable. Unlink others, i have not had any problems with the connections being loose, I just put it on my rear window dashboard area and will probably never touch the physical device again, just the end of the USB. It takes my computer about 20 seconds to locate out position. If you are standing still when you calibrate your device, it will not find you. Circle the parking lot or something.

2 out of 5 eggsFragile Connection

Pros: Compact and low cost

Cons: Flimsy plastic USB connector (x12-42936) wiggles too much and stressed the connections. The device cuts out at the slightest movement and makes it quite annoying to use. I will have to re-solder the connections inside the connector to correct it or shell out for the bluetooth adapter.

Other Thoughts: Go with the Bluetooth version and avoid the weak connector.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Locks on to satellites fast (<1 min), provides good accuracy. I always show as being directly on streets in Microsoft Streets and Trips. Works great.

Cons: Bluetooth would be nice.

Other Thoughts: Used in both Microsoft Streets and Trips and Roadnav... worked like a charm.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Just so people know, this is the same manufacture of the MS S & T GPS receiver.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Some one mentioned 'off route', that is a software issue not this receiver
