Not Bad for Bottom End GPS!
- Pros: I haven't actually purchased this GPS system but had the use of my in-laws for a long trip just recently. As it turned out, the GPS performed almost flawlessly. Its strengths are that it has an easy user interface (touch screen), it re-routes if you vary from your defined directions, it is one of the least expensive units available, and the route calculations for distance and time of arrival were almost dead on. Nice features included finding restaurants by name near your current location, stores for basic needs, and gas stations in out of the way places - anywhere along your route.
- Cons: There were times when the re-route feature would try to get you back on route in a most indirect manner. Occasionally, it would attempt to take you around in a circle if you deviated from your route instead of properly re-routing you using closer streets. Although I had updated the software with the "latest" maps, my street and address didn't actually show up. Prepare yourself for some down time if you want to update the software because I used a high-speed internet connection and the download took almost 40 minutes followed by a 30 minute transfer from PC to GPS (Reloads the entire map with Points-of-Interest).
- Other Thoughts: For a low budget unit, this guy wasn't bad. Magellan makes a pretty good product based on my 2 week trial of my borrowed unit. I am now considering a higher end model since this one didn't announce street names, just turns and their distance.
Great Entry model
- Pros: This is not the best GPS on the market. But it is one of the best in its price range. Don't be mislead by other reviews of other models that compare items well out of their price range. For the price this model A) works B) is easy to use C) is bright and loud.
- Cons: Not easily upgradeable, no real time updates of new information like some MORE expensive models. Does not work outside of the lower 48.
- Other Thoughts: My wife hated it when I bought it. Now I have to buy another one since she won't give it back.

A Good Starter GPS System
- Pros: I got one of these from Newegg as "Refurbished", it came packed well with all promised accessories. I had previously returned a "Failed" GPS made by NIKO. The Magellan Roadmate 1200 acquires GPS Satellites quickly and is very user friendly. It worked right out of the box and the window mount worked fine along with the Car GPS Power receptacle. It has "Voice" guideance and nice clear Bright Video Presentation. I got it for $69 Plus a $20 rebate= $49.00 from Newegg, so I'm using it to learn GPS Navigating. I would recommend it if you can get one "Refurbed", in that it's less than 1/2 the new product purchase. I'm looking forward to using it on a future trip to Baltimore, MD. It works great on local trips, I am totally pleased with this purchase so far.
- Cons: I gave the product 4 eggs only because there are no firmware updates available at Magellan, for this product. All I can figure to this point is that the Maps may be 2007, only because I saw 2007 written on the Magellan Roadmate 1200 Reference Card. I personally don't know specifically what year the SD Chip they send you with this unit (MAP & POI Data) was incorporated.
- Other Thoughts: If you are a serious GPS Navigation System User who takes many many trips around the USA and Various other countries, you will need to upgrade to a more expensive GPS System whose Manufacturer provides lastest firmware updates. I use the GPS for short trips in Florida and occasional trips out of State, and this GPS works fine for me.
great deal
- Pros: Plugged it in and it was ready to go; virtually no set-up time. The window mount works nicely. I like how the background turns black at night. It just navigated a 9-hour trip home from a city I had never been to flawlessly. Though it was a gift, its low cost had to be nice for the giver.
- Cons: It did briefly freeze once while I was toying around with it. I turned it off and on again and it came back just fine. I would have liked for it to have had an AC adapter for use outside the car.
- Other Thoughts: If what you need is a device to help you navigate roads and streets which you are not familiar with, this is the thing. Ease of use, low cost and overall effectiveness make this GPS a great choice.
Good for the Price
- Pros: For the price, its a good gps. I really didn't need one, but I decided to get something basic. Theres a lot of roads where I live and I drive a lot, so this helps.
- Cons: It has froze on me a few times, even if I don't change my route. If I don't follow the gps directions, it takes a number of seconds to recalculate. Its all good though.
- Other Thoughts: Again, for the price its a good gps.
