4 out of 5 eggsRecommended for the lost.

Pros: This GPS will get you where you want to go.

Cons: It won't always get you there by the most expedient route, and it doesn't always recognize road construction.

Other Thoughts: I do recommend updating as soon as you get it, as it is much better at finding things afterward.

4 out of 5 eggsGood product

Pros: Nice big screen, lots of cool funtions

Cons: Stuck with the generic voice with no options to change it

Other Thoughts: Be sure to upgrade it before messing around with it. I got used to the original set up on it, and then had to re-adjust to the new version when updated.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: The 1470 picks up signal the fastest of any stand alone GPS I have worked with, has a large easy to read screen, and with the latest firmware updates (a few months ago now) it is very quick to browse through. The window hanger stuck ridiculously well in my Monte Carlo. The only movement it has ever had was when I had forgot to re-lock it after cleaning my windshield. I haven't played with it lately, but when I first got mine I was gone ahead and setup custom firmware to add media player functionality and such, but it made getting to the navigation annoying so I removed it (it was called MioPocket or something like that I believe).

Cons: It took Magellan far to long to finally get around to releasing a properly functioning firmware. The lack of speed limits is probably what has always bothered me more than anything. The touch screen in these is not terrible, but not great either. It feels pretty much like a resistive touch screen always does (fine if that is what you are used to, feels slow/broken if you are used to capacitive like found in quality smartphones). The battery life in this is fairly short, so if your outlets are flaky or you are intending to geocache this is not going to be a good choice.

Other Thoughts: In the future, I will stick to units with lifetime maps. I am not using my anymore as of a couple weeks ago. I am now instead using my NookColor as an even larger GPS, and I might just switch to an integrated unit in my car as I am shopping for a new one of those currently as well.

At one point while turning into Summit Mall in Fairlawn/Akron, OH the unit apparently could not identify a streets name (was in fact the parking lot, not a street) which led the unit to saying "Turn left on... [5 second pause] road"

3 out of 5 eggsBad Updates

Pros: Large screen, slim design, clear voice, very good Newegg price.

Cons: Magellan web site Content Manager software didn't seem to be current. As well, firmware updating from 1.12 to 2.22 (current version is 3.11) downloaded with a Checksum Error which sent GPS unit into a shutdown/restart loop for with Magellan Tech Support says there is no user-fix. Magellan's "Ask Maggie" reports the loop-problem and Tech Support seems to report a fix (perhaps version 3.11?) however, older versions of software/firmware remains available. Battery life is reported to be just 2 hrs.

Other Thoughts: This "might" be a good unit; however, the firmware problem makes me nervous given the need to return the unit for repairs or replacement. I'd be inclined to ask Tech Support for a link to the latest versions of any downloadable file.

2 out of 5 eggsi will pass on this one

Pros: good signal aquisition.
large screen

Cons: mount is horrible, keeps dangling down.
no posted spid limits or car speed like garmoin nuvi
turn on/off sporadicaslly,.. crazy,...
can not customize the icons.
compared to my garmin nuvi 255 , i wish i stuck to garmin.

Other Thoughts: bought it on sale for 89 mainly for the large screen display. features are real basic and for the money i could have done much better with garmin.
skip it, look for a barmin nuvi.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, Solid Performer

Pros: Large screen, sensitive touchscreen, lots of one-tough programmable buttons, nice mounting option. Picks up satellites really fast compared to other units I've owned. The updated firmware really adds and fixes a lot of things, making it a super-fine GPS.

Cons: Sometimes the back-button can get a bit sticky (have to press it a few times until it get's a clue, thus minus an egg), usual GPS common sense regarding routing applies. Not a lot of cases made for this size unit.

Other Thoughts: This unit is a solid GPS that works very well. There's been a lot of talk about the mounting and non-qwerty keyboard. However, update the firmware to the latest 2.22 and you get more user programmable buttons and the keyboard was switched to qwerty. As for the suction mount, it's a slot & key type deal that, after you suction it to the windshield, makes it really easy to slide on and off the unit (for those of us who have had our other GPS's stolen before). It also is no longer in the way of the power cord. The one-touch programmable buttons are very, very handy for those locations you go to the most, or for planning a trip. The larger screen is a HUGE plus. It may be a 4.7" screen, but it's noticeably larger than the 4.3" screens. All-in-all, this unit is a great bargain for the price.
