Pros: E-Ink Pearl screen - it is very clear, like reading out of a printed book except it weighs 6 oz and can hold 1.49GB worth of books. 800x600 resolution in 5" - that's an impressive 200 pixel/inch which definitely makes really small fonts still legible This thing is tiny! - you could fit four of them on a single 8.5" by 11" sheet (two of them would hang over the top of the page by ~1/2 inch) Light Intuitive touch interface Surprisingly excellent pdf reproduction - when the device starts it says it has a version of Adobe Reader Mobile see other thoughts for more detail Battery life is 2 weeks as promised Supports ePUB and PDF - allows Ebook Library Lending (I've used it, it works) Comes with a pointing device (with a built-in storage location) so you don't have to smear up the screen with oily fingers The touch screen uses IR instead of capacitive touch sensing, so there's no additional film over the Eink display
Cons: Can have ghosting of text - the Kindle 3 seems better at this The Kindle also has wifi and (optionally) free 3G service, but since I use this just to read - USB file transfers aren't a big deal - I spend most of my time using the content on the device, not adding content to it. Its a touch screen - so you can smear up the screen by using your fingers - its not terrible and its easy to clean, but still Eink Pearl is faster, but there is still noticeable lag in page turns and a little lag in using the touch interface - its noticeable, but not unacceptable No additional storage - the larger (and more $) PRS-650 to supports SD Cards This thing is tiny! - while highly portable, text sizes can be small, switching from portrait to landscape mode definitely helps here (only a problem for pdfs). Because of how small this device is, I would NOT recommend it if you have trouble reading small fonts - get at least a 6 in reader so that the number of words/page is reasonable (test the Large fo
Other Thoughts: PDFs are designed to be displayed and printed on the page size the particular document was designed for - in many cases Letter (8.5x11), Legal or A4. A 5 inch screen is a lot smaller than a piece of letter paper ~25% of the size, because of this everything must be shrunk down for it to display the full page on the device. This works, but makes things small and questionably legible. Conversely, ePUBs are designed to work on a whole range of screen sizes from the 5 inch Sony Reader to a 21" Desktop Monitor.
The PRS350 can reflow text, cut margins, display the pdf in sections and actually change text size in pdfs - though your mileage will vary there. In addition, it supports Table of Contents navigation, text searching and Go To a Page Number features - all very useful and they work!
I have yet to find a pdf which the Reader does not reproduce accurately, including datasheets and textbooks. Switching to landscape mode is generally necessary to read fine details, but it works fi

Tech Level: 4/5
Rating: 5/5Single purpose ebook reader that does what it should
Pros: EPUB and PDF support. Supports DRM'd books by Adobe and also books from public libraries too. You aren't locked into just Sony's store or software (I haven't installed it). If you have DRM free books you can just drag them onto the drive the reader presents as.
Collections allows you to find books by series/tags/etc on the device if that data is included (such as when books are added to the device by Calibre).
All books treated equally (unlike Nook which has a Nook-book section and a My Documents section).
Very good screen with crisp text. Touchscreen allows you to double-tap words to look them up. It comes with a stylus (with holder in right side of reader) so no need to put too many fingerprints on it.
Cons: No font selection (that I could find).
It could use another font size between XS and S.
Hard to read in the dark, although regular books also have that problem.
Screen is a bit small for PDFs of textbooks and other things that require precise formatting. Landscape mode does help though.
Transferring files to it is more difficult than just buying directly on the device like other readers that have wifi or 3G. If you want something as simple as buy book on the website, have it appear on the reader automatically, you might want a different reader than this.
Other Thoughts: If you're fairly knowledgeable about the different formats, DRM and already have a program like Calibre to organize your books, it should work without a problem for you. You won't have a simple web browser or an mp3 player but a device that simply does what it was designed for: reading ebooks.
