5 out of 5 eggsBest Tablet HW for DIYers In This Price Range

Pros: Best Cheap Tablet for DIYers in this price range at this time (Summer 2013): Bright 7" 1024x600 IPS Screen, TI OMAP 4430 CPU (i.e., 1 Ghz Dual Core Cortex-A9 w/ PowerVR SGX 540 GPU), 512 MB RAM, 8GB EMMC, expandable up to 40 GB by adding a 32GB MicroSDHC, 802.11 b/g/n Wifi.

Bluetooth and Google Play can be enabled by rooting and upgrading the OS. If you're lucky, with an OS upgrade you can also OC the CPU to 1.2 Ghz, though that wasn't stable on my unit. Good battery life.

Cons: The five star rating I gave at top is only if you're willing to root it and upgrade the OS. As shipped, it's more like 3.5-4 stars: the movie formats are limited, BN's modified Android OS doesn't support the Google Play store, Bluetooth isn't enabled, and it ships with an old version of Android that's heavily modified and heavily restricted.

All of that can remedied by upgrading the OS to one of the Android 4.2.2 Jellybean mods available on the internet.

Things that can't be remedied with an OS upgrade: No camera. The screen is 1024x600 (which is still pretty good) instead of 1280x800. Tinny sound from back-facing speaker -- if you plan to watch movies or listen to music on it, you will definitely want decent headphones or earbuds,

Other Thoughts: Rooting and/or upgrading the operating system WILL void your warranty -- but since there's only a 30 day warranty anyway, that's might not be a big concern for you.

Even w/o rooting and upgrading, this is still a pretty good, inexpensive, e-reader & web browsing device with a good IPS screen, if that's all you're interested in.

4 out of 5 eggsValue

Pros: It has a 1024 x 600 color display and 8G of internal storage of which 5G is available for side loading from your desktop computer. A 32G SDHC card can be installed for additional storage but it could be a while before you need it. A number of media formats are supported but I ended up loading mostly pdf and cbz (Comic Book Zip) files for reading. Movies formated for an iPod can be played. Battery life seems good. It is 7" which seems to relate well to the size of a page in a printed book. WiFi connectivity is astounding.

Cons: This isn't the newest BN tablet and it has an older, but adequate, Android OS version. The unit I bought has OS v1.4.3 which requires a a work around to install apps such as Android games. This unit requires a WiFi connection to register with BN before you can initially use it but you can easily turn off the WiFi afterwards. You don't get the "extra content"/push ads that come with that other brand of tablet either.

Other Thoughts: This is more than just an e-reader but less than a more expensive tablet. If you have not previously used an e-reader or tablet, this is a cheap way to get started. Unlike some of the cheap, weird brand tablets, there are specific forums devoted to this unit. Right now this is about 50% of the last new price for this item.
