4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Using as an ebook reader and playing avi files.
I love that it's not a touchscreen.
I tested the wireless internet and it works fine.
Battery last a long time.

Cons: None so far, but I researched and knew what I was getting before purchasing.

Other Thoughts: I'm really enjoying this Augen ereader. I'm glad I bought it.

1 out of 5 eggsJUNK with a capital J!!!!!

Pros: MINUS 2000000000000000000000000000

Cons: More than you have room for!!!!! First, reader doesn't support Adobe DRM, so you can't use it for a reader except for the free "classics" they give you. Unit is now orphaned since the "manufacturer/importer" has gone belly up!!!!! I can't believe NE.com is still selling these garbage cans!
Gave it a 1 because that is as low as I could go!

Other Thoughts: New Egg, you need to throw the stock you have of this unit in the trash can and stop abusing your customers selling garbage like this!!!!!

3 out of 5 eggsAddendum: Jack of all trades, master of one

Pros: Latest Calibre software really helps manage this baby with RSS feeds and eBooks
Decent battery life
Color screen brightness and text clarity
Uh, only $45?!

Cons: Hmm, this is the list of EVERYTHING else, but I'll save you the effort to prioritize:
No support for hyperlinks, whatsoever
Navigation / bookmarking controls are severely lacking, unless you really like reading everything cover to cover.
DRM/ebook purchase virtually non-existant
Movie player does not really work, glitchy and blocky at its very best, even with short AVIs like trailers.
Oh yeah, that music player...doesn't let you read at the same time
Pretty much useless keyboard, I'd be happy with the joystick and 3-4 buttons.
Text to speech only works on a per page basis

Other Thoughts: I am really trying to love this device, but it really only does a couple of things before you feel like having another experience, like an old friend that you can only invite out for coffee. It is an e-reader that can be read at night and on the can, and when my laptop is unavailable (read: kids).

4 out of 5 eggsEasy to Use

Pros: Purchased for an older lady without much tech experience. It powers on very quickly, has an incredibly simple interface, and the web browser is surprisingly snappy at loading mobile pages.

It is able to read many formats and play music, movies and view pictures too.

The screen is bright (adjustable) and clear, and the Zoom feature of the reader is very helpful.

Cons: You have to enable wi-fi each time you turn it on. There's no Zoom in the browser. You can't rename browser favorites.

For some of the ebooks (epub format), the formatting was not recognized - so they kind of show as 1 long paragraph, with the title of the book at the start of each screen, interrupting sentences.

Other Thoughts: For $50, it's a steal. My mom isn't very tech savvy, so she wanted something very simply. She's pleased that it has the little keyboard and thumbstick for easy navigation.

She can read ebooks easily, but the small font with no option to zoom makes using the browser difficult for her. But the instruction book is very clear and she learned how to use the tablet very well!

TMI time...She takes it with her in the bathroom because it's very lightweight and convenient.

4 out of 5 eggsJack of all trades, master of one

Pros: -Bright 800x480 color LCD screen
-Wide variety of eBook formats, plus RSS feeds with Calibre
-Plays movies in mp4, mpeg1 and avi formats
-SD card and USB removable drive options
-Calibre is a MUST, then it really rocks
-Price point (refurb under $50!!)
-Protective case is actually really nice
Seriously, this is one cheap eReader, but hey, it does the job and you can read or watch it in the dark.

Cons: -Kinda bulky with the leather case
-All eBook formats take some tweaking to look normal
-Can't view embedded pictures
-Not for the technology challenged, too many compromised features to satisfy, esp. navigation
-Abysmal documentation
-WiFi pretty much useless
-Music and Movie player controls missing (esp. for audiobooks and full-length movies)
-Can't play music and read at the same time
-Control button taps are LOUD, defeats the purpose of a book reader
-Control joystick is poorly designed, and with no touch screen, this unit is badly in need of hotkeys!

Other Thoughts: I wasn't even shopping for an eReader and the refurb price was too good to pass up as a xmas gift. What I found is that its features are kludgy and would frustrate a child or relaxing to an elderly person and because anyone that is tech savvy can usually afford something much better. Still, I decided to keep it. I read eBooks and RSS feeds in bed and usually in the dark, next to a sleeping girlfriend and for that it is VERY useful, better than all of the non LCD e-Ink readers. I also have kids that would enjoy movies that I load into it for long car rides, another BIG plus. I don't read much DRM content, so hard to say how this experience is.

5 out of 5 eggsAddendum - Video advantage

Pros: It appears to have Divx codec built in - since it is linux, it's the open source version and may not work with the pro version of divx, but lets you to use divx converter to shrink files, change extension to .avi, and get 1-2 hr videos to play - amazing with a 400mhz processor!

Cons: Still having trouble getting any use from wireless. Will connect, but gmail never finishes loading

1 out of 5 eggsNew egg should be ashamed

Pros: Price, features if they work.

Cons: This company (Augen) is out of business and has been for some time.

Other Thoughts: I have been a happy customer of Newegg for years, but now I am starting to wonder.. Is newegg going to service this item or are we stuck with something that should not have been offered?

4 out of 5 eggsGot a second one at this price

Pros: For the price, lots of function. Works great on non-DRM books - nice color screen. Seems to have the last updates before mfg. disapeared. Have not tried DRM book yet. Wireless works, but is slow. Do not use the Calibre PC software on the included disc - get the latest free on-line from the Calibre web site. Nice case.

Cons: Best used with SD card and load books from Calibre on PC, rather than getting books with slow wireless. Instruction manual close to worthless - you will learn more from searching for the forums - folks who used and figured them out.

Other Thoughts: May have problems with DRM. - Try both a couple of low price epub and PDFs before spending a lot on DRM protected books. No real problems with free books, news, cartoons, you can get through Calibre on PC and load on the for AUGEN via usb or direct to SD card.

3 out of 5 eggsSome Good Features

Pros: This unit has bright full colors and is really a personal media player as well as an ereader. Photos show up well, as do videos. It advertises "avi" and "MP4" files as playable, but I found it plays "wmv," "flv," and "3gp" as well. I couldn't get it to recognize "mpg" or "mov," but that's all it wouldn't play. It plays MP3 music files and audiobooks, but there is no way to bookmark an audiobook, so this unit isn't very useful to play audiobooks unless you want to start from the beginning each time you start a long file. It has a "text to speech" feature that includes a fairly decent voice for reading ebooks but with some peculiarities; for example, it can't read contractions, but it sounds better than Microsoft Sam or Microsoft Anna or even some commercial "natural voices." Its menu is intuitive and easy to follow. It can recognize many ebook formats, including MS Word files, text files, epub files, and others. It comes with 150, books, but nothing published in the last 75 years.

Cons: It has a painfully slow processor. I couldn't get it to do anything when I connected to my library's wifi. I tried for 30 minutes to check my email, and the hourglass never went away, so don't count on using Internet with this unit. The battery life seems very short before it needs recharging, but the unit will run off the electrical charging connection, so if you find a plug, you can still use the unit on low battery as it recharges. The default font is huge and very bold, and you can't make universal changes in the default font. You have to change the look of each book you want to read, but at least it remembers the font face and size you have chosen when you return to the book.

Other Thoughts: This is a fairly simple and straightforward ereader/PMP. I wanted it especially for its text-to-speech capability, which could be better, but it's not bad. There is no control of the speed of the speech, which would be nice. It also would be nice to have internet connectivity, but it just doesn't seem to work, at least for me. I got a refurblished unit that came with a scratched screen, but maybe that's what you get with a refurbished unit.
