HP aims at the top niche of the home server market and hits the spot with the MediaSmart series. This compact box is more than just a drive controller and some connectors. It's powered by an energy efficient Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor with 1GB of DDR2 memory. Windows Home Server operating system helps you easily store, access, share and protecting your digital files.
The LX195 features a 640GB SATA drive for expansive storage. If that isn't enough, 4 external USB 2.0 ports and a Gigabeit Ethernet port offer connectivity for external storage devices. It supports both Windows and Mac for added usability!
Automatically manage files, back up multiple computers and deliver security protection. Enjoy the functionality home server system with HP MediaSmart LX195!
Pros: Small-ish, low power (26 watts), it runs Microsoft's wonderful Windows Home Server, hard drives expandable via USB
Cons: Included hard drive is only 640GB and NOT the green model (it used the WD blue drive)
Other Thoughts: No room to add hard drives internally (not a con as that was the way it was designed). If you are looking for an expandable unit, check out HP's ex485.

One HOT Home Server
Reviewed By: Egger on 9/12/2009
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Small, nearly silent. Sleek design. VERY easy set-up with included software making Windows Home Server even easier to use. Adding networked computers is extremely easy using software included on the server itself. Tasks and folders already set up but easily configurable. Works well as an iTunes server.
Cons: This baby runs HOT!! It reports system temperature at idle to be 55 C, and I have seen 60 C during HDD tasks. The drive becomes very hot. Small 70mm fan runs at about 950 rpm (see "nearly silent" above) no matter how hot the system temp. HP tech support (very easily reached with negligible hold times) told me that theirs "runs at 55C" and suggested that I run it with the side taken off. I replaced the stock fan with a 2500 rpm fan and got the temp down to 38 C at the cost of loud fan noise. I finally attached a small USB fan (Thermaltake) and placed it outside of the unit. Quietly running at 39 C. There was an early software problem that led to false heat readings, but this has been solved. These temps are real, verified by opening the case and feeling the almost too-hot-to-touch components.
Other Thoughts: I was impressed at the HP tech support in that they are easily reached and seemed knowledgeable. They clearly know that heat is an issue with this unit. A fan speed control add-in has been developed for the larger HP server but none for this one as yet. 5 eggs except for the heat issue. Come on, HP, give us a fan speed control add-in!
As usual, Newegg service impeccable!

Pros: This is really a great little home server. For me; smaller, lower power but still with all the features of larger Home Servers is the way to go. In my house it backs up a PC and two laptops, one of which is a MAC and it streams my music to my Squeezebox player and video to my X-Box. This little Server has been running 24/7 for several months now. I can’t imagine needing anything more. I upgraded from a NAS, which in comparison was buggy, hard to configure and frankly I didn't trust it with my data.
Cons: Its now priced lowere then when i bought it ;-(
Other Thoughts: Remote access to my data and music is a nice feature.

Time Machine support is half-baked
Reviewed By: Steeeeeeeeve on 8/10/2009
Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Very quiet and low power. For a server that is on 24/7 (can be put to sleep on a schedule) this is a great machine. I never liked the thought of leaving a computer sucking down over a 100++ watts on all day long.
Cons: I have one Mac in my house that needs a backup solution. Instead of buying a new external hard drive solely for that computer I purchased this home server to take care of all the back up needs in the house (2 windows and 1 mac).
It is printed on the box that this home server will support Time Machine, but I have spend hours trying to get it to work...including calls to HP tech support.
On a brand new home server install with over 500 gigs of free space on the hard drive I have been unable to create a time machine image over 140 gigs. My goal is to create an image around 300 gigs (mac HDD is 250). Even though I have plenty of room I get constant errors that there is not enough free space.
I have tried everything that I can think of and I cannot get an image large enough to back up my mac computer.
Only once was I able to create an image of 140 gigs, subsequent trials usually yield 80-90 gigs even though there is plenty of room.
There better be a fix soon or I am sendin
Other Thoughts: People may complain (on other forums) about the single core atom...but for a server you really don't need a ton of horsepower. The dual core atom (330) would have been nice though.
I noticed the Twonky media sever taking a lot of cpu cycles so I uninstalled it and really haven't missed it...but have definitely enjoyed the increased performance.
