2 out of 5 eggs2GB Update

Pros: None for the memory.

Cons: Wish it was either 2x1GB or 2x2GB.

Other Thoughts: Correction from my previous post. The memory is registered not unbuffered. The HP part number is 500209-061.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Not sure yet. Just opened the server.

Cons: This what I have discovered now that I have taken delivery of the server. The 250GB drive is NOT an HP drive. It is a Western Digital drive which is not RAID certified. Furthermore, the only match found on the Newegg site is for a refurbished drive. I tried to determine the drive before ordering via a Chat session, but was told that technial advice was not supplied by newegg. The system specifications are not advice, they are simple facts that enable us to make informed decisions. The HP drive I ordered is going back via RMA.

Secondly, as one of the other reviewers noted, the memory provided is a single stick so if you would like dual channel memory this needs to be matched or discarded. The installed memory is 2GB unbuffered DDR3 which costs as much as 8GB of Kingston memory.

2 out of 5 eggscheap price == cheaply constructed

Pros: Cheap price.

Cons: The construction on the case was abysmal...
1. The metallic hinges are fragile
2. The fan behind the HD's is place too closely and hits the cables
3. Their is no back-plane for the SATA HD bay, and yet...
4. You must remove the front of the case and the entire HD bay to add a new HD.
5. One of the cable management hooks interferes with the placement of the included HD's SATA cable -- requiring a bad crimp in the cable. I ended up ripping that out.
6. It includes no media. Not even a driver disk. Most respectable servers come with a manufacturer-customized Windows server disc that works with either a standard retail license, or a custom OEM license.
7. It is a dual-channel motherboard, but it comes with a single stick of 2gig memory.... meaning you either buy an extra 2gig stick, or run in single-channel mode. It should instead come with 2 x 1gig sticks.
8. It comes with no extra SATA cables... this is about the only fault that I can at least understand, at this $$.

Other Thoughts: Continuing on with the Cons...
9. The onboard RAID controller does not have a flat option for RAID-1. Instead, it calls it RAID 1+0. (RAID 1+0 is another form of RAID...) So when you want two drives in RAID-1, you put it in RAID 1+0... this is a poor design, and for me at least, leads to a little mistrust with the RAID setup.
10. We have 4 HDD's in 2 RAID-1 arrays, and yet I can find no way to explicitely tell the system BIOS or RAID BIOS which array to attempt to boot from first. This is not a problem for us... but it is yet another shortcomming.
11. Windows 2008 R2 does not have bundled drivers for this system's RAID controller... and yet, as mentioned already, this server does not come with any drivers.

This system, from top-to-bottom, feels like it was quickly and cheaply engineered and constructed. There's absolutely zero attention to detail. It's hard to trust a system like that for anything serious.

Normally I like HP servers. I neither like or recommend this

5 out of 5 eggsCheap ESXi 5.0 server w/VMDirectPath support server

Pros: This is the cheapest, well built system I could find for running ESXi 5.0 with VMDirectPath. Plenty of PCIe slots, lots of room in the case and a hefty power supply. LO100i remote management included.

Cons: The default remote management is basic with power on/off support. However, LO100i Advanced is needed for remote console access, and requires a separate license. Take advantage of the online demo license to try it before you spend $200 and make sure it's a fit for you. I didn't like the remote console mouse support. Fortunately, ESXi doesn't really need a console mouse, and VMware's remote MKS console works great, so I skipped buying an advanced license and bought more memory.

Other Thoughts: Moved my entire lab to this box and went virtual. Added two Western Digital WD2003FYYS 2TB SATA Enterprise drives for local VMFS storage (no on-board RAID support with ESXi), another 10GB of memory and an Intel EXPI9402PTBLK PRO 1000 PT Dual Port Server NIC. Have my NI PCIe-GPIB passed thru to either a linux or Windows VM. Works great running the lab, my web site and home network all at the same time! ESXi 5.0 rocks!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Entry Level Box

Pros: -Quiet (relative)
-Quad core
-TONS of DIMM slots
-Runs cool
-ILO integrated (basic)
-Works with ESXi
-Very fast box
-Uses standard SATA drives
-Good internal cooling design
-Upgradable to two processors (check HP specs, the specs here need to be updated)
-Lots of USB ports

Cons: -The lock needed to remove the front cover feels flimsy
-Need to completely remove front cover to remove side door. Have a ML350 G4 and this design where the door swiveled was much better.
-ILO is basic, no remote console that I could find
-Plastic baffles don't seem to sit right internally, mine don't really clip into anything they almost just sit

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm very happy with the purchase. A great box that can be upgraded to be a powerhouse. Runs a lot quieter then my older proliants. A well designed cooling system inside, air flows directly over the CPU and RAM under a baffle. Would buy another one if I had room for it. For those that don't want to pay and arm and a leg for the HP enterprise drives, this server allows you to just use any old SATA 3.5" drive.
