5 out of 5 eggsCool little box!

Pros: Easy set up.
Quiet.
Small footprint.
Easy recovery for bad system drive.

Cons: The only complaints I have are:
1. Storage Status did not identify degrading drive. Everything was marked as healthy, even though I tested the drive and it had multiple bad sectors. Not sure why the status never showed this.
2. When recovering the system drive, the name of the server would go to the default name, even though I named the server in the recovery wizard. It actually took me a second run through of the recovery to get the name change to take.

5 out of 5 eggsHP NAS ROCKS!

Pros: Rock solid. I wish that I could still get HP NAS boxes at a home server price point. I wouldn't sell mine for $1000.

Cons: No Windows Home Server support.

Other Thoughts: I wish a bought a bunch

5 out of 5 eggsCool Unit

Pros: Great solution for backups and file storage.
Expandable to more TB than I will likely ever need.
Quiet, small, very well finished.
Doesn't look out of place on a desk or in the living room.

Cons: None. Network transfer speeds could be faster. Usually 2-4 MB/sec, sometimes slower. I did the majority of my data migration via eSATA.

Other Thoughts: This isn't a con since I'm attempting to use this for more than it was designed to do. But some shoppers might be curious...

Atom processor is sufficient for what this system is designed to do. I installed WHS 2011 and used media streaming locally, it was not the fastest and there is a great deal of lag when trying to rewind/fast forward.

I may upgrade the RAM to a 4GB DIMM as some have done so successfully, we shall see.

2 out of 5 eggsSmall office

Pros: This is a nice unit and easy to setup remote access and file shares and permissions.

Cons: DDNS built-in services only allowed for services that cost money and not all services that would include free ones such as DynDNS.
-Slow my client edits text files from 3-4 computers in the office and even when only working from 1-2 computers it can be slow and cumbersome to open and edit and save text files. I believe this is because of the Hard drive which spec has been left out of the details.

Other Thoughts: I now have to either upgrade the Hard drive or Return this unit to find something that will work better for my client.

5 out of 5 eggsBang for the buck

Pros: Remote Access, HP Quality, Ease of setup, Value
For the price ($275 after rebate) I was ready to pay for a synology SAN, I have a full blown home server.
Part of the setup was registering my windows live account, that somehow allows me to have my own domain for accessing my server and network remotely (SSL) all for free (BONUS, I didn't expect).
I threw a couple of old sata drives I had laying around in in it, I chose one to be formatted and made part of the total storage, and kept the other with data intact as a share for my network to be able to see. (all easy to do)

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I did have one glitch in the setup, it asks for a server name and I selected one different than the default. After a mandatory reboot, the setup couldn't 'see' the server (I assume because of the different name) on the network. Also the built in web addresses for the links all use the default name, so I suggest leaving the name of the server alone until you are familiar with all the places you might need to change it.

2 out of 5 eggsBeware! Old version of WHS

Pros: Quick shipping.

Cons: Although the device is described as running Windows Home Server, it is the old 2008 version. The specs and description did not specify a version, and it was a bad assumption on my part that it would be running the 2011 version. Disappointing.

5 out of 5 eggsWireless capable?

Pros: Seems like a good deal

Cons: No idea or mention of wireless support

Other Thoughts: I am asking if anyone who hs purchased this or, has worked with it can tell me if it has a slot on the MB (if it has a MB) for a wireless card or another method of making it work wirelessly? How about the USB type units that work on a laptop. I will say that I have a wireless network in my home but I really don't have a great understanding how networking actually works.
I am looking at installing this in a gun safe to keep it secure in case of robery The safe will be located about ten feet from my router. Does anyone think that this would cause a problem with reception being located in a steel box? I would have to do some work to run a cable into the safe thats why I was looking at the wireless angle.

5 out of 5 eggsHappy Data Vault Cust

Pros: Very happy with this product. It arrived amazingly fast and the rebate check arrived within 2 weeks! Be careful HP has a short window (like 10 or 15 days) for the postmarking on the rebate requests.
Unit is small and well made. The HD trays, when empty, appear a bit flimsy but this should not be an issue in that most people will not swap drives frequently.
I’m using it primarily for backups and it works very well for this. However, don’t let the name fool you, this is full Windows Home Server…so it appears you can use it things like media streaming, etc.
Initial setup of server and client software is a breeze.

Cons: It's a little louder than I expected. So if you are running it continuously you may not want it on your desktop.

3 out of 5 eggsAdditional Hard Drives

Pros: The server has been working wonderfully, backing my computers up and storing data.

Cons: Be extremely careful when purchasing additional drives. I purchased drives that turned out to be "advanced format". The drives worked at first, but six months later they quit working. I am extremely frustrated because I can't figure out which drives will work and which won't based on spec sheets. Some mention "advanced format", but others just ignore it.

Other Thoughts: This potential problem should be mentioned more prominently in the documentation. I shouldn't have to find out six months after I install the machine during a call to tech support.

5 out of 5 eggsExtremely Happy

Pros: I bought this X310 as a personal home server for music, movies, docs, etc. I was impressed with the packaging and ease of installation. The possibilities this thing has seems endless. It's not on 2011 so Drive extend is still possible, the remote access from work to even my andoid phone makes this worth far more than I paid. The Add-ins available and ease of install are amazing. It's fast enough for anything I throw at it, streaming movies to my xbox or music to my phone or laptops haven't had any issues what so ever. Perfect addition!!

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Just an fyi came across a vbscript error on one of my laptops and wouldn't install the connector. Tried command prompt "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" didn't work. After searching for quite a while found the fix which is running the McAfee removal tool which automatically fixes this vbscript error. (Eventhough you don't have this AV) Just figured I would post this info if anyone installing a connector on Win7 64bit has the same issue.
