It's powered by an extremely energy efficient Intel Atom 1.66GHz processor with 1GB of DDR2 memory. It already includes a large 500GB SATA drive for great storage, and you can add additional hard drives without tools. Nice little b000x
- Pros: Cheap, you can't build something for this price, ASUS makes pretty decent stuff. VERY small foot print, perfect if you don't have a lot of room or if you are a tightwad with the electric usage, the Atom CPU draws really low power. EASY to add another hdd and came with extra screws as well. Also, ALL THE SOFTWARE is there, the restore disc, software install and OEM WHS Software. So, as long as you don't loose the mainboard, you can be back up and running if the hdd bombs.
- Cons: 500GB is sort of small, you'd think they could get you a 640GB or even 750GB. I'm sure ASUS could swing a good price with whatever hdd mfg. On that note, my unit came with a Seagate hdd. I've been a pretty big believer in Seagate up until this year, I've had lots fail on me. It really is too bad there is no WD Green drive in there, it would make for a better hdd I think. Also, keep in mind that this is ONE 500GB hdd, so there is no redundancy with this unit, you'll need to toss in another hdd to get that.
- Other Thoughts: WHS makes sense for most small business people of households with a number of kids / computers. The backups work perfect as I've had to do 2 restores. Pop in the bootable cd, log into your server, select the computer you want to restore and then go eat some McSlings while it does its thing. Works great.
Asus Tech
- Pros: Very nice product with super features and software. But DOA: unit would not boot. Called Asus tech and they are sending a replacement unit. Very small and compact, does not take up much desk space.
- Cons: DOA, only one expansion slot for another HD
- Other Thoughts: Will add a WD drive in the second slot to increase capacity. Wanted this in place to provide easy backups in addition to backup drive in my main computer. Included backup software should do the trick.

So easy my mother can use it
- Pros: I bought this for my mother as an xmas gift. She is by no means a computer expert and was able to setup the device and get all of her backups scheduled. She is now experimenting with the easy to create websites for sharing pictures.
I would highly recommend this for any son/daughter who provides distant technical support to their parent(s). With WHS you can remotely logon to the server and access any computer configured on the network. The remote logon will allow you to use terminal services to conncet to the computer or the server itself.
- Cons: none so far
- Other Thoughts: We originally looked at the HP Media Smart servers but with the size of HDs now we had no need for 4 drive bays. This device has an open bay where another HD can be installed; added a 1.5TB which should provide more than enough storage for backups, pictures, and misc files.
Great Home Server
- Pros: Compact, quiet and easy to setup. I backup a home PC and laptop to it. I also use it to share media with other devices I own. I already used an online backup service and I not run it on the server instead of the PC and laptop.
- Cons: None. There is plenty of room for expansion.
- Other Thoughts: Backing up to something like this is great. I still recommend backup the server up online. The backups do you no good if your PC's, laptop and server all burnup in fire or some other disaster.
It can take a lot
- Pros: I bought this to go green. I upgraded the 500GB to 1TB Green because I had the extra drive. It comes with a Seagate 7200 Drive. Power usage comes in at about 21W idle.
Going Green, I put a USB TV Tuner (ATI HD 600) on the system and a DVR software (BeyondTV) and it is great as a DVR system too. I was able to watch live TV wireless (G) over the home network. I didn't try it with a lot of other activity at the same time.
Installed and iTunes server for the home, works fine.
Setup was very easy and I took out the 500GB and reinstalled to 1TB, which was easy or the network.
- Cons: I put too much addin's that I need more memory. Virtual Server only has 48MB free after I loaded it up. No Problem Memory is cheap. I need to order that next time NewEgg has a deal.
- Other Thoughts: If you are looking at this server, buy the 500GB and upgrade it. The two 1TB in the more expensive version seem cheap on ASUS' part.
