The most power a CB can put out is 4 watts at the antenna, right? Well, mostly right: that's a normal AM transmission. If you put all of the power into a single one of the "sidebands" instead of into both, you can legally put out more power. More power is more range. And it reduces crowding on the channels: an upper sideband signal won't interfere with a lower sideband signal even on the same frequency.

This unit can transmit in ordinary AM, on the "upper" sideband, or on the "ower" sideband, all controlled by a single switch. Tone controls allow you to adjust the audio for better sound.

Lots of long distance contacts with a 3-element beam and a 5/8 ground plane. Cons: 12.8 VDC only so you need a power supply if you want to use it indoors. The Cobra 146 is AC powered. Debated back and forth about Cobra and other SSB’s, but finally selected the 148GTL. I’ve had this unit for about six weeks and I’m really stoked about all the bells and whistles. The built-in SWR calibration meter is sweet. I have this unit set up in my F150 with Barjan 4’ co-phase antennas, but will eventually setup with a single Firestik KW5. Cons: One of the mounting screw came in the box without threads on it. Other Thoughts: Saved me a ticket on I-40 going to Laughlin this weekend. 5 out of 5 people found this review helpful. Did you?
