3 out of 5 eggsWorks fine

Pros: The XT511 is a decent product. It handles FRS communications very nicely and the local NOAA weather stations can also be heard fairly well. The weather alert feature works perfectly so if you enable it, expect to be alarmed when the weekly tests are run by NOAA!

Cons: The AM and FM receiver is not terribly sensitive. It certainly picks up the local stations fine, but don't expect to hear much more than that. My last crank handle radio is an old analog Grundig and it's far more sensitive. Also, the battery life of the XT511 is fairly dismal in comparison to other portables I own. With roughly 20 minutes of playing time per day, expect to have to recharge this after a bit more than a week. Under the same conditions, my cheap little Grundig will run for months.

Other Thoughts: In spite of the lackluster AM BCB reception I would still purchase this item. The ease of use makes it a snap for anyone to use this unit.

5 out of 5 eggsNice combo AM/FM/NOAA/GMRS radio

Pros: Picks up AM/FM/NOAA plus 22 channel GMRS w/privacy codes.
Multiple power options, including hand crank.
Relatively compact design, BIG handle, detachable shoulder strap, detachable hand mic.

Cons: Sturdy but not rugged (don't drop it).
Not the camouflage version.

Other Thoughts: Have not tested max range.
