On October 17, 1949, Frederic Chopin, one of the most influential composers for the piano, succumbed to sickness and died at the young age of 39. Three hours prior to that, in the world according to this RPG, Chopin saw a dream of a fairy-tale land populated by people with incurable diseases but also magical powers.

Eternal Sonata takes place in this dream world. Chopin comes into contact with Polka, a young girl who resides with her mother in the village of Tenuto. Polka is near her death, and Chopin, Polka, and her young friend Allegretto as they look for some way to make use of Polka's great powers to help save her. It's a whimsical fantasy, but this RPG designed by developer tri-Crescendo also a complex and combo-based battle system of swords and magic weaponry. In keeping with inspiration, music and story play a big part in Eternal Sonata. Performing the piano numbers that Chopin left to the world is Russian pianist Stanislav Bunin, with musical composition by noted game composer Motoi Sakuraba.

4 out of 5 eggsInteresting, a bit short, though

Pros: - AMAZING soundtrack (Motoi Sakuraba of Tales of fame, plus Chopin)
- Unique battle system
- Great Japanese voice acting
- Encore mode (like a New Game+ but really hard)

Cons: - Bonus dungeon is basically a grind festival before the only hard boss (on the regular difficulty)
- Battle system is initially a bit too simple
- Decent English voice acting, but it doesn't fit well with the characters
- Have to play the entire game before the harder mode is available
- Game becomes a little cutscene happy towards the end

Other Thoughts: Skip the cutscenes about Chopin (real Chopin, not in game Chopin). They are very lengthy, and the historical knowledge is worthless. You can go back and listen to the Chopin music afterwards in game (full jukebox mode), so there's no need to watch a history lesson).

5 out of 5 eggsGorgeous

Pros: Gorgeous graphics. I wouldn't recommend it at the launch price, but I can recommend it at the current price. You feel like you are in an anime. The eyes of the characters can be downright creepy because of how they grab your attention when they look at the screen. It gave the characters soul that you don't see in a lot of other games.

Overall, a nice story, beautiful environments, and really nicely-made characters. Also, having Japanese audio as an option was a huge bonus.

Cons: One of the bonus dungeons is a huge grind-fest. It did add 7-15 hours to gameplay, but remember, it's one dungeon. I definitely took my time completing it.

The story is pretty linear, and the combat can get very easy. At one part, you get a lot of characters to manage, but thankfully the game designers made leveling up easy at that point. The game also is short for a JRPG.

Some scenes at the end don't have subtitles, so I had no idea what they were saying since I had it switched to Japanese audio.

Other Thoughts: I don't think the bonus dungeon I went through is necessary, even though they should have made it shorter and added more dungeons instead.

Without the bonus dungeon, I got around 24 hours of gameplay. With the dungeon, I clocked around 35-40.

I also liked the combat system. It actually evolves with the story. You lose some abilities like some time before you move to think of your next step, but you trade that with being able to use more attacks.

The length is short compared to JRPGs on the PS2. Compared to other recent games in this current console generation, it's decent.

Overall, this is one of the reasons why JRPG fans are buying an Xbox 360.

5 out of 5 eggsBegging for a sequel

Pros: The graphics are stunning if you are a fan of anime; the in-game music fits nicely in with the genre's lineage; the cut-scene piano performances of Chopin's scores are masterful; the controls are simple, but by the end of the game battles can be fast, complex and furious.

Cons: The English dubs are terrible and will likely ruin the beauty of this game for most people. Fortunately you can play the game in the original and well-acted Japanese with decently-translated English subtitles. Be sure to switch back to English before starting the final chapter - a large portion of the ending does not have English subtitles for some odd reason.

Other Thoughts: I played this game through with a friend who enjoys WoW. She did all the world exploring and I took control of 2 of three characters in battles. We had a blast and would have loved to have a third player join us. If you like JRPGs and have an XBOX360 there is little reason not to play this one. It *is* very easy and linear, but if you have a problem with that you aren't approaching the game the way the designers intended. Play it like it's a good book or film.

2 out of 5 eggsGood Idea poorly executed

Pros: Great graphics and music. Interesting story concept.

Cons: The scene directing and dialog are so horrible I keep wanting to skip the cut scenes, but I don’t want to miss out on the plot. The combat system is initially fun, but as you progress all the fun is sucked out by time restrictions. Additionally the combat controls become more clunky and difficult use. Many instances of "that's not what I wanted to do".

Other Thoughts: After about 10 hours of playtime I have yet to be hooked by the story and the many annoyances make me not want to play any more of it. There are too many better games.

4 out of 5 eggsIf only it were longer

Pros: Beautiful artwork

Excellent Battle system

Unique premise.

Cons: Short and linear quest

Other Thoughts: The music theme and the use of Frederic Chopin sets this game apart from the usual RPG fare. The game is gorgeous, I can't begin to tell how impressive the artwork is. The only qualm I have with the game is its length. Although if you have limited free time that actually would be pro. I wish there were more side quests, but the game is excellent for RPGs fans. For those that hate turn based battles this game is for you. It has an turn based/action hybrid system.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Experience

Pros: This game is simply stunning. For those of you who enjoy the RPG experience, this game is for you. The Cell-Shadded Graphics are just amazing. This game is based on Choplin's life, and brings some good historic information.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I am simply enthralled with this game. It is very enjoyable. The battle system uses a real time/Turn based approach, very addicting.
