Features

Take Part in a Gaming Experience that Sets New Standards – The first in the series developed for a simultaneous release on multiple high-definition consoles, FINAL FANTASY XIII pushes new boundaries in cinematic presentation, sound and gameplay.

Experience the Unity of Speed and Strategy with the Ultimate Active Time Battle system – The familiar system has evolved, granting players the freedom of executing numerous commands in a single turn with the multi-slot ATB gauge. Whether inputting singular commands in each slot for consecutive attacks, or expending multiple slots at once to activate a devastating blow, it’s up to the players to respond effectively to the battle conditions at hand.

Adapt to the Ever-Changing Tide of Battle with Paradigms – A brand-new game mechanic enabling players to assign roles to their party members at any time during battle, shifting between combat paradigms. Consisting of various combinations of the game’s six roles, ranging from Commando, the offensive specialist, to Medic, the quintessential healer, paradigms allow players to respond and adapt instantly to any given situation to turn the tide and seize victory.

3 out of 5 eggsAt the lower end of the series

Pros: The character advancement system is new and interesting. It is a derivative of the system from 10 and 12.

The graphics are beautiful.

The story is pretty interesting.

Cons: The camera controls suck. When you have control, the camera is a fixed distance from the character, and tries to move as little as possible relative to the map when you move your character. Movement seems to be based on the map position of the camera, rather than position relative to the character, making it impossible to keep the camera at a useful angle in many situations. When the computer controls the camera (battles, some navigation parts), it seems more focused on 'cinematic quality' than anything useful, often making it impossible to see important things in the "scene", such as tags popping up over enemies, telling what they are doing in combat.

Combat controls are horrible. It is a bad combination of action/menu RPG. 90% of this could have been fixed by allowing the right analog stick to select the monster, and the left to select the actions, rather than having the left do everything, in sequential order- slowing things down.

Other Thoughts: Continuing the last part of the cons, since characters move in combat (out of your control), what was a useful action, could become a bad action, forcing you to backup and waste more time, or be stuck with a less than ideal action.

The music sounds similar in style to Chrono Cross, lots of high pitched squealy/squeaky stuff, but with annoying lyrics as well (youtube the heavily autotuned - by squeenix, not the person who posted it, 'cacoon de chocobo'). If you hated the chrono cross music, then you'll probably want to mute this as well...

The story tellers got lazy and put in a 'datalog' which gives important points not told in the narrative, a very lazy and bad decision IMO, which ruins the game flow and/or story line (reading them or not reading them, respectively).

Worth about 1/3 the price of a new 360 game, not really more than that.

3 out of 5 eggsOpen game?

Pros: Haven't played it just yet, but I am sure I will like it.

Cons: No plastic wrapping that new games are suppose to have. The game case has a cracked corner, scotch tape on the top of the case to hold it shut, and a security shut sticker with a barcode on that side that had been removed (fingernail indentation on the plastic of the case) and set back in the location it was taken off from.

The 1st disc was scratched up, though it still plays (scratches appear to be game use scratches - possible sliding around on the drive tray after turning the game off). The 3rd disc was smudged in weird speckled patterns.

Other Thoughts: This is the first problem with a product ordered off of newegg as far as I can remember. The game just seems like someone decided to play it, then throw it back in and expect to get away with it without caring who it is that buys the game.

I am extremely annoyed by the quality the game has arrived in.

4 out of 5 eggsBeautiful but somewhat restrictive

Pros: Beautiful game. Runs flawlessly. Good length of content.
Combat is smooth and full length animated sequences abound.

Cons: Very very restrictive on game play. It literally forces you to go down a certain path for the first 20-30 hours of the game. You don't get any real option to DO anything other than the main quest until far far into the game.

Other Thoughts: Low replay value, as there isn't anything to do other than the main quest until disk 3. It would be 5 stars if the game was a bit deeper.

1 out of 5 eggs"Why am I playing this game?"

Pros: Good graphics.
Bought on sale for $25, sold for $23 a month later.

Cons: Detestable characters.
Boring, long, incessant cut-scenes.
Boring, obtuse combat system.
Confusing, uninvolved story with hardly any sense of place or setting (no towns).
Unnecessary leveling system (hold down B to level!!).
Complicated equipment leveling system.

Other Thoughts: I liked FF9 and 10, so I decided to try this one which was nothing like them in my opinion. None of the feel of those two games is there. This game is loaded with cutscenes and some of the most insufferable characters. The gameplay mechanics do not add to the experience either in my opinion; combat is slow and predictable, the leveling system is completely on rails, and the equipment upgrade system was beyond me. I did not finish the game, so maybe it gets better; I've heard it does. But I played it for 12-14 hours, turned it off one night and said "Why am I playing this?" Do you want to spend 25 hours on a game before it gets good, as I've heard is the case?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Game

Pros: Excellent graphics. The cutscenes are integrated pretty well, and I like the battle system better than FFXII. Everyone complains about the lack of control in the battles, but to get the full effect of the game, you have to learn how to perform some pretty quick actions in rapid succession. I think having direct control over only one character at a time is realistic and makes for interesting gameplay.

Cons: Could have made some more side missions, especially early on. I don't think the lack of a FFVII-type free roam system is a detriment, though; even in FFVII, you were still basically going in a linear path.

2 out of 5 eggsPass

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: If you can pick this up in a $10 bin somewhere go for it. But for any more then that it is absolutely mediocre as a FF game. Very linear, half of your team is just annoying to watch in the cut scenes. The battle system doesn't give you near the control you want. All in all it's just not a good game.

2 out of 5 eggsDON'T FALL FOR IT

Pros: Hey, it's a new final fantasy and boy does it look pretty. The new combat is nice and the characters are interesting.

Cons: Can't chose party members till 25+hrs no free roam till then either. FF12 was sooo much better. this game was all hype for the 4 YEARS i waited for it. huge disappointment.

Other Thoughts: I hate to say it but this game really sucks...

3 out of 5 eggsA few Complaints

Pros: Awesome Graphics, great voice acting

Cons: Don't like the battle system. Its similar to FFX-2's battle system but I loved FFX-2's battle system and this doesn't compare.

The story is a little odd to me.

Other Thoughts: Still waiting for FF's that are as good as FF7/8/X were.

2 out of 5 eggsExtremely linear

Pros: Graphics, combat style (arguable), and story

Cons: so linear it ruins the overall experiance. there is no freedom to do what you want, instead, you walk in strait determined paths the whole game and press a repeatedly. that is the game. you are watching a movie that requires you to press "a" a lot.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't have bought this had I known it was designed for a 4 year old.
