5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: Great visuals
an incredible story
Music of pure beauty
Sad, emotionally powerful cutscenes.
Rare example of mechanics as plot device.

A surreal/dreamlike experience.
You are a father trying to find a cure for his daughter's terminal disease in a post apocalyptic world. Not the usual post apocalypse scene: it's bright and sunny, there are some ruins to look at if you pay attention, and A LOT is happening behind the scenes... but the game doesn't explore that. To explain better, think of most other games you've played; the character in that game was probably some amazing hero who just happens to unlock all of the secrets of the world on his way to do whatever it was he set off to do. In NieR, you are a father in a world with many secrets, but the scope of the story is more realistic in that over the course of your search for a cure, you will not learn all the secrets about the world. Your adventure is but a tiny part of the world, and the more you learn, the more mysterious it ge

Cons: The gameplay is a bit repetitive. The game isn't long enough for that to be a real deal breaker, but if you try a "low level challenge" then the gameplay will work in your favor. If you don't know, low level challenge is where you purposely try NOT to level up. I did it by accident on hard mode... and some boss fights took 2-3 hours of the most adrenaline inducing dance of death I've ever had in any game. That's 2-3 hours without dying mind you; those bosses have a LOT of health; but the combat being simple means that you can keep fighting for hours, and it's a challenge of your grace and nerves. My friend who took his time to level up complains the game is too easy (although he is on normal difficulty), so I think in order to have a good amount of fun, play on hard mode and try not to level up too much.

This game has its japanese moments in story. Also one or two scenes feel rushed and cheesy, but the emotional impact they were attempting was clear to me.

Other Thoughts: This is one of my favorite games.

1. Ocarina of Time
2. Ico
3. NieR
