Nokia's Best Phone as of 12/08
- Pros: This is, overall, the best phone available as of Dec '08...in my opinion. I have had the N95-3, the N82-1, and many other unlocked phones. I am a phone junkie. This phone has the most complete feature set available as I'm writing this. The OLED screen's contrast ratio and black level lay the smack down on anything else I've seen up to this point. It's a great 5MP point and shoot, a full fledged GPS unit (no carrier's making you use their monthly subscription solution), a full blown MP3 player with dedicated music controls, a video recorder at DVD quality, etc. The list never ends. The Symbian OS that these Nokia phones operate on is the most popular phone OS globally. There are countless apps, themes, games, plugins, widgets, etc... to download for these phones. Unless you want a touch screen, or a QWERTY keyboard, this is the phone to have right now. Awesome device.
- Cons: That you don't already have one of these. Buy it, GO GO GO!!!
Love this phone
- Pros: I was looking for three things in a phone and the Nokia N85 delivers.
1. Good phone. The phone is good. Voice quality seems good. The speakerphone is nice and loud. Texting is fast and easy.
2. Camera. Excellent camera for a phone, far beyond anything out there. I wouldn't really call it 5MP but it takes a good picture, especially in good light. The camera is also very functional, with a strong flash, red-eye reduction, self timer, white balance adjustment, burst modes, GPS photo tagging, etc. etc.
3. Music player. Uses a standard headphone jack. Plays lots of formats, has FM radio and FM transmitter so you can transmit your MP3s to your car stereo. Can play any of your MP3s as a ringtone. You can configure the WiFi to subscribe to your podcasts.
Features aside, this phone just feels good in your hand or your pocket. The slider doesn't feel cheap or cheesy. Some people have reported the phone isn't put together well but mine feels solid.
Charges from USB p
- Cons: It's a little slow at times; not as responsive as I'd like. The wait isn't so long as to be agonizing, more of a mild annoyance.
When recording video at highest quality, the video stutters; I read this can be fixed by recording video to the phone memory instead of the memory card but not sure if that's true.
When attached to my computer in "mass storage" mode I could only put 2GB of music on it even though it has 8GB of memory. Maybe I just need to reformat the memory card, I dunno.
"I dunno" describes a lot of things, this phone has tons of features but you seem to be on your own when it comes to finding them. For example: If you hold down the Menu button for a second, it brings up the list of open applications. If that's in the manual someplace I didn't see it.
Doesn't look to your SIM card for contacts info by default, you have to tell it not to look only in the phone memory.
Volume goes from 0% to 100% in steps of 10%, would have preferred a little more refineme
- Other Thoughts: In terms of everything other than a web browser, this is as good as it gets on a cell phone.
The web browser works, but it's not as good as what's on an iPhone, and of course it's not a touch-screen device, so typing text on a web page from the number pad is cumbersome.
The screen looks really nice and bright and colorful.
Nokia's PC software is clunky and slow but then so is iTunes on a PC.
The headphones that come with the device, the cord is really short, it won't even reach from your pants pocket to your ear, and one of the ear buds didn't even fit in my ear (too big).

Great phone
- Pros: -Amazing OLED screen. Looks great and really brings out the colors.
-The phone looks sleek and slim and easy to handle. -The camera works great, and the dual LED flash is very bright. -I love the menu and all the buttons on the phone. Easy to use and use to the best of its ability. Great for multi-tasking. -FM transmitter worked great for me in Long island, but wasn't so great in Brooklyn because I couldn't find an empty station to use. I had a FM transmitter before I got this phone and its the same thing. The phone is much better though since it doesn't need any wires or cables. -GPS: I was able to get a cold start within a min or two when i stepped outside the house. -The Wifi signal is great. Works great without any problems. Still trying to figure out how to connect to my university's wifi using vpn since my school puts a login protection on its internet.
- Cons: I may have been spoiled since my last phone had amazing speaker quailty, but this phone doesn't sound as good when playing ringtones or music. Speakerphone is perfect and the phone is still pretty loud. Better than most phone I would say but if your looking for something that more than just above average you might want something else. The phone plays my ringtones just fine and I am happy with it.
The phone is a big fingerprint magnet, but nothing that really bothered me that bad.
- Other Thoughts: As everyone else has been sayng, the screen is hard to see in DIRECT sunlight. I find myself rarely in that situation and if I am, I just tilt it to some shade and i cans see everything perfect.
NO cracks on my phone yet. I was afraid of quality issues people talked about esp since its made in China. I havn't had any problems so far, the menu keys are not falling off or look like they are going to crack like people said. The sldie doesn't sratch my keypad so everything seems fine.
The keypad (number keys) are great to press but feel a bit close together and small. My old phone (n81) wasn't as nice to press but spaced out more. Its a matter of getting used to it since i am still able to text fine.
Avoid this phone and save yourself a big headache
- Pros: The camera (5 Megapixels)
- Cons: First phone got a death pixel on the screen, got i RMA by NewEgg
Second one navigations Key fall apart, It looks like it just needs some glue to fix the problem. I'd do it if I wouldn't pay almost $400 dll. This cheapy phone should cost $100.
Also, the battery life is very poor
- Other Thoughts: Call Nokia for a solution, refound, exchange or repair and they are just willing to repair it and I have to wait from 7 to 10 days.
One for NewEgg customer service, thaye RMA the first phone right away
almost the best phone
- Pros: Great Camera with bright camera flash and video light
Dedicated media and zoom buttons Bluetooth stereo headset compatible Included 8gb microSD card TV-out cable Good hand held size Customizable home screen and button layout Offline mode helps when traveling out of the country Large txt message inbox (over 1,000) Light sensor will light up the keys when needed Basic crop/edit pictures function Intelligent music library searches for music ANYWHERE on your phone or memory card Email client will allow multiple Gmail accounts
- Cons: I have had this for about a year. Wish I could rate it a 4.5 just because the processor is not the fastest (Ommnia II) and the camera could have been 8MP. Front camera not too good compared to the 5MP on the back. These may not be important to others.
- Other Thoughts: There is "listen" feature that will read your txt msgs to you, but its only available in a female Steven Hawkins British voice. This phone had tons of features that I rarely use. I bought this for the music, email, and camera functions. I got way more than I expected. GREAT job Nokia!
