4 out of 5 eggsKnow where this unit is coming from

Pros: Beautiful screen. Fast and responsive. Haven't dropped a call yet. Wifi is very fast. Runs Audible like a champ. And do we really need to talk about Angry Birds...

Cons: My wife is not as Tech savvy as I am. She would give it a 5, but I give it 4. I'm having trouble rooting it and installing 2.2. It keeps hanging at the recovery screen. Still working it. However, my wife hates that I keep wiping the memory every time I try it. Ver low internal memory. Need to load 2.2 so you can install apps to Micro SD card.

Other Thoughts: Understand where this Unlocked unit is coming from. Mine came from the Middle East. It has a Quaran and prayer alarm. I hear chanting in the middle of the night if our task killer doesn't catch it in time. You can't delete it, as it's a system app installed in the ROM. Another reason why it needs 2.2. other than that, love it!

2 out of 5 eggsHTC Desire Follow-up Review

Pros: When it works - it is a very nice phone with a beautiful display.

Cons: I have had this phone for over two weeks now and I will probably have to return it. Only after I bought it did I realize that HTC Desire's have a major flaw. MANY times when you are making a call, the screen will simply blank out and there is no easy way to get it to turn back on. Just Google "HTC Desire screen turns off during call" if you don't believe me. It looks like many Desires were shipped with a faulty proximity sensor - which turns off the LCD, and disables all buttons, when you place the phone near your ear.

Other Thoughts: The only way I have resolved this, and it has happened at least three times, is to pull of the back cover and pop the battery. And, for the record, I am not an Apple fan boy - but I have had ZERO, I say again ZERO problems with my *Phone 3GS. Caveat emptor on the HTC Desire.

4 out of 5 eggsOutstanding phone.

Pros: This is the most intuitive phone I've ever had. Gone are the days of arcane data porting rituals or WinMo stylus-driven eye squinting. I powered up the phone. It gave me a quick tutorial of the basics that took less than 1 minute. Next, it asked me to log in to my Google account. To my surprise, it also asked me if I wanted to log in to Twitter. I did. That's it. I was done.

In 2 minutes, my Gmail was downloaded, my contacts were all imported, and my Twitter feed was running in a nice client on a side desktop. I went to bed and was awakened by an alarm I had set weeks ago for an appointment on my Google Calendar, which I had totally forgotten to import! If you like Google services, this is the phone for you.

Integration of multiple Gmail accounts is so easy. It allowed me to configure my Google Apps account just as easily with my own Domain's dot com email running side by side with my Gmail account.

The hi-res video runs quite smoothly and without hiccups or choppiness

Cons: On the hardware: No front facing camera for those who need it. I had one on my last 3 Nokias and a SonyEricson but never used it, so I don't care.

Android won't let you reverse tether. If you are in a hotel that provides a connection and you'd like to update your phone through the laptop rather than pay for roaming, you are out of luck unless you root the phone. This is a BIG disappointment.

Android's location awareness enables customization but also Narcs on you when you use a site that charges more or denies service by region. If you travel overseas, this will make it doubly hard to keep the language of your choice. In Holland, Chrome keeps switching websites to Dutch no matter how I try to specify English. Opera Mini works better on that front but doesn't render as well.

There is no way to pause audio without unlocking the phone. Slightly annoying.

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent phone. I love it. I gave it a 4 only because some people really want that front facing camera and because it only comes with a 4 GB card. I hate having to toss my 16GBxD for this micro-SD. I also wish I could use the mini-USB but this one uses micro-USB. Now I have to waste money on cables when I have 4 or 5 already.

Also, beware IOS Fan reviewers who disparage Android. This phone runs rings around any IOS-based phone and DOESN'T DROP CALLS. In benchmarks Chrome was TWICE AS FAST. It looks nice, you can hold it however you like, and you DON'T NEED A RUBBER BAND AROUND IT. The Flash player doesn't hurt either. It has the smoothest and snappiest video I've ever seen on a phone.

The Android Market app is fantastic. Finding and installing apps is so easy, especially with the rating system and categories. I was impressed. All done without restricting users OR developers. I probably installed more apps in 3 days than the last 4 years on my previous smart phones

4 out of 5 eggsVery Nice Display with Some Negatives

Pros: I just picked up an unlocked HTC Desire from TKS here in Germany. I am very happy with the display - it is absolutely beautifu. Android (2.1 - I believe) runs fast and smoothly. The multiple home screens feature is also nice. Phone function is great - good sound and no reception problems so far. The "live" desktop background very nice - almost stunningly beautiful. Big plus - the battery is replaceable and it is not a fingerprint magnet. Last but not least - the wi-fi radio and antenna are excellent - I turned it on my my driveway and was shocked to see how many wireless networks there really are in my neighborhood.

Cons: Android is nowhere near as intuitive as iOS on my iPhone 3GS. Gmail is easy but Yahoo mail is a pain - I have not been able to setup Outlook on it (which is very easy on the 3GS). The back cover isn't cheap - but you may not want to remove it too many times. Forget about easy app buys like with the iPhone. I live in Germany - Skype is not available - big negative for me. Only after I bought mine did I discover that there is little in the line of fitted cases or accesories for it. That said - the king of protective cases - Otterbox - is promising a case "soon".

Other Thoughts: I read all of the reviews - here, Ama*on, Engadget, etc. I thought the Desire would be the neatest thing since sliced bread - but it is not. That is the problem with anyone (myself included!) being allowed to submit reviews - they may not have even ever handled the phone yet they sing its praises. I could return it within 30 days - but I won't. I can live with some gripes since the phone functionality and the browser are both good and the display is SOOO nice. It is not as solidly built as the HTC Legend or either the iPhone 3 or 4 - but the fit and finish are excellent.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: one of the best phone on the market. it is the only Android phone which comes with largest RAM.

Cons: no cons. now

Other Thoughts: People, there is no USA version, the 3G only work with T-mobile network. please, check, before you leave any suck feedback. the phone only has 1Ghz CPU version, but the Android system does not support 1Ghz CPU yet, so the CPU information you see is not correct.

5 out of 5 eggs850 MHz Available

Pros: I have the 850Mhz USA 3G Version - It is wonderful & Fast.
Don't think they sell it here, but you can find it online on google if you try.

Cons: With the 850Mhz version, there are no cons! The europec version sucks.

Other Thoughts: Buy the unit with 850Mhz AT&T 3G - It's totally worth it!

5 out of 5 eggsNot Neweggs Fault

Pros: People, would you stop rating it low because you didnt read the technical specs?

Cons: No where in the specs does it say this device supports 850mhz 3g....

Phone is great but know the limitations before you buy, it will not work on AT&T 3g.

2 out of 5 eggsSo So...

Pros: Sexy
Fast Wifi
good feel
Nice screen

Cons: No 3G only Edge due to lack of 850Mhz Band for At&t

Other Thoughts: This is the A8181 model and it lacks the 850Mhz Band for At&t support. Who ever bought these for Newegg should have done more research.

It appears that the A8183 model is fully compatible. International carriers like Roger (Canada) and Telstra (Australia)
