Disclaimer

Disclaimer
Please read the product description carefully for all unlocked cell phones.

Some unlocked cell phones sold by Newegg may have previously been locked to a specific carrier. A carrier-locked cell phone may often have carrier-specific applications and branding. Some of these applications cannot be unlocked and/or may not function with a different carrier. Also, applications requiring a data plan may result in data usage charges from the original carrier.

In addition, the cell phone box may arrive unsealed and the cell phone may appear previously handled. The unlocking procedure requires unsealing the box and manually handling the cell phone. In this case, the cell phone should not be considered "tampered with" or "defective".

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy

Pros: No data plan

Cons: Everything else

Other Thoughts: This was supposed to be a phone that looks like a smart phone, and has a few of the features, but doesn't require a data plan. It's a great idea, because who wants to be the guy stuck in 2005 with a flip phone when everyone else has something flashy and new?

Screen: The touchscreen is pretty responsive, except when the phone is doing more than one thing at a time, and pauses. It's kind of like when a program becomes non-responsive in Windows. You can't do anything until the phone figures itself out. The only way around it is to shut the phone down and restart. This is pretty frequent. I've had it happen while writing a text, and somebody texts me while I'm doing it. The phone can't process multiple things...at all. My wife had the same phone and had all of the same problems as I did, except hers was worse.

Texting: Also a huge problem. After I got the phone, I noticed that every once in a while I would get 2 or 3 of the same text. After some researching, I found that the person sending the message was only sending me one, but somehow the phone was receiving 2, 3, or even up to 5 of the exact same message. Not only that, my service provider was counting all of them against my plan. Not a big deal if you have unlimited texting, but I only had 200/month. I never went over, but still disconcerting.

I would frequently get a text from somebody that consisted of "<subject>". That was the entirety of the text message. I would have to ask the person to send another text asking what their original text was. This takes up at least 3 messages and is insanely annoying. Not cool when I only have a limited amount per month.

Call quality was pretty good. I didn't have an unusual amount of dropped calls or anything.

Since this is a touchscreen, you want the sensors to be able to turn the screen off when you lift it to your face, otherwise the person you're on the phone with gets to listen to a bunch of beeps. Well, the sensors on this phone work about 3/4 of the time. There were plenty of times when my call was cut off because my ear had dialed another person in the middle of the conversation. I had to end the call and ask what I missed during those few seconds.

All in all, this phone is a terrible piece of equipment. Do yourself a favor and either get a cheap flip phone that is mechanically sound, or spring for a good smart phone. This in-between stuff will frustrate you as it did me.

I had the phone for 2 years on AT&T, and switched to a galaxy SII on Straight Talk very recently. I had a 700 minute talk plan shared with my wife, she had 1000 texts, I had 200 texts, neither of us had data. I'm spending less than $5 per month extra now for unlimited talk and text, and 2GB of data. And the Straight Talk plan is actually using the AT&T towers. I couldn't be happier.

1 out of 5 eggsPretty bad

Pros: Small and lightweight, doesn't require a data plan, decent camera for a non-smartphone.

Cons: Crashes often, multiple times a day. Sometimes it restarts itself with an error message, other times it needs a battery pull. Since I've started using it, I've gotten a lot of reports of people who call me and get an unavailable message instead of my voicemail, even at times when the phone is on.

Other Thoughts: I've setup an RMA with HTC as I'm outside of Newegg's return policy, however many other reviews online show that my issues may be common place.
