1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Nothing about it is a pro.

Cons: I bought this phone for my wife. As soon as I got it, I purchased the year plan. only $80, what could go wrong. As soon as it was activated and she made her first call, we realized the ear speaker was busted, voices where crackling. It has been 2 weeks now and FreedomPop will not issue a refund, or an RMA to exchange. I am stuck with a broken phone and a 1 year payment that they will not refund.

Other Thoughts: I wish 0 was an option.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't bother

Pros: Service (if you stay below limits) is free
Calls can be made when you are connected via WiFi

Cons: 4G is WiMax, not LTE. The coverage maps are inaccurate--do not assume you will have 4G coverage just because the map of your area shows it.
Phone is well used, not just a refurb of a return.
Battery holds charge about 6-8 hours on standby. (See previous point--possible this would improve if you bought a new battery.)
Calls cannot realistically be made over 3G.
Vintage 2010 phone
Android 2.3

Other Thoughts: I picked this up cheap on Neweggflash, thinking "how can you go wrong with free cell phone service?" The short answer is: when your phone doesn't actually work as a cell phone.
Freedompop calls all go through data coverage--not normal cell coverage. Despite any claims that calls over 3G are possible, I was never able to make or receive a call over 3G that both people could hear each other.
This is an old phone that connects over Sprints old 4G WiMax service. Despite the coverage maps at both Freedomop and Sprint's web sites showing I had coverage, I was not able to connect via 4G anywhere in a roughly 20 mile range that I tried. When I finally (after 9 days) got someone at Freedompop support to respond for help as to why I could not connect on 4G, I was told that the maps were inaccurate and Sprint did not cover that area. I'm not entirely sure whether that was true or something else was wrong, but the other possibility is that Customer Support is atrocious. (It's also quite possible both are true.)
I don't want to say that you should avoid Freedompop. It's possible that with an LTE phone you could get a 4G connection that will allow you to consistently make and receive cell calls. But with the HTC Evo, you likely just plain can't. If you've already got a phone on the Sprint system that will work with their BYO approach, it might be worth a try. But I'd avoid spending money on a device with the expectation that you'll be getting free phone service.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks pretty good

Pros: The best thing of all it does everything that a smart phones should do and with 500 MB of data, 200 minutes and 200 text all for free every month for life. What is there not to love.

Cons: The phone sometimes lags when talking and other times it works fine while other times he sound like you're in a cave. Like I said it's not a top of the line phone so I didn't expect everything to be perfect. Now if I had paid $600 for this phone I would be very upset.

Other Thoughts: Phone work pretty good after the updates and reading a lot on the web site the phone is now working very well for what I wanted for. But don't expect the top of a line phone. I got this more as an emergency type phone since there was no monthly charges. In my area Sprint isn't all that great to begin with, no matter how expensive the phone is. So it actually may be a carrier problem and not the phones I don't know.

2 out of 5 eggsDidn't work for me

Pros: HTC Evo 4G is a fine phone with a good set of features if at least a generation old.

Cons: FreedomPop requires 4G service in order to provide decent voice quality on phone calls. But the EVO 4G uses WiMax 4G, a technology that is on its way out. If you have good 4G service in your area, FreedomPop could be a good choice but only if you select a phone with LTE 4G.

4 out of 5 eggsBattery life stinks

Pros: I needed some help from the customer service to activate the service. Past that, the service seems to be working fine

Cons: Battery life stinks:
- The battery drains out even without a minute of use within 12-15 hours

Other Thoughts: The unit was supposed to be a part time use handset for my parents who are visiting me in US. They will have low usage and signing a contract would be too expensive. The free service from freedom pop was a pleasant surprise. The unit is probably not the greatest one but still is not an expensive one

1 out of 5 eggsDo NOT Buy This Phone!

Pros: Beautiful screen. Slim but sturdy build. Feels solid in your hand.

Cons: Has only 512MB of internal memory. You cannot put many apps on this phone before you're out of internal memory. A lot of apps can't be installed on the SD card so this is an important negative against this phone. Speakerphone would either be on all the time or not at all during phone calls. Could never get it to work properly. Has very poor battery life. Back cover is difficult to remove and put back on. The cover is very thin and I was afraid on more than one occasion that it would break when removing it from the phone body.

Other Thoughts: Except for the really nice res. screen and it's overall feel in your hand, this phone is a definite Do Not Buy. I bought it because on the Overview page it says the phone has 4GB of internal memory. In fact, it has only 512MB of memory, a huge difference. That along with the other negatives of this phone make it one you should most definitely avoid.

3 out of 5 eggsFreedomPop HTC Evo4G

Pros: Its cheap, looks in good shape, some calls and texts do go through. Newegg shipping, etc, spot on. And I bought it on sale 2 weeks ago. 3 stars because it was "cheap", take off another half or more because it doesn't operate like a cell phone. And "NO" wifi does not provide a clear call even 15 ft from my router.

Cons: Very difficult to get a phone number for it. It kept looping me around to "choose a phone number" page, and then it would say "sorry no phone numbers in your area" and over again. Finally, there was deeply hidden thread in their forums to CHOOSE ANOTHER STATE!!! Huh?! Needless to say, I have no idea how to post in the forums, they don't tell you anywhere!!! And It won't really "update contacts", same person can call me and it says "unknown number" right above the last time they called me. And if I try and update contact, it starts a whole new one or sends me to a huge long list of every Gmail I have ever recieved!

Other Thoughts: If you need a cheap fone service and don't care if your contacts get all messed up, and don't expect to post a comment in the forums then go for it

1 out of 5 eggsScam, and poorly refurbished phone.

Pros: Low price.

Cons: Everything else. Batter is shot, will not last more than an hour of use. Also, FreedomPop is a scam. Research this company. When you call to activate they will tell you the free plan is "not available in your area." After telling them I would only sign up under the free plan, they lied and told me they signed me up for the free plan. I checked my account later and they had signed me up for a paid plan without my consent.
