Apple and Android Ports: What's the Difference?

USB-charged devices look for a USB pin signal before they accept a full-speed charge. Most devices use a standard USB pin signal; Apple devices and a few others, like the Galaxy tab, require specialized pin signals. Our Android and Apple ports are hard-wired to accommodate these two types of charging authentications. However, an Apple device can (usually) still charge from an Android port and vice versa, sometimes at a slower speed, but oddly, often also at full speed.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth every penny

Pros: With 5 charging ports, we set up a charging station for the family and any guests. No more searching for outlets or friends leaving chargers behind.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Should have bought one of these years ago!

2 out of 5 eggsNice Product

Pros: Nice form factor
amp differences for different equipment

Cons: Anker support.

Other Thoughts: They look great and work well when they work. Per Newegg.com I contacted the company when one I bought failed. They said told they don't support it and to contact Newegg (who says to contact Anker). So buyer beware - apparently the warranty isn't worth the paper its written on. At this point I would say they aren't worth the premium price. Just a like a cheap one, you have to throw it out because no one stands up for the warranty.

4 out of 5 eggsReflections

Pros: Great build quality. No wall wart so easy to accommodate in power strips. Different amperage ports (and labeled on back) so you don't blow any batteries. 100-240v so you can use it world wide.

Cons: Bought 2. One of them started emitting a high pitch and then clicking when disconnected from power. Sounds like a bad capacitor. Started the RMA. .We'll see how it goes.

Other Thoughts: I have other Anker products and they've lasted really well. I've been impressed by the quality of their products and was surprised to have one of the two I bought go bad after a couple of weeks usage. It happens to everyone though. We'll see how the RMA process goes. So far I still recommend them.

1 out of 5 eggsUnit Arrived DOA

Pros: Concept is good. Unit is small, which would be good for a travel accessory.

Cons: Unit arrived DOA, and Anker only honors warranty if you buy it directly from them.

Pros: Charged and iPad and iPhone at the same time. And quickly!!

Cons: Gets a little warm, but I guess this is normal.

Other Thoughts: Totally worth it if you have to charge multiple devices.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat device, for a particular thing

Pros: solid build quality

Cons: very particular, not universal.

Other Thoughts: First the charger works great and does exactly what it states it does.

If you don't properly understand what each port allows in amperage you might think it's misleading when you plug the wrong device in the wrong port. The ports are labeled as for specific devices which they are not and are only indicative of the amps they put out. The instructions and back of the device clearly label what each port will do for you in terms of amps they will put out. The ports go as such

iPad 2.1 Amps - This is the highest output.
Samsung Tab 1.3 Amps - This is the second highest output.
iPad 2.1 Amps - Again the highest output.
iPhone 1 Amp - Lowest but common for most phones.
Android 1 AMP - Same as iPhone

It is important to understand what your device requires, for instance my note 2 can charge at 2 amps so the iPad port at 2.1 Amps is perfect. Because of how Amps work I do not need to worry about putting too much into my phone. When my phone request 2 Amps that is exactly what it gets, now if I plugged it into say the Android port at 1 Amp that is all I would get. Charging time would also be doubled since I am only giving my phone half of what it can use.

Also with this charger being rated at only 5 Amps max you can not plug into all 5 ports unless you are using devices all at 1 Amp. 2 iPads would put you at 4.2 so anything else would bring it over 5 Amps. If you used 1 iPad or device pulling over 2 Amps you could get 3 to 4 ports depending on Amps required.

stole from "rain forest" review because it was that well written, I personally bought this on "rain forest" and ended up choosing the anker AK-71AN7105-B5A for more flexibility in amperage.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Family Charger

Pros: Compact, convenient, works well

Cons: None significant

Other Thoughts: Bought two of these last year for family trips and they have worked without issue; family full of electronics (iPhones, iPads (reg & mini), Nintendo 3DS, etc.) and all charged without problems. Never noticed any heat issues. Was it fast? That wasn't the driving force behind purchase; I just needed something to charge multiple devices, typically overnight, and this did the job.
