3 out of 5 eggsFantastic, except for one glaring security problem

Pros: Works like any other router except for the 3G settings, which were automatic. It's small, light, battery is EXCELLENT when used in context of a laptop thats also battery powered. No external antenna to break off when used portably. I dont want long range, if I did, Id put a DD-WRT-ed router in the system, so an internal antenna is actually a benefit - also it wont broadcast a signal as far down the street as a device with an external antenna, which adds a couple dB gain.

I had to download firmware for my 3G device but the process was easy.

This 4506 is basically plug and play, unless you want to set security features.

Cons: 1. Zoom has made a SERIOUS security hole in this firmware. The Status page (the HTML page the router displays when the computer accesses it via wireless or ethernet) DISPLAYS THE SSID.

What the (expletive deleted) is the point in a security option for "do not broadcast SSID" when the Status page, that ANYONE can access if they know, or can find, the IP, gives it away? All a hacker needs is an IP address scanner that anyone can download, then go to the router and SEE the SSID, that is two out of three (or two out of two if you havent set a router password) to getting access to your computer.

***The field for SSID on the Routers Status page should be blanked out when 'do not broadcast' is selected.****

Newbies- a routers SSID is sort of like the number on your house. A burglar (hacker or bored neighbor) has a more difficult time finding your house without a house number on the mailbox, then needs a key (password) to get in (or a brick...)

A hackers job is much easier if the SSID is broadcasted. If it isnt, it has to be found and there are millions of combinations. Making it easy for a hacker is NOT security.

2. LAN cable defective. Plugged in, wouldnt see the router.
Fortunately I had another one that was quality.

Other Thoughts: Dont buy it (until they fix the firmware) if you need/want the 'do not broadcast SSID' function. If you are setting up a network to play on the internet, then fine, but especially if you need security such as running a business (on line or not), have personal data on the computer (take it off immediately) etc, then you want security settings, and **this router is NOT the one for security until Zoom fixes this giant security hole.**

There's a way around this problem, but Im SURE not going to post it, its one of my tricks after 30 years in computers and it does not help my security if I give tricks away...

As to Newegg, their SERVICE ABSOLUTELY, POSTIVELY ROCKS !!!!! Except for the merchandise being shipped to KY (thanks, UPS) and back, which raises the possibliity of ESD to the merchandise, service was great. But, thats why we buy from the Big Boys like Newegg and TD, right? (Ill be nice and not spell out the name of Neweggs competitor)

Seriously, it's very risky to ship static sensitive devices to KY and back on an airplane, which is a giant, flying mega-volt static electricity generator, plus it wastes time and fuel. Ive seen entire, packaged, encased electronic devices destroyed from shipping when not being packed in ESD proof containers ( I iused to be a Tech in consumer electronic repair for Sears) and this router is not in static safe packaging.

That the device itself is in an ESD bag is NOT sufficient, they can only withstand fairly low ESD voltages.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Works great with my VZW Moto Droid Bionic smart phone. The Zoom Tech helped with necessary upgrades to the VZW Android "Zoom Tether" app and the droid. Once setup the modem/phone combo has operated flawlessly for months.

Cons: At first I had a problem with the phone discharging, but then discovered is was the cable from Zoom to phone that was bad. This was not really a Zoom problem, but easily fixed once the Tech said the modem 'should' keep the phone charged.

Other Thoughts: VZW 'hotspot' subscription not needed. Of course a phone data plan is, and with 4g speeds you can use up bytes fast. Because I travel in an RV, I restrict the phone to 3g so it does not go in and out of service as frequently. The Zoom Travel Router is definitely on my recommended list. If you are in doubt I suggest calling Zoom Tech and ask if it will work with your configuration.

5 out of 5 eggsFirmware updates enables 4G/LTE support on the 4506

Pros: I've been working this router almost everyday of the year and its still going strong.
With firmware update; Version 1.0.13-1, it can now support several 4G modems. Now just like my Cradlepoint CTR500, both can accommodate 3G/4G modems with ease.

Cons: Still an ugly router but I won't complain because it hasn't let me down in terms of performance since the day I got it. Firmware updates has only serve to make this one a 'gem.' It gets better with each update.

Other Thoughts: Reliable & the big plus for me, is that it can run on battery for more than 2.5 hours with modem and approximately 6 hours with ethernet cable input. I've now changed the colour on my unit from black to 'digicamo.' You can't go wrong when you decide to purchase this router for home or for use on the go.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with RAZR V3xx!

Pros: Wow. I plugged it into my Moto RAZR V3xx, and it WORKS! I also tried it with an AT&T Option USB modem, works fine, too. So far, I really like this unit, only been using it for a couple days. Web interface is simple, didn't need to enter any ln/pw info for the cellular connection to work.

Cons: No external antennas, but this thing is meant for close range, so no big deal.

Other Thoughts: I was really surprised that this thing worked with my old razr. The $10/mo unlimited data plan plus this thing = woohoo! Next, I'll test it with an even older RAZR V3!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Works both with my phone and my Verizon UML290.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Great, great tech support. Couldn't get the UML290 to work, so I called tech support, and 15 min later I had all the information I needed to upgrade the firmware and configure the modem so that it would works.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid and stable

Pros: It just works.

Cons: None that I have found.

Other Thoughts: I updated the firmware right out of the box. (easy process)
Plugged in my 3G modem and answered a few questions during setup. It's been working perfectly ever since.
I use this in my car in order to provide wi-fi to my tablet. It works perfectly and the battery means I do not have to wait for the machine to boot or reconnect if I go see a customer. When I come back the wifi is still up and operational.
Also kinda cool to slip the router in your bag and bring your own internet access into the restaurant. :)

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very Nice Router......especially with it having a battery! Very Easy setup and it worked right outta the box. I have about 8 different brand routers and this one is in my top 3. This is the 2nd ZOOM branded router I own and I personally have been very very pleased with their products.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Very nice travel router

5 out of 5 eggsThe current champ of mobile 3G routers

Pros: There is so much that this router has to offer;
It claims to handle over 200 wi-fi connections which easily beats my Cradlepoint CTR500's 32 max connection capability!
It has an ethernet port that can serve as in/output
Wireless-N* with B/G as well,
Fast throughputs of data, even beating several home routers,
Built-in battery, wonderful feature which can last long as 2 (using usb modems) to 5 hours (using ethernet cable),
LED indicators on the front and on/off switch at the back.
This router covers more USB modems than any other router on the market... it even works with modems not on Zoom's compatibility list. eg - Huawei E1756 not on the list but it works well with this router. Cradlepoint routers are good but doesn't support half the modems that the Zoom 4506 can handle.
You can carry this thing in your shirt pocket.
Runs cool, no other router operates as cool as this unit does. The vents on top and at the front underside does an excellent job at keeping this unit from over

Cons: * Wireless N max out at 150 Mbps, not a true Wireless N router which would typically give you 300 - 450 Mbps max,
UGLY, UGLY, UGLY! This is not a cute router but its performance makes up for its lack of good looks (lol)
Firmware is somewhat stable now with recent 1.0.10 upgrade, previously unstable,
Doesn't support 4G modems but its a '3G router' after all.

Other Thoughts: Ssssshhh... I am letting the beans out of the bag, this router was manufactured by company named AMIT Inc (Advance Multimedia Internet Technology) based in Taiwan (so you know that this is good stuff) although this model is made in China. AMIT makes routers for a few other companies including Trendnet & Aluratek. The difference lies in the 'software' or the router's 'OS' (firmware) which is usually developed by company offering the final product. Recommended 100%!
