Great Rhythm Game
This review is from: DJ Hero w/turntable Wii Game Activision
Pros: This game has an amazing soundtrack from tons of well-known DJs (my favorite being Daft Punk) and features dozens of incredible mash-ups and remixes. I personally love hearing songs I know mixed with songs I don't. Though I'll often hear mixes consisting only of songs which I've never heard before, and it's still very interesting and entertaining. Honestly, I think the quality of a given mix depends more on the DJ who put it together than the songs it's made up of. In terms of gameplay, this game has done a terrific job of simplifying (but not too much) the mechanisms of a DJ turntable. The DJ controller is very responsive, but not quite perfect (see below). The process for unlocking new characters, venues, etc is quite enjoyable and is very rewarding (the stuff you start out with is pretty bad).
Cons: It's not hard to get used to using the crossfader, but it is often difficult to hit the "center" position spot-on, making some bits of crossfading difficult, especially when it comes to bumps (moving the crossfader to one side and then back to center in a ridiculously short time frame). I wish the crossfader would spring back to the center position like on many real turntables. Also, the Wii version of this game looks noticeably less pretty than its Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts. I have to admit that there are a couple of set lists that are horrible, but that's just my opinion, so I won't say anything more about it. The library of online downloadable tracks is rather pitiful at this point, but I expect that to change with time. It's a very minor annoyance, but it's rather difficult to pry the Wii Remote from the DJ controller (yes, I'm pressing the buttons on either side of the connector).
Other Thoughts: Make sure you have decent speakers with which to play this game. Keep in mind that one can unlock everything in this game without ever venturing into the higher difficulty modes of gameplay. I was able to unlock everything by playing solely "Medium," without ever venturing into "Hard" and "Expert." I am a veteran of rhythm games (DDR, StepMania, SpinItUp, Beatmania, and Guitar Hero) and DJ Hero definitely has impressed me and gets my seal of approval.
