Excellent tennis game
- Pros: This is an incredibly fun tennis game. The mix of current and former great tennis players is nice. I do think the absence of Jimmy Connors and Billy Jean King is weird, but I suppose there were issues getting those player's permission to be included. A real shame. I'd love to play some Connors vs McEnroe matches. Anyhow, the action and realism of play in this game is superb. I have and use the Wii Motion Plus adapter and can't imagine not doing so. While the Wii motion plus can get a little wonky at times, simply holding it level and still for 2 seconds resets it and clears up any issue. I love that I'm playing a video game an burning calories while doing so. I played a match yesterday that lasted 35 minutes and I burned 69 calories (according to the software). It's not going to the gym, but it beats being static in a chair. In 2 1/2 days playing between 1 and 3 hours each day, I've burned a little over 600 calories. That's like icing on the cake, the cake being the great game play.
- Cons: The "Party Game" matches during Grand Slam mode are kind of lame and while they can be an interesting diversion, I'd rather see them made into a separate mode of their own and not attached to the tournaments. Also, the lack of lower tier tournaments is a shame. I more fleshed out career mode would make this game near-perfect. I think you should have to play through tournaments like the Leg Mason Classic in Washington, DC (among others) before graduating up to the "big show" (one of the grand slam tournies). Just my opinion though.
- Other Thoughts: I noticed another reviewer had mentioned that you don't control where your player moves on the court, but this is partially false. If you use only the Wii Remote, then yes, the console determines where your player runs on the court. However, if you use both the Wii remote AND the nunchuk controller together, then you use the joystick on the nunchuk to control exactly where your player moves on the court. This is in fact, the best way to play this game.
I'd like a few more exhibition matches vs lower ranked opponents (in Grand Slam mode) before starting the tournament outright. One exhibition match vs a lower ranked player, the "party game" match and then the "Legend Challenge" before launching into the Round of 32 is a bit rushing it in my mind. I'd gladly give up the "Party Game" match to play in another exhibition match vs a low-mid ranked player.
Good Game
- Pros: The Wii is pretty much ideal for racket, bat, and club sports games. This game is fun to play and the ability to "mold" your shots with spin, angle, and depth (from drop to lob) with your hand and wrist motion similar to how you would do so in a real tennis game is very cool. You can set up where your player starts a volley, but...
- Cons: ...the avatar still runs on it's own, you don't have too much control of where she/he runs, or how fast. Perhaps this will improve once my skills are built in the game?
I don't have one, but one of the new Wii motion enhancer things would work great with this, seems like it should at least.
- Other Thoughts: I hope Nintendo continues to develop and improve their games. This is a great big step over the fun but silly Wii Sports game.
Good game
- Pros: Motions and actions are pretty realistic. I find myself lunging after balls and really making an effort to hold the "racket" correctly. Probably even better with the new Wii motion enhancer plug in things
- Cons: I don't have the Wii motion enhancer plug in things
- Other Thoughts: Wii is really ideal for these sports type games, hopefully Nintendo keeps working on improving this product.
