hmm
- Pros: It's a Tenchu game! And you have a Wii?
They tried something different. You can actually hide in "shadows" now. I say it that way because light and shadow is implemented in a rudimentary (basic and gamey) kind of way.
Stealth kill gestures are kind of cool I guess.
Crossing swords with the enemy is ridiculously difficult. Luckily, such fighting is rare and you can set the difficulty to 'easy' to make it less of a nuisance. Don't worry, it seems that is the only thing difficulty setting changes. AI and everything else remains the same. Different difficulty only means easier or harder sword fighting.
It's only $15 dollars here. If you are even a little interested in the game you haven't much to lose. And really, there aren't many good Wii games imo so you may as well give it a try.
- Cons: DIGITAL CONTROLS. I thought this was 2009! If you played Tenchu series (any game really) on the PSX you might feel right at home. Honestly, I'd like to think we moved passed that. I find it hard to believe I ever played games that way. This game should have been made with analog movement. I cannot stress this as a con enough. It makes it very difficult for me to get into the game, and so I have not played much more than several missions.
Awfully linear levels.
I find the camera angle/player view to be obnoxious. I never cared for the third person 'at the side' view that we see so much nowadays.
There are some annoying 'instant lose' situations. For example, if you happen to approach a hiding ninja you are auto loser. You have to kill them without getting close to them.
YOU CANNOT GHOST a mission. You can try, but you can't get a good rank that way. The game awards points by kills. I snuck my way to the target and eliminated him. Received bad score for not killing other
- Other Thoughts: If you are unaware. Ghosting is a fun and challenging way to play stealth based games. THe idea is that you sneak your way through the game, only killing if you absolutely need to. It is a shame that this game penalizes you for this behavior.
In older titles of the series not being spotted resulted in such a high bonus score as to ensure the highest rating. Even if you don't kill everybody. Not so in this title. Bummer.
You may have heard that this is almost like a puzzle game. It actually does feel that way. The game presents you with a 'problem', you 'solve it' and move to the next one. The levels are split up into different 'problems' if you will. I don't much care for this. I'd rather the level be one large area that I can find my own way through. Instead of the game presenting individual challenges.
As much as I hate this game I would say it IS worth a try. Please rent if you can before purchase.
I've not played even half the game. Take what I say with this in mind.
One of the Wii's best "hardcore" games.
- Pros: - A great-looking game, perhaps the most attractive in the series.
- A beautiful soundtrack from series veteran Noriyuki Asakura. - Motion controls, once learned, are generally responsive and work fairly well. On-screen prompts can be toggled on or off, so you'll never be confused about how to pull of a certain move. - 50 unlockable (based on in-game performance), optional assignments add depth.
- Cons: - Has a steep learning curve. Prepare to restart sections over and over until you get them right.
- The highly detailed and well-designed levels are reused a few times throughout the storyline (and in the unlockable assignments), with different paths and enemy layouts. - Uneven quality of voice acting (par for the course for this series). - The handful of enemy voice clips repeat ad nauseam, especially when you are spotted and your foes go into "alert mode". - Combat, though best avoided in favor of stealth (this is a ninja game, after all), can be very frustrating and unforgiving. Boss battles are a real challenge. - A few rough an unconvincing animations stand out among the others.
- Other Thoughts: Long-time fans know the Tenchu games (best described as a "ninja simulator") have been in a steady decline of quality since Wrath of Heaven. Shadow Assassins is a series reboot of sorts, slowing things down to refocus more strongly on stealth.
There are many changes. The camera is anchored behind the player and over the shoulder, a la RE4. The grappling hook is gone, though you can, climb to higher ground. The gear line-up has been trimmed (plus a few new additions) and your carrying capacity is limited to three item type slots. You'll have a sword only if you can find one, and your blade will quickly break if not handled properly. Battle (which consists of two alternating stages: blocking, by turning the Wiimote to block strikes at the proper angle and attacking, by swinging the Wiimote to strike) is quite difficult, and best avoided.
But despite the radical changes, T:SA is pure Tenchu in feel and gameplay. This is a must-buy for fans of the series or stealth in genera
Definietly worth it
- Pros: Haven't officially played it but I know what the Tenchu series is. Considering it's actually on wii and a brand new game for $14.99 makes it a good deal in itself if you are a tenchu fan.
The other day went to EB and this game brand new was $49.99 so if you like tenchu, even if you'll play it in a year or two, $14.99 is as low as it's going to get for a brand new game.
- Cons: Haven't officially played it but it obviously looks like graphics would not be as good as the PS2 or Xbox Tenchu games and if Tenchu becomes available on PS3. Plus controls may be not too great when fighting in game.
- Other Thoughts: Despite cons, if you are a tenchu fan, how could you go wrong with $14.99 for a brand new game?
