Flawless fun!
- Pros: This is just good ol fun! There are 5 old school games each with their own sets of challenges to play through, to help you along the way you have magazines and cheats, making this a fun experience for anyone. The games aren't too difficult but once you beat all of the challenges you can go back through "free-play" and play through the games even further. The games include shooting, racing, Role Playing, puzzle, and action.
- Cons: None, even though it is a niche title, everyone can enjoy this!
- Other Thoughts: If enough people purchase this game then the sequel which is just about to be released in Japan should come out here as well, an it includes even more games!
Back to the Future
- Pros: -Authentic 8-bit experience - While the games are all new, it does feel like you're playing "lost" games from that era, right down to the bonus items, control schemes, and mistranslated exclamations.
-Thoughtful presentation - Small touches such as detailed in-game magazines and instruction manuals, inside jokes and references to video game culture, make this a must-have for anyone who live through and enjoyed that period in gaming. -Free Play - Though initially you are required to complete several challenges (missions) per game to advance, once they're complete you can play each game without restriction.
- Cons: -The less experience you have with 1980's video games and the geek culture surrounding it, the less appealing this game will be. Still fun if you enjoy old school/pick up and play type games.
-Some lack of variety in the games (multiple in-game "sequels"). -If graphics are your thing, this game is not.
- Other Thoughts: Retro Game Challenge is a loving trip back to the age of space shooters, overhead racing games, and 2D ninja platforming action. Based on a Japanese TV series about video games, it's one of those rare niche games that make it overseas from Japan. Though references to the show are eliminated, the humor and tributes to the era are thankfully intact. Game Master Arino transports you back to different periods of the 1980's, and your only chance of returning is completing his challenges in a number of old-school inspired games created specifically for this title. You'll play parodies/tributes of classics such as Galaga, Ninja Gaiden, and Dragon Quest on your way to freedom, with Arino's child counterpart rooting you on and breaking things up between missions with game magazines and random conversation. Amazing fun and nostalgia if that's what you're looking for.
