For decades, Samus Aran has been known as one of the first female protagonists in video games, and one of the most enigmatic. Having traded her haunted past for the solitary life of a bounty hunter, Samus™ finally tells her own tale in this revealing, personal story of her failings, her flaws and ultimately her motivation. Metroid: Other M is an unprecedented collaboration that blends the slick, action-packed production of the world-renowned Team Ninja development team with the game design talents of the creators of the original Metroid. Metroid: Other M is a dramatic new direction for a legendary franchise and a bold new blend between cinematics, storytelling and the best in interactive entertainment.

Features

Metroid: Other M takes the best elements of 1st-person and 3rd-person gaming to create a seamless blend between gameplay, story-telling and dynamic cinematography, that feels like a movie the player can control.Players hold the Wii Remote controller sideways while navigating and battling in 3rd-person. However, at any moment, players can switch immediately to Wii Remote pointer controls to examine and explore the environments in 1st-person perspective.

Metroid fans know more about Samus’ suits and weapons than they do about what drives her. That’s about to change. The story begins immediately following the events of Super Metroid, when a baby Metroid gave its life to protect Samus. With voice acting and a rich story, players learn the engaging backstory of Samus as she weaves through an action-packed adventure aboard the Bottle Ship, a decommissioned space facility. As she hurtles into this new adventure, Samus will encounter her first mentor and Commanding Officer of the Galactic Federation, Adam Malkovich.

The development of Metroid: Other M is an exciting collaboration between Nintendo’s Yoshio Sakamoto and Team Ninja. Sakamoto was the director of Super Metroid in 1994. Team Ninja is the renowned action developer of Ninja Gaiden.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Metroid Game

Pros: Great Metroid game. Nintendo did an awesome job continuing the Metroid story on the Wii. Good use of the Wii interface.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Other reviews mentioning hours of watching videos is an exaggeration.

I found that the videos enhanced the story line, were entertaining and by no means excessive.

5 out of 5 eggsBought it as a gift for a kid.

Pros: If you know someone who love Metriod and has never played this. Its a great game, it has two camera modes so you can swap between them depending on that your doing. One is first person the other is a side scroller like Megaman. I was worried my gift would go unliked. But he loves the game!

Cons: None, it was packaged perfect and got here on time. Its a brandnew never opened game.

Other Thoughts: Got it on sale on black friday :)

4 out of 5 eggsMetroid: Other M (Second Take)

Pros: Cinematic cutscenes, story, gameplay, dialogue, character models, combat... are all great. The more I play, the more I enjoy. So far the only ultra long cutscene I have seen is the introduction which kinda gives an illusion that the others are long, but they really aren't. Some parts of the game have an eerie sense of isolation (in music and sound) which is the true metroid experience. Silky smooth framerates. Very fast paced action. Switching views can actually be fun, especially during an intense boss battle. Eventually you won't even notice not being able to walk or run in first person... it won't matter.

Cons: The environmental graphics and locations aren't quite as pretty as Retro's Primes, but the characters and creatures are truly an improvement. Occasionally you may have to get help...For example, you will have to back track at certain parts, but you won't know when. (kinda reminds me of the original NES). Gun controls are on autopilot a lot... but that can be a GOOD thing. Some people won't like switching between 3rd and 1st person views, but to me it makes a unique and challenging experience. The Infamous Bug: There is a bug in the game that can ultimately end your game and make you start completely over. This is caused by back tracking at the wrong place in the game. I'm knocking off 1 egg for this reason alone. Probably 95% of people won't get the bug, if they follow the natural progression of the game. Read more about it on IGN.

Other Thoughts: In my last review I was only an hour into the game, now I'm more than half way through. I should have beaten it by now, but I have not been home much in the last month. For those who gave it a bad review, I don't believe they played it long enough. The deeper the game gets the more fascinating it becomes. If you are a Metroid fan, give it a go. Don't let the game killer bug prevent you from getting Metroid: Other M. It is truly a great game.

5 out of 5 eggsDon't believe the negative hype, this is an awesome Metroid game

Pros: The tight controls for this game do total justice to the Metroid 2D games, and I see the remote/d-pad only scheme as a gutsy move to preserve the quick on/off precision lost with analog. There's a lot of talk about this game being compromised due to lack of nunchuk control scheme, but that's non-sense IMO... The crispness works well with the action.

The switching to 1st person is tricky early on, but a little ways in, it really gets rocking and I wish more games adopted it. Overall, the controls are pretty bold; it's like Metroid Prime and Super Metroid had a baby, best of both worlds.

In many ways they streamlined the Metroid experience, and I found myself doing a lot less required backtracking than any previous 2D/Prime games so the pacing was better overall. However, there is still tons of secrets scattered throughout the map, so item hunting is just more optional than usual.

I actually enjoyed the cinematics and thought they were well done for Nintendo's first swing at it.

Cons: I can see some players somewhat turned off by the story telling and portrayal of Samus as a character, however despite what some others reviewers have said, the cutscenes are always brief and never get in the way of the action.

Not surprisingly, it's a pretty similar to the amount of time spent on story telling in Metroid Fusion, so that's a good metric to determine if it will bother you. Anyone that's compared the cinematics to Metal Gear Solid 2 in terms of frequency and longevity has a bad memory, but it is more required flare and flash than the optionally text heavy Prime games.

Other Thoughts: Aside from never finishing Metroid II for GB, I've completed every other Metroid game, many of them 2-3 times through so I can speak with some authority on the subject... I almost didn't get this after reading some particularly negative reviews, but I'm glad I decided to take a chance. After completing this game (though not 100% yet) I'm extremely surprised by the harshness of many of the reviews of this game. It's a little different take on Metroid, but a blast to play... the action and atmosphere are incredible... It's loaded with secrets, and still very much Metroid at heart.

I think Nintendo and Team Ninja took some chances here, particularly with the control scheme and the un-Nintendo like take on cinematics, and believe they deserve some credit for not rubber stamping this one. If you want the old games, play them. They're pushing the medium forward by combining some old and new ideas and as a game mechanics enthusiast first, I really enjoyed what they did with Other M.

5 out of 5 eggsgood so far

Pros: good so far a couple hours in reminds me of metroid fusion and throw some prime in and bam other m is here... i didnt like the fps in prime for the wii but for GC it worked out ok this is a little better but yes a little slow but overall awesome game!

Cons: clunky fps and graphics shouls be at least 720p come on nintendo the other systems are gonna kill you if you dont pull your heads out of your rear..

Other Thoughts: im a huge fan of all the other ones this is a good one to get even just to start out but i suggest starting at metroid 1 or zero mission and going up from there :)

4 out of 5 eggsMetroid: Other M

Pros: Atmosphere (during game play), story and cutscenes are the best things about Metroid - Other M. The eerie sounds of isolation take me back to the first two Metroids. I really enjoy the lengthy cutscenes; they are very well done. I also like running around in 3rd person view. The character models are excellent.

Cons: Controls are tricky at first and go against the natural flow that Rare got us use to in the Prime titles. It's either too simple, or slightly complicated. Metroid Other M really needs to be on an HD system. Don't get me wrong, it is very pretty... but I'm getting tired of the 480P blurry resolution from the Wii. Some of the nostalgic sounds we Metroid fans love to hear are not in the game. But there are a few.

Other Thoughts: I am only an hour into the game and so far I like it. Although there is an explanation for it during a cutscene, the upgrade system is a little weak. Switching between first and third person view is no big deal to me, something to get used to. If you are a Metroid fan and want to learn more about the story of Samus... definitely get this game... very balanced for both male and female audiences.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a Metroid game

Pros: The CGI is nice

Cons: Too much CGI

Other Thoughts: This game is NOT a Metroid game. You spend hours watching a movie, and it feels like thats all there is too it. It's a shame that Nintendo would allow a game series as Epic as Metroid be ruined like this. There is no sense of exploration, Samus sounds like a whiny brat, and it's just plain boring. I am extremely dissapointed.

4 out of 5 eggsSimple and fun

Pros: Similar enough feel to Super Metroid, which it follows, plot-wise. Cool levels, and atmospherics that capture the feel perfectly. The challenge level scales well, and there are enough save points scattered about to make it easy to quit without losing a lot of time; a good choice for casual gaming. I also like how they changed the missile/super missile/power bomb scheme to a recharging format.

And, of course, Samus is still hot.

Cons: The control are...annoying. The Horizontal-to-Vertical transition to go into 1st person is a lot slower than I would have hoped; it's a problem in certain fights. It would have been nice if they had support for the classic controller.

My real beef is that the plot is weak and the characters are bland. Some stuff is really, really cheesy; we're talking like cringe-worthy here. Not that there was ever a lot of plot in the old-school Metroids, mind you, but this one makes you sit through it.

Lastly, there are certain situations which aren't especially intuitive, and tend to require lots of trial and error, or lots and lots of 1st person searching to finally get past. These were mostly minor things, but it's still annoying when you spend 20 min searching a room for a tiny crack that you can only see in 1st person, and only when you're right next to it.

Other Thoughts: I borrowed this from a friend after he finished it (he bought it from Newegg, lol). It was kind of cheesy and frustrating at first, but it grew on me. The controls, in particular, took some time to get up to speed.
