Animal Crossing 3DS Nintendo 3DS Game Nintendo

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, you're the mayor of your own town. It's a lot of fun — and responsibility. But with a little help from Isabelle and support from all the friendly townsfolk, you'll feel right at home in your new job.

Welcome to your new home. Your new neighbors are waiting to greet their mayor!

Isabelle

As the mayor's secretary, she has lots of helpful advice and tips on making the most of your new home.

Lloid

Once you've had your house built and earned the approval of the citizens in your town, you'll be able to visit the Town Hall and order a public works project. Then it's just a matter of funding – once you, your friends, and your residents have donated enough Bells (the local currency) to Lloid, construction will begin.

Passing ordinances

"Ordinance" is just a fancy word for law. And as mayor, you get to enact them. Choose from one of these four different ordinances:

Keep Your Town Beautiful

Choose this ordinance to stop your flowers from wilting, prevent trash from appearing, and keep those pesky weeds at bay.

Early Bird

If you like to play Animal Crossing: New Leaf in the morning, set this ordinance to make all of the shops open earlier and have your citizens wake up at dawn.

Night Owl

The reverse of the Early Bird ordinance, this allows you to continue shopping long into the night and stay up watching the stars with all your new friends.

Bell Boom

Set this ordinance to increase the amount you'll get for recycling items and the number of medals you can win on the island.

(Tip: Watch out — this law will also increase the cost of new items.)

Tip: While Animal Crossing: New Leaf supports up to four people living in a town on a single Game Card, only the first person to move in gets to be the mayor. However, other players can always become mayor of a new town by transferring their save data to a new copy of the game.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic title with countless customization options!

Pros: I've gotten pretty far into developing my town and I've pretty much gotten the feel of how this game compares to the old games in the series.

Here are the new things that you can do in this game compared to previous entries:
~ You are mayor rather than just a citizen
~ You can build things called "Public Work Projects" anywhere within the town (things like a water fountain, a lighthouse, a café, etc.)
~ You can assign town "Ordinances" that villagers must follow. These basically make it so that the town is an early bird town (early opening of stores, etc.), a night owl town (villagers come out late at night and stores close late), and a beautiful town ordinance (villagers plant more flowers and tend to weeds more).
~ You can now customize you home's exterior (such as roof color, door design, fencing, etc.)
~ You can use the 3DS' camera to scan QR codes for custom-made designs (easy sharing of designs for clothes, pathways, etc.).
~ There is now an island that you can visit to play multiplayer minigames with strangers online or friends offline. There is also an abundance of bugs and fish to catch on this island.
~ You can now swim in the game. This allows you to catch underwater creatures like sea urchins.

There are quite a few other changes that are small such as new clothing designs, new Nintendo items, etc.

Cons: In general, this game takes a while to gain momentum. You start out in a tent in the game and must collect items to sell in-game if you ever desire to upgrade your home and eventually many other things in your town.

This game is definitely NOT for those who have no patience or for those who cannot sit still for 30 minutes to 1 hour a day to develop your virtual community in the game. This is not one of those super fast-paced, gory titles that take no brain to play.

Other Thoughts: If you have enjoyed any of the animal crossing titles in the series, you will definitely enjoy this new entry in the series.

2 out of 5 eggsFor casual players

Pros: Easy to pick-up, improved upon the previous title in the series.

Cons: Slow paced, to accomplish anything actually takes real life days, weeks, months. A type of game where you need to check in daily and do some stuff, then check in again tomorrow, etc.

Super casual, and somewhat childish with zero competitiveness. If you're a competitive or hardcore gamer I'd say this is one worth passing on.

Other Thoughts: Nothing inherently wrong with the graphics or gameplay, just may not be for everyone.

Pros: Easy to get into, lots to do and collect, unique experience for everyone.

Cons: It's most enjoyable in short bursts each day, but I want to play it for extended durations.
