The small, energy rich nation of Principality of Gallia is located in a fictional Europe in the 1930's and lies between two larger, warring nations. Eager to seize the energy resources of its smaller neighbor, the East European Imperial Alliance has invaded forcing the men and women of Gallia to take up arms to defend their country. You can command 10 characters from an available cast of over 40. Each warrior has specialist skills – Welkin is a tank commander, Alicia commands infantry, Largo is an anti-tank expert while Rosie leads her assault troops. Different troop types – infantry, armor and anti-tank - have strengths and weaknesses when pitted against other types.
The "BLiTZ" battle system lets you set the overall strategic framework - positioning your troops on the map and assigning objectives. As your troops move into position in the Action Phase, nearby enemy troops will begin firing. You can then zoom in to guide individual units in realtime with an over-the-shoulder view. Command your troops to take cover behind or leap over obstacles and charge to the attack. Progressive battle brings in new enemy troops as you clear areas forcing you to constantly update your strategy as new threats appear.
Valkyria Chronicles is rendered in a unique style thanks to the CANVAS engine where the 3D anime style characters and scenery look as if they are illustrated with paints and watercolors.

Gem of a game!
- Pros: This game really is a gem in a sea of mediocrity. Beautiful animation, great game play, a completely immersive universe, great story, dynamic characters, and a fantastic score.
they really did a great job with the story. The created an entire world with its own people, politics, culture, and story. Sega knocked this one out of the park!
- Cons: The cons are fairly small - parts of the story were a bit campy for me and some of the dialogue a bit cheesy.
I felt that the history book method of telling the story was a good idea and advanced the plot well, but it did break up the game play a bit. This isn't really a game you can sit down and play for a few minutes!
The game is set up as if you are reading about everything that happened in a history book. In addition to the episodic game play chapters, there are "tabs" that contain histories, biographies, and weapon\equipment info. There is also a "headquarters" section where you can train, level up, fine tune your squad etc. There is also a section where you visit an old guy at a graveyard who sometimes teaches you new abilities - these abilities are costly (in experience) and you often can't afford them. However, he teaches them at random and often teaches nothing at all. This can be frustrating if you "save up" only to find he has nothing to teach.
- Other Thoughts: I am a working adult who has gotten away from games as I've gotten older. That being said, I love my PS3. I use it as a media center PC, a Media Server for Hulu, Netflix watch now etc, and above all I use it for Blueray movies. I download all of the demos and buy a game very rarely, and VC was an instant buy for me after playing the demo. And the full game is even better!
The bottom line though? It's fun!
Must have for PS3 owner
- Pros: This is well worth more than my money. The graphic is fresh and different, in a good way. And SEGA really impressed me with the game play, style, and storyline. It has a lot to offer. Get it, you won't regret.
Depend on your play style, a single chapter might take as little as 30 minutes to two hours (well... counting in continues).
- Cons: The story could have been more perfected with more details. The world and background setup has a lot to offer. I guess they're saving it for later.
- Other Thoughts: All in all, one of the best game I've ever played.

One of the most wonderful games I have ever played
- Pros: This game.......is a treasure worth seeking for a thousand miles for. It is really the best way to describe it. The story is definitely the primary reason as to why I fell in love with this game.
The story is so immersive that you almost forget that this is fiction. As if this really happened during that time period and develop an emotional connection between the characters. This game truly defines "Interactive Novel" because that is exactly what it is.
The character designs are so beautiful (and the females rather cute) kudos to the design and artwork team at Sega, they did a masterful job.
The combat system is innovative with a mix Third Person, Tactical, RPG, and Shooter Elements. It is so many things at once yet they were able to pull it off.
I love the comic book style of graphics and I personally believe this is how it should be done for these kind of games.
I can't say enough about this game but if you own a PS3 or want a reason to buy a PS3......this is it.
- Cons: Voice acting can be a bit cliche at some points. But for the most part they did a wonderful job. Even at parts where the dialogue is cut off because it must load it (albeit a little unnerving but very bearable).
- Other Thoughts: My squad is mostly women particularly because of their reaction after they have headshotted someone. Sinister and CUTE at the same time.
Susie Evans is mine!!!
Ridiculously tough! just like all the other unrelated valkyrie titles
- Pros: great music, beautiful visuals, good storyline. Tactics, sniping, overall awesome and extremely satisfying battle system. Long battles, big, creative, battlefields. Hawt Valkyries. Still challenging and fun even if you've beaten it and want to replay it with carried-over eq/levels.
- Cons: nearly impossible to beat for new rpg players.
part 2 is ONLY PSP!! WHY OH HESUS WHY!!! I want to play it on my 52" HDTV, NOT ON A 4" 480 PIXEL SCREEN.
Things like this is why sega lost to snes in the first place!
- Other Thoughts: Although this title is unrelated to the other valkyrie titles (valkyrie profile, vp silmeria, vp plume...), it's just as ridiculously tough! (valkyries are just as hot too!) including invincible enemies that kill you in 1 hit. No amount of leveling will help you with that.
Most underrated PS3 game
- Pros: My roommate had this title for PS3 and I absolutely loved it. I recently bought a PS3 after he moved and I immediately ordered the game from New Egg. So while I've just received the game from them. I'd been playing it for months.
VC has unique but beautiful art style. It's similar to Okami's water color look but more detailed. The battle system combines turn based strategy with real time third person action, while not Gears of War, it had a cover system as well. Is unique and something that people typically turned off by turn based SRPGs can appreciate.
- Cons: If you ignore the optional chapters it can be short by SRPG standards. It still will take you around 30 hours to complete if you go that route. I would recommend the side chapters though. They really give depth to the games cast and add significant time to the game's length.
- Other Thoughts: This is my second time buying the game. I bought it once as a gift for a friend in Europe that couldn't find the game. I really like the region free aspect of the PS3.
