The small, energy rich nation of Principality of Gallia is located in a fictional Europe in the 1930's and lies between two larger, warring nations. Eager to seize the energy resources of its smaller neighbor, the East European Imperial Alliance has invaded forcing the men and women of Gallia to take up arms to defend their country. You can command 10 characters from an available cast of over 40. Each warrior has specialist skills – Welkin is a tank commander, Alicia commands infantry, Largo is an anti-tank expert while Rosie leads her assault troops. Different troop types – infantry, armor and anti-tank - have strengths and weaknesses when pitted against other types.

The "BLiTZ" battle system lets you set the overall strategic framework - positioning your troops on the map and assigning objectives. As your troops move into position in the Action Phase, nearby enemy troops will begin firing. You can then zoom in to guide individual units in realtime with an over-the-shoulder view. Command your troops to take cover behind or leap over obstacles and charge to the attack. Progressive battle brings in new enemy troops as you clear areas forcing you to constantly update your strategy as new threats appear.

Valkyria Chronicles is rendered in a unique style thanks to the CANVAS engine where the 3D anime style characters and scenery look as if they are illustrated with paints and watercolors.

5 out of 5 eggsFun title, with interesting gameplay style

Pros: *Unique mix of tactical rpg and third-person action game(w/ TANKS!)
*Solid campaign mode, fun characters, interesting universe
*Fairly Strong Voice Acting (not MGS quality, but well-done)
*Beautiful stylized graphics
* Very anime (if you like that sort of thing)
*Unique game-style rewards using your team members as a squad
*Each mission offers variety and challenge; the game really likes to mix things up on you

Cons: *long and frequent load-times
* In-game ranking system based totally upon how few moves it takes you to win a battle
*the troop movement mechanic doesn't give you a clue how far your unit can move on his/her turn until you select them, and this could be a real frustration for those who are used to more traditional grid combat, like in Front Mission, also, no "to-hit" percentage markers either
*Very anime (if you don't like that sorta thing)
*In game tutorials are somewhat lacking

Other Thoughts: I really enjoyed this game, but, as a tactical rpg vet., this game took me a while to really "get". Still, I had a lot of fun with it. Recommended!

Also, I've seen it in stores with a used price of $26, so the newegg price is a good one.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Interesting story
Good Graphics
Nice Music
Intuitive Gameplay
Very good price for a sealed "new" game

Cons: No real negatives.
The chapter I am currently on is very challenging, but many newer games seem to lack that.

Other Thoughts: If you are not into FPS games and like historical type /rpg games, you'd probably like this game. You can tell the developers put a lot of TLC in their game.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat game in a rare genre

Pros: I picked this up a while back but only got around to it in the past month. So far, I'm really enjoying the game. It has a bit of a visual novel element to it (In between action pieces, there's a cel shaded story presented similar to VNs), but what stands out are the action sections.

If you enjoyed old tactical games like the X-Com series, FF Tactics or Disgaea, I would say this game is a must-buy. There is RPG-like elements between rounds as you specialize and train squad-mates, upgrade and improve your AFV, research new equipment, etc.

Cons: More flexibility for your units would be nice. There are a handful of pre-determined classes, but it would be nice if your scouts could pick up an anti-tank weapon a fire it (Albeit at reduced effectiveness.) This leads to be a bit of a rock-paper-scissors, which is a design decision but I'd prefer a bit more flexibility from that system.

Being an older game, it does not have any trophies (I personally do not care, but some do), so it won't do anything for your PSN gamer score.

Finally, there is NO auto-save. So remember to save often, there are no "check-points" so you can end up loading and losing a lot of progress. More recent games all have copious amounts of check-points/autosaves, so you'll tend to forget to do so and it'll burn you.

Other Thoughts: Overall, this game is a real steal for $15. Seems like it's a bit of a forgotten gem in the early PS3 library, and that's a bit of a shame.

I'd buy this in a heartbeat if you own a PS3.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Game

Pros: Very addictive and fun just as others have stated! Characters are really well thought out. Music is cool and I like the pseudo-WWII storyline as well.

Cons: Not much of a major con, but it does take a bit to get used to all the different "Tabs" that are for leveling up and customizing chars etc.

Other Thoughts: What a fun game! If only it was 2+ players and online!!

5 out of 5 eggsVery Addictive!

Pros: The gameplay is fun and challenging. It's always fun to level up. The story is great and has a lot of episodes and cinematics.

Cons: Game starts off slow. When I started, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the tutorials levels.
Didn't feel like learning how to play.

Other Thoughts: Once you get used to it, the game can be very addictive. I spent like half an hour choosing the characters. $15! Get it!

5 out of 5 eggsOne of the most wonderful games I have ever played

Pros: This a treasure worth seeking for a thousand miles for. It is really the best way to describe it. The story is definitely the primary reason as to why I fell in love with this game.

The story is so immersive that you almost forget that this is fiction. As if this really happened during that time period and develop an emotional connection between the characters. This game truly defines "Interactive Novel" because that is exactly what it is.

The character designs are so beautiful (and the females rather cute) kudos to the design and artwork team at Sega, they did a masterful job.

The combat system is innovative with a mix Third Person, Tactical, RPG, and Shooter Elements. It is so many things at once yet they were able to pull it off.

I love the comic book style of graphics and I personally believe this is how it should be done for these kind of games.

I can't say enough about this game but if you own a PS3 or want a reason to buy a PS3......this is it.

Cons: Voice acting can be a bit cliche at some points. But for the most part they did a wonderful job. Even at parts where the dialogue is cut off because it must load it (albeit a little unnerving but very bearable).

Other Thoughts: My squad is mostly women particularly because of their reaction after they have headshotted someone. Sinister and CUTE at the same time.

Susie Evans is mine!!!

5 out of 5 eggsRidiculously tough! just like all the other unrelated valkyrie titles

Pros: great music, beautiful visuals, good storyline. Tactics, sniping, overall awesome and extremely satisfying battle system. Long battles, big, creative, battlefields. Hawt Valkyries. Still challenging and fun even if you've beaten it and want to replay it with carried-over eq/levels.

Cons: nearly impossible to beat for new rpg players.

part 2 is ONLY PSP!! WHY OH HESUS WHY!!! I want to play it on my 52" HDTV, NOT ON A 4" 480 PIXEL SCREEN.

Things like this is why sega lost to snes in the first place!

Other Thoughts: Although this title is unrelated to the other valkyrie titles (valkyrie profile, vp silmeria, vp plume...), it's just as ridiculously tough! (valkyries are just as hot too!) including invincible enemies that kill you in 1 hit. No amount of leveling will help you with that.
