5 out of 5 eggsYou CAN still download software

Pros: I've had two of these remotes for several years. They are fantastic!

Cons: You can no longer update the software using the update feature.

Other Thoughts: You CAN however download the software from the manufacturer's website at the bottom of the Overview page of the Professional section.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Support for this Great Remote

Pros: This remote has served me well for 3 years, and I never had a problem until recently when I had to reinstall the software on a new computer. The software is no longer available, and installing the old version will not upgrade to the newer firmware I am used to using (newer firmware supports learning without being attached to your computer). If you can manage to get a copy of the software to program this remote, then it will do pretty much anything. The only problem I've had is with the "0" key on one of my JVC remotes. They used to have really good forums to download preconfigured devices...

Cons: You no longer can download the software. Even if you have an old version of the software, you no longer can update to newer versions of the firmware, and official databases of devices seem to be gone.

Other Thoughts: Since URC no longer supports this product, Logic (Tech) would dictate that you look elsewhere for a remote.

5 out of 5 eggsBe carful

Pros: Great remote

Cons: Be careful because Universal no longer lets the consumer download the update database so you will have to program the remote yourself if you get a new device i.e. tv, receiver or such. They tell you to take it to a dealer to program for you, about $100 an hour.

4 out of 5 eggsNice but no perfect

Pros: See my MX-800RFS review.

Cons: Software not packaged with device. In order to get software, you need to go to the hidden web page which can be found by searching for "mx-850 editor php discussion" with the most popular internet search engine.

1 out of 5 eggsNot supported!

Pros: Probably a sweet remote, from what everyone else has said.

Cons: Remote DOES NOT WORK without the software for it, which is not included in purchase. Software is NO LONGER AVAILABLE for download. The only way to obtain a working version of this remote is to purchase it from an "authorized" seller.

Other Thoughts: I love NewEgg. Nearly everything I purchase is shipped quickly and is an amazing price. I'm having to return this remote because of the horrid support from the manufacturing company.

3 out of 5 eggsAlmost as good as the MX-500

Pros: PC Programmability
Custom Labeling
Hard Buttons
Good Layout

Cons: Removed chapter skip keys that were on MX-500
URC will only provide crippled software to customers who purchase from unauthorized dealers. That includes newegg.

Other Thoughts: I've used an MX-500 for 4 years. Never upgraded to the 700 cause I didn't like the change in button layout. (No chapter skip, and missing 3 dedicated macro keys.

I finally tried an MX-700, and discovered Universal Remote Controls has decided to restrict availability of the MX-editor software, without which the remote is unusable. If you don't get it from an authorized dealer, you can only get a crippled version with an old IR database and no live-update function.

5 out of 5 eggsbest remote so far

Pros: We bought this remote together with a Parasound home theater controller and programmed it to our special needs. The incredible versatility, the biggest IR command library we found so far and the easy use lead us to the decision to buy two more of them for other rooms of the house. A big 'congratulations' to the manufacturers of this remote!

Cons: Somehow a bit battery energy consuming device. We replace batteries every 2 months. But that is - considered everything - peanuts

Other Thoughts: Display names longer than 4 characters would be very useful

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost perfect!

Pros: Ability to program it via PC is great! I used to dread having to reconfigure my MX-500, but it's a snap with the MX-700. It performs well with great ergonomics and very high build quality. Very reliable and robust!

Cons: The serial connector is a pain, which requires a $xx adapter. It also doesn't do RF, but that's what the MX-800 is for (extra $xx). The 5 character limit for the LCD buttons is a bit restrictive. Wish I could use the MX-700 to train the MX-500. The MX Editor software IR database only had 2 correct model for my 7 components, and they both screwed up a bunch of the codes for the soft buttons (hard buttons were okay).

Other Thoughts: Highly recommended! Definitely use learning instead of the built-in IR database. You'll save yourself some aggravation. I've considered the Logitech 880, but it cost more and didn't seem as reliable and easy to use.

5 out of 5 eggsVery, very nice!

Pros: I have programmed a total of three of these remote, one of which is mine. It does what I want, when I want it. You can macro every single button on this thing, it can handle up to 20 devices which is WAY more than you should EVER need in your whole life. The backlight is extremely cool, perfect in the dark. IR works amazingly, meaning, i can basically hide the remote with the sensor sticking out, and it will most likely perform the function (I do have an IR repeater system). I love the software that comes with this to program it. Very easy to use. Just incredible. Oh, battery life rocks too, batterys can be dead for like 10 hours or something, and it doesn't lose it's programming.

Cons: Requires a serial port for connection (my Asus A8N-SLI has one =P), but most laptops don't have that one, and must rely on an adaptor. Not much else "wrong" about this remote, as that serial port thing is not nessicarely a huge problem.

Other Thoughts: This is the ultimate IR remote that UR sells. I've had mine for about 2 or 3 (or maybe more) years, and it still peforms great. As I said, I have an IR repeater system and most components aren't blocked, so I have no use for RF right now, and this IR remote is more than perfect, and is up to the task! Get one!

5 out of 5 eggsthe perfect remote

Pros: excelent range, very durable, conveniently placed buttons, biggest database device for a remote

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: It didn't have the codes for MCE when I bought it (in 2003). I called customer support and they e-mailed a file with the codes. Ain't that amazing?
