3 out of 5 eggsDecent starter IP camera

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Low cost, Plenty of basic options built into the camera. Resolution is what you would expect- color is fine.

Cons: Latest firmware allows the wifi's password to be seen instead of a bunch of "*" . Tried using the TrendNetPro software but is too complicated for me, but not needed. It is fairly easy to be able to see your camera on your home network, but in order to see it on a phone or tablet away from your home network, you need to set up port forwarding on your router and then on the camera. I had help from a friend and was able to get it to work via a web browser or on my Android phone. The latest Trendnetview Android software keeps asking me to install the latest firmware for the camera, which is older than the firmware that Trendnet sent me for the camera, which is not yet on their website to be downloaded. Can't change the user name and the password too. If you change the user name then you can only use the default password...

Other Thoughts: I found Trendnet to be responsive to my emails for help- best to email Adrian who monitors Trendnet posts on Newegg. After being able to use this camera I purchased another Trendnet IP camera from Newegg that has the zoom tilt swivel.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Geekdad,

We apologize for the issues you are having with the camera. The latest firmware should be 1.06.08. This is the latest found on our website. I have tested a camera here and was able to use a unique username and password on the unit without any issues. The current Android app is TRENDnetVIEW 1.4.0. Please ensure this is the version you have installed. Port forwarding is required as your router has a firewall that you need to provide access through. We do have cloud cameras available that do not require this amount of setup for easier installation. If you continue to have issues please email Adrian@trendndet.com. We would like to sort these issues out for you as soon as possible. Please include your contact information and a link to this review.

Adrian

5 out of 5 eggsMediocre Product, EXCELLENT CUSTOMER Service

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Regarding the product: wireless N speeds, easy setup
Regarding TRENDNET: customer service

Cons: Regarding the product: wireless N radio
Regarding TRENDNET: none

Other Thoughts: I purchsed two of these on sale and they're actually the first IP cams I've purchased for the house. Setup was very easy and straightforward since I know exactly how I wanted to set them up (no DDNS needed for each individual cam; just did port forwarding through my router). I can see though how this may be a daunting task for someone that might have less knowledge in networking. There are a lot of options available during setup so I can see where people might be overwhelmed. Having that many setup options are either good or bad depending on your skill level.

If I didn't have such a pleasant experience with Trendnet customer service, I would've easily rated this 1 egg. I set both of the cams up and both had bad noise for both audio and video. There was a lot of static on the audio and the video had multiple lines across the picture. I read through many reviews and most of them are right regarding this. I contacted customer service and it seems they may have been aware of an issue. To make a long store short, they quickly rectified the situation. I am up and running with minor issues. Based on that experience, I may look into more Trendnet cams in the future. As for this model, I probably won't buy this model again but will go with a more expensive Trendnet cam that might not have this issue.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Quality Cam

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Good image quality and good software setup options. This is my 4th Trendnet camera. I give Trendnet high marks for quality. The only setup tool I used was the finder tool that tells you the default IP address of the camera, so I can't comment on setup.

Cons: For my uses, I don't see any negatives for a camera in this price range. I did have some trouble changing the administrator password. There appears to be a conflict when using it with IE11 in Win 8. Maybe I have to use the compatibility setting for the browser page, if I really needed to change it.

Other Thoughts: I like the option of changing lens in my cameras to meet my needs. My two earlier generation Trendnet cameras used lens that were physically short. In order to use the popular lens that most other cameras use, you had to change the mount to one with more threads. Cameras of this generation use the longer lens, so all that is required to change the lens is to open it up and replace it with a different one. In order to make lens changes easier, you have to cut the shoulder off the lens adjustment ring so it can be removed from the mount and housing without having to disassemble the camera. This camera, and likely others of this series have an IR filter covering the CCD. If you want the camera to see in the dark with an external source of IR illumination, you have to remove the lens mount to remove the IR filter. Some cameras use lens with an IR filter on the back of the lens, but not this variety.

2 out of 5 eggsAudio

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Price, caught it on sale for $30. Video is as advertised after some minor adjustments.

Cons: Audio is full of static regardless of settings. Unfortunately I purchased to use as a monitor in the babies room and will have to find another use where audio isn't required.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: None

Cons: Arrived DOA . No help instructions in their setup guide. Now the process of getting a refund

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend to anyone looking for an IP cam. Typical Chinese product it either works or doesn't, they're just pushed out in numbers and hopefully one will work.

3 out of 5 eggsNarrow view angle

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Easy to move around and to access from internet. Set up was not difficult and the set up program walks you through all the steps in the proper sequence. The cloud service simplifies internet access, without it these cameras are almost impossible to setup.

Cons: This camera has a very narrow view angle (38 degrees) so the only reasonable application is for viewing from another room or down a long hallway. Set up in a home office it would only cover the door not the inside wall to wall. The camera has zoom feature and would be ok if this was a HD camera. Even without zoom the picture is poor and with the first (2x) zoom you can see the pixels. You can not move around on the zoom as it closes in on the center of the view so its useless. The ads for the camera are contrived, you could not put this in a child's room because almost all of the time he would be outside the view of the camera.

Other Thoughts: It is worth the $XX I paid for it but I'm not sure where to place it so the camera would be of any real value.

Manufacturer Response:

Adrian

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: TRENDnet TV-IP551W 640 x 480 Max Resolution RJ45 Wireless IP Camera

Pros: Simple install using provided software. Company honors warranty. Decent low light. Manual focus. Unobtrusive design. Most issues will be readily apparent vs. later down the road, making it easier to deal w/.

Cons: Not as many settings options as the older models; many options missing on this camera are available on the higher priced POE models, though. Average video clarity (it's standard 640x480). Manual focus; yes I know it's listed as a Pro, but too many people ignore the focus. Some units have great wifi range, others not so much. Probably not worth the $100 MSRP most sites like to sport before giving a "discount", but w/ inflation and even poorer quality competition it's what it is.

Other Thoughts: The overall rating for the 551W is based on a $45-$70 price, so keep that in mind. This is not a top of the line camera, and in incapable of providing video clarity to track a dime 50ft away. That being said, for a mid-range camera, it is a good camera. It is more of a monitoring camera vs. picking a face out of a crowd camera. The company does honor the 3yr warranty as long as you're willing to go through the baby steps of tech support. When installed, they don't scream "hey, there's a camera here," but they're noticeable enough that the wife will say that.
