4 out of 5 eggsGreat camera for the patient gadgetophile. But aren't they all..

Pros: HD provides better clarity than 930L, and H.264 keeps the bandwidth requiremnts low. Settings allow you to create motion or sound triggers to take a screen shot or short video and upload to a FTP site (such as a local NAS) for simplified duty as a security camera. You can also set default frame rates, resolutions and video format (mjpeg or h.264) as well as many other settings.

D-link's mydlink service allows you to see live video and manage some features from a browser on internet without having to poke holes in your firewall, and several phone/tablet apps are available for the same purpose. While it seems these tools often override your default video settings, they do so intelligently based on the bandwith available.

This is a simple and effective approach to being able to view your cameras remotely while traveling or at work, but does require you "live" in the dlink ecosystem, and doesn't work for other vendors cameras.

The cameras can also feed to a number of 3rd party applications -- but those often are only useful from within your home network, not the internet.

All in all its a great solution, and a nice camera.

Cons: No wired ethernet, Slightly shorter power cable than previous cameras. Reboots, setting changes and firmware upgrades all take longer than you expect and provide limited feedback while you wait, so be patient. The "auto setup" process, as with most wifi gadgets is a little rough. I did not try with a WPS router, which might have eased the process a bit. Since there is no wired ethernet connection you cannot to just plug this into your network and start playing with settings from a browser.

The setup process I followed was a bit like this. I took the iphone route, which many of you might try as well.
(1) power up the camera and wait for it to boot.
(2) from my phone, download the mydlink home app for ios, and start the app. I logged in with an existing account (already have a number of older cameras).
(3) chose, under settings, to add a camera. the app prompts me to scan the qr code provided with the camera (on a convenient card, which also contains the default wifi password for the device.
(4) after giving the app permission to use my iphone camera, i snapped a pic of the qr code.
(5) but that didn't work (or did it?). so the manual screen prompted me to choose the camera model.
(6) the app them prompts me to go to iphone settings and connect to the camera's wifi ssid, using the password on the qr card.
(7) once connected to the camera, the app asks me to choose my home wifi ssid from a scan of local ssids, and provide wifi password. This actually took a lot longer then expected for it to scan the local area, so be patient. I thought it wasn't working, but it eventually did.
(8) then the app promted me to reconnect my iphone back to my home wifi network, while the camera rebooted and attempted to connect to the home wifi network as well. This took a while, too.
(9) phew, when i reenter the mydlink home app, it eventually finds the new camera.
(10) tells me the camera needs a firmware update. I click on it, but it doesn't do anything.
(11) i start up the mydlink lite app, which i already had on my phone for my other cameras
(12) mydlink lite sees the new camera, along with all the old ones. yay.
(13) when i click on the new camera, it also prompts me to upgrade the firmware. I say yes, and the firmware upgrade, this time, starts. I wait.
(14) takes a while but eventually the firmware update completes and the camera is visible again.

now we're good to go. If your router is set up for WPS, the process should be much simplified, since you can connect the camera directly to your wifi network without all the back and forth described above.

Other Thoughts: Dlink continues to improve their IP cameras with solid web-features, triggers and integration with other dlink devices such as alarms, motion sensors, lighting control and environmental sensors. Since these technologies are evolving constantly, expect some growing pains, especially when combining older devices with newer ones. Not an issue for the dauntless gadgetophile, with plenty of options.

Once set up on the network, the most flexibilty to tweak the camera settings is found on the camera's local web page, which is easy to reach in windows 10 (just look on your network for the camera using windows explorer and click on it -- this should launch a web browser). It does require java to be installed on your computer, and some sort of active x plug in, but with those, you have compete control of the camera settings, including being able to FTP triggered screen grabs to a nas.

To get the latest firmwares, you'll need to use either the mydlink web service or the apps (although the ios mydlink home app gave me some trouble.) It seems these services get the newest firmware before they are available for direct download and manual installation via local web interface.

Recommended. Once you get through the setup, all will be well.

3 out of 5 eggsSetup was tedious

Pros: Minimal packaging is a plus. (Less for the landfill)
• Mounting of the device is easy and actually very handy. The base is mounted, and the device connects to the base with a ball-and-joint, allowing one to make adjustments easily. Really nice.
• Nighttime viewing is good-to-great. One is able to see quite a bit in low-light conditions. Completely dark viewing is ok-to-good
• Daytime viewing with sunlight or well-lit indoor lighting is good-to-great. Video images are crisp and clear.
• Video was clear and acceptable at all light levels.
• Micro USB power connection is a great choice – I could see how I might use a power pack to make this truly wireless and mobile.

Cons: As far as I could tell, one can only setup this device through a phone app…and, that was a challenge.
• Documentation is sparse and woefully inadequate. Found more help online via search.
• Phone app is poor and not intuitive – was only able to setup with this device, and even that was a struggle. Windows Phone app is slightly better, however, I was unable to connect to the camera via

Other Thoughts: Was not able to quickly connect, configure, and setup camera as per instructions. Needed to use the WPS setup via device (via educated guess) and my router to get connected. Took over an hour to get it setup and usable, which is far too long for a device like this. Hard to recommend a product that takes so long to setup. I followed the instructions, and was very patient, but it should be a snap to setup and this isn’t.
• 2 months of use and it works. My other gripe is that the free “Lite” app seems to not be the greatest app out there – not too many features available.
• Unfortunately, there is no way to tie this in with my current home security system. Maybe all of the camera vendors will come together and create a standard so I don’t have to log into multiple systems to get a single view.

4 out of 5 eggsGood but with software bugs

Pros: - Small and compact - you can put it on bookshelfs or on wall but it's not bulky where you can see it's a camera there on a wall
- Quality design and construction - won't simply break even if it falls from counter or book shelf
- Good (and smart) cable management with the mount - there is a small cut out under the mount so you can place the cable through the back
- Good placement of power port as well
- Supports (finally!) regular microUSB port for power input
- Supports 720p video (more on that in the "Other Thoughts" section) - the wide viewing angle lenses helps a lot to cover my whole living room rather than just a tiny spot where I point it to.
- Supports the new 802.11AC WiFi protocol (for faster bandwidth speeds)
- IR for night time viewing is best I've seen, really good video quality even in total darkness
- Remote viewing, the app supports Web Browser, Android and IOS (Apple)
- Sound detection and motion detection to activate alerts which you can turn on or off and has a couple of other settings via the web browser, Android or IOS app.
- Overall, it was a pretty easy setup from start to finish. The included instructions made it super simple to get started and walk you through the process. The included barcode makes it simple to use your smartphone and scan the barcode to go exactly to where you need to get the app. Connecting to my WiFi was easy too, I was ble to simply push the WPS button on the back of the camera and my router and it was connected.
- Comes with mounting screws to mount onto walls too.

Cons: The most annoying thing I encountered was losing connection (randomly) to the D-Link DCS-935L HD (which I will refer to as the IPCAM from now on). I wouldn't mind if it lost connectivity even once a day...but nope, it lost connection as much as 5 times within a 3 minute period, then it would lose connectivity randomly. Some days, it would work fine...then the next day it would lose its mind! It even lost connection while I was trying to remotely view it.

Anyways, I work from home so I use this to monitor where my 4 year old plays in the next room to me. I always have a web browser connected to the IPCAM via on a separate monitor while I work and it would randomly just go black. Both my PC and the IPCAM are within the same network too. A note would pop up from my Android MyDlink app stating that I've lost connection to the IPCAM. I'd check my internet connection and everything is fine. I don't even have the IPCAM set too far away, maybe just 10 feet away from the router...in fact, my computer where I work at is farther away and I'm still getting good WiFi and internet connection on my PC. After a couple of tests, I'm thinking it's a bug from either the software or hardware of the IPCAM. Please fix this!

Installation was pretty simple but I did run into some trouble downloading the update. I can see from the app (after downloading and installing and configuring) that it's telling me that it's downloading new firmware. That's fine, however 45 minutes later, the app froze. I was able to close the app and restart the app, but then again I had to download the firmware again....3 times I did this and finally the firmware updated on the IPCAM.

I am glad that this IPCAM supports microUSB, but the power adapter that came with this IPCAM is way too short. Another 2 feet more of cord would be great.

The notifications with the motion detection and sound detection work fine, they were able to send me notifications when there was motion or sound detected, but when I unplugged the device to move it, the settings were all erased. I had to manually go in and retype the emails and password to log in and tell it to start sending me notifications again.

Not a biggie, but web browser you use MUST support JAVA. I use Chrome mostly and had to fine out that I had to turn Java "ON" before I could view it through Chrome....again not a biggie but just a warning to everyone. Works fine on Internet Explorer though.

Other Thoughts: The 720p video is reasonable. I did expect the picture quality to be a little more clear but I don't have other color web cams to compare it to with this quality.

On the other hand, I have seen black and white video cameras before and during night time and when there is literally no light at all, the IR sensors on this IPCAM works very well. I can see virtually everything like the daytime except it's in black and white. When I'm on the same network, the movement is fluid like a video and not choppy at all. When I did view it remotely, using LTE on my phone, the video was a little choppier but not so bad where there was blurr when someone is moving in it.

Overall, I like this IPCAM. I want to LOVE it but the biggest gripe I have is that the IPCAM loses connectivity to my internal WiFI randomly. It was easy to set up, connecting via the included MyDLink app wasn't too terrible (except the firmware update part), and using it to see my son playing in the next room (in color) is just awesome. I did log on via the app remotely while I was at the store and traveling and the connection was pretty smooth as well.

It does what it says it does, minus some software bugs. The hardware delivered as they said. The Night Vision is very good too. IF DLink were to solve the software bugs, I would recommend this web cam...otherwise without this fix, it's unreliable.

JUST A THOUGHT: DLink, what if I were to purchase 5 of these and put them around my house. I'm thinking each would suck up my bandwidth on my internal WiFi network. Is there a solution to having all 5 connected to a "server" so that it doesn't suck all the bandwidth from my network?

4 out of 5 eggsGood but has some annoying problems.

Pros: ** First I should say that I am giving this 4 stars, but was *very* close to giving it 3 stars. Just due to the bugs I have encountered. **

+Nice looking camera with a wide angled viewing lense to see a large portion of the room or area that its aimed at.

+It does have Android and iOS apps which you also use to initially set it up, but the internal interface that you can access through a web browser has FAR more options and settings. The settings when accessed through a browser look very similar to a DLink routers settings.

+The web browser settings allow you to have the camera send you an email when it detects motion. I can send either 6 snapshots within a certain time-frame of the motion, or you can send a 10 second video clip after motion is detected, including a few seconds before it detected the motion. Either can be sent to your email address or an FTP. (Read my cons/comments about the problem with this though) To access the web browser interface you will need the IP address that your router gave the camera and type that in your browser

+The camera has a good picture on it, and even the night viewing lights up a room in total darkness. Better than I had expected anyways.

+Unlike some other reviews I have read, I have had very good wireless range on this camera. Using it with my 802.11ac Netgear R7000 router, I can reach the opposite side of our 65' house, even on 5ghz I am getting a 117mbps connected speed that far away.

Cons: -I had a hard time installing this at first through the Android app. Downloading new firmware was slow, and even when it got to the point where it tried to detect the camera it took a long time, many times timing out before it did detect the camera. It would even reject the default password for the camera. It took me several re-installs (holding in a paperclip for 10 seconds to reset the camera) to get it to finally accept the password. Personally I think its best if you skip the part where the Android app reads the QR Code on the card that comes with it, as I had better luck choosing the manual method and just picking the camera from the list.

-The motion detection works good, and the sending of the video clip or photos worked very good for me once I set it up. However that all changed once I unplugged the camera to move it somewhere else, then plugged it back in. It stopped sending the video clip even though it detected the motion. The ONLY way I could fix this was by manually entering the web browser interface and clicking on the "send test-email", and then clicking the save button again. Obviously this is a huge bug in the firmware.

-The web browser interface only allows you to see the live video if you have java installed. However I had better luck on the mydlink website viewing the live video, or just using the app to view the live video.

-The USB cable which powers the camera is attached to a power adapter, the length is much shorter than I would like. Although you probably could run an extension cord to it.

Other Thoughts: When this camera is working, it works very well. Its just the time consuming bugs that I came across which I mentioned in my cons, that I did not like.

This camera would also be good even if you didn't use it to send you clips for motion. You could use it for a baby monitor or even checking in on a pet if you are away from home. It does have a built in mic to pick up sound also.

The instructions that come with it are incredibly very basic, and you need to initially set it up using the app. It doesn't even mention the web interface. However you can download their manual off of their website which does mention all this, and I would highly recommend downloading that PDF file.

The only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 3 is because it works good when it is working.

3 out of 5 eggsSo so

Pros: Setup was relatively painless. QR code card included made downloading the app for my Android phone and configuring the camera a breeze. Easy WPS setup for WiFi as well.

Good night vision as well.

Can take a snapshot from the app or the web browser interface.

Can view remotely, away from home via mydlink login via the phone app or web browser.

Cons: Picture is 720P resolution but is not very clear and seems to be an upscaled image, not actual 720P. Retail price is far too high. Sale price makes it a reasonably priced item though.

Other Thoughts: The firmware update that it performed right after setup took a long, long time to complete. I had my scared that the update was going to fail and brick the item.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsFINALLY!

Pros: Crossing my fingers, seems to work

Cons: nonexistent support

Other Thoughts: This will be my final (I hope) comment on this camera. After a couple of weeks effort, I THINK I have it running properly - and with NO support at all from D-Link (does D-Link support even exist??). I ended up installing the latest firmware THREE times and it finally seems to work as it should.

My recommendation: if you have a choice between this camera and another, choose the other, especially if you expect to need support from D-Link. I chose the 935 because of its FOV and physical dimensions. Given my experience, I would have opted for a Foscam (like the C1 I already have) if it would have fit in the area I need to place it.

1 out of 5 eggsStill not working an no reply from DLink

Pros: good video when it works.

Cons: VIDEO GOES TOTALLY WHITE!

Other Thoughts: Follow up to previous comments. When the camera works, it's great BUT it periodically goes totally white and the only thing bringing it out of its stupor is power cycling. Still waiting for a reply from DLink...

3 out of 5 eggs2nd try

Pros: good video - when it works

Cons: inconsistent video

Other Thoughts: This is my 2nd attempt at the DCS-935. Got it all set up, updated the firmware to the latest, turned off the LEDs (have it looking thru a window), set Day Only mode. Seems to work fine UNTIL something glitches and the video turns totally white (like it wants to be in night IR mode). Other times, it turns dark for a few seconds and comes back to life OK. Soft reboot does nothing, the only thing that works is disconnecting power.

Other than this not-so-insignificant problem, the video quality is quite good, when it works...I sent an email to Dlink, hopefully they will respond either to that email or this review.

For now, I'm not sure this camera is ready for prime time.

2 out of 5 eggsGood video

Pros: very good video

Cons: VERY weak WiFi signal
Difficult setup with iPad app that is barely functional

Other Thoughts: Camera specs look great but the WiFi signal is miserable. Half what my old DCS-930L produces side-by-side. Can't use it for my intended purpose as is. Waiting for response from D-Link to see if this is a hardware problem or what. We'll see how they respond - I couldn't find a telephone number so I had to send them an email - not exactly great customer service.
