4 out of 5 eggsFollow-up review

Pros: Still going strong

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: This is a follow-up review from my previous review in December of 2013. We've had this camera for over six months now and it has been working great. Recording 1080p with Zoneminder on Ubuntu 12.04.

We just bought 15 more of these cameras, hope they last. I'm a bit concerned about the comments by "Gordon P" but we shall see. First I must point out that my "HARDWARE LIMITED WARRANTY" says THIRTY-SIX MONTHS, or 3 years... not sure why he was told 60 days. I would fight them on it big time.

Anyway, 7 of the 15 cameras I got work and are now installed and recording. The rest will get installed in a couple months. I'll report back again in about six months to state how things are going.

1 out of 5 eggs1 in 3 Died, Short 60 day Warranty, Poor Customer Service

Pros: 2 out of 3 units still work, 1 died within 5 weeks.

Cons: 1 in 3 units died within 3 weeks. Warranty period is only 60 days, customer service refused to replace unit with a new unit.

Other Thoughts: Avoid this company at all costs! For a $600 camera you would expect at least a 1 year warranty. We bought three of these units for use inside datacenter spaces, one of the units died within 6 weeks.

When we tried to contact Vivotek for a return (RMA VU02293) they refused to provide a new unit, and would only send a refurbished unit in it's place. We went to consider our options and then forget about it, now 11 months after purchase we find the the original "DOA" warranty period is only 60 days.

60 days warranty for a $600+ IP camera unit is ridiculous. The customer service representatives denied our request to reconsider and to send a new unit. I would avoid this company, their product is obviously not stable if one in three units has failed and they only offer a 60 day warranty (they must know that these cameras fail often).

4 out of 5 eggsGreat camera w/ few annoyances

Pros: - Great price
- Simple mounting system, easy to install
- Mount can keep the cable completely internal so it is not exposed to the elements and vandalism.
- Flexible mounting options though, can move cable to rear of camera casing, or exit out of top or bottom of mount, or straight out the back of the mount so the cable is not exposed.
- Good picture quality
- Excellent viewing angle, the best yet i've seen from a bullet style camera.
- WDR is very helpful
- Good webpage management
- Supports multiple codecs

Cons: - Mount and camera has little teeth/gears where they connect, this makes aiming your camera more difficult as you can't get precise positioning on the left and right.
- Cable for camera is rather short, could make it challenging if you cannot have the Ethernet coupler in a weather sealed box very close to the camera.
- Lens doesn't seem as clean and crisp as it is in the sample videos, maybe I need to work more on the focus (I had difficulty focusing the camera in -10 C \ 15 F temperatures). I really should of done it while I was on the ground. I have a blurry spot in the upper left corner.

Other Thoughts: Overall a good camera, a lack of long cable from the camera wasn't a big deal as I just mounted the camera right onto an outdoor electrical box. Seems sturdy enough although not a perfect solution because if someone where to grab and hang onto the camera i'm sure the box would break.

The left\right aiming is really annoying because of the little notches in the mount and on the camera.

The sunshield is visible when in its most forward position and you are zoomed out all the way. Although it is just the two top corners so you probably won't lose anything other than sky.

My only wish is that this camera had an electric motor to control the focus and zoom so it could be done remotely... but that would add to the cost and possibly the reliability.

Upgraded the cameras firmware from 0101b to 0104a, no problems at all. Webpage layout changed a bit but I like it better.

So far very happy with the camera, but hope to get it focused better and will try to report back in 6 months.

5 out of 5 eggsa lot of HD security for the money

Pros: we've had exccellent reliability with the other Vivotek cams here.... especially those supported by QNAP and Blue Iris systems.
this one is going to be installed at a receiving dock in a truck warehouse.... we expect to have it working right off.
product is very well made
engineered for substantial extremes of temperature and exposure... have worked two years in Eastern USA weather all ambient temps.

Cons: sometimes back order status short stock

Other Thoughts: specs;
2-megapixel CMOS Sensor
3 ~ 9 mm Vari-focal, Auto-iris Lens
Up to 30 fps @ 1080p Full HD
Removable IR-cut Filter for Day & Night Function
Built-in IR Illuminators, effective up to 15 Meters
Supports WDR Enhancement for Unparalleled Visibility in Extremely Bright and Dark Environments
Real-time H.264, MPEG-4 and MJPEG Compression (Triple Codec)
Weather-proof IP67 rated Housing
Built-in 802.3af Compliant PoE
Built-in SD/SDHC Card Slot for On-board Storage
Mounting Bracket with Cable Management for Protected Installation

the IR coverage spec seems accurate
this was a big item with us a transport conditions are often in low light or poor weather....

5 out of 5 eggsWell built

Pros: I purchased 4 of these cameras about 4 months ago. I've used other brands but this camera has been the best out door bullet i've used to date. easy to install and great image

Cons: make sure you know what your doing or at least have a competent IT person to set this camera up to get the best results

Other Thoughts: wasn't sure about this brand but it's really holds its own against supposedly higher end brands i've used in the past.
