4 out of 5 eggsBasic CMOS Camera

Pros: It is an low cost CMOS video camera that is fairly sturdy and well made. It comes with a nice long 3 wire extension cable (video, sound, power), a wall wart power supply, and an adapter to use it with a 9V battery. It is not weather proof but it is sealed well enough for long term indoor use or possibly in a well-protected outdoor location.
I plugged it into the video/sound ports on my TV and it worked.

Cons: While the web page says "510 x 492 (NTSC), 628 x 582 (PAL)" suggesting USA NTSC and EU/UK PAL. I tested it, it only does NTSC. I had seen the other review saying this so I checked via Newegg chat before ordering and was told if the webpage listed PAL it would do PAL. Well, no PAL, at least in the version shipped to my USA address, it is strictly US NTSC. Unfortunately I needed PAL.

Other Thoughts: The microphone picked up voices from across a large room. With two 75 watt table lamps and no sun light the picture was a bit grainy with a greenish tint but otherwise clear. In a room with a little sun light and a overhead light the picture is clear with acceptable color.
CMOS cameras are low cost to produce and are perfect for many applications. They have a somewhat limited dynamic range meaning they wash out in bright scenes and perform poorly in low light when compared with most CCD cameras. There are a few high end CMOS cameras approaching CCD performance but this is not in that category.

4 out of 5 eggsReview continued - outdoor testing, IR

Pros: Reasonable video if good lighting is provided, such as in an office or a store setting.

Cons: Poor in low light. Poor dynamic range -- light-colored objects get washed out, dark-colored object appears all black.

Other Thoughts: Although not intended to be used outdoors (it's not waterproof), pointing the camera outside during daytime, objects that are light-colored (concrete, blue sky) or exposed to direct sunlight (cars, trees, people/faces, and even a red brick wall) is washed out and appears bright white, otherwise the video is acceptable. Video is unusable when it gets dark, as expected.

Camera is night-vision capable with external IR lighting, though I haven't tested how sensitive it is -- I tested this indoors by pointing my other night-vision surveillance camera at a dark corner to light it up with IR, and this camera picked up a decent B/W video.

3 out of 5 eggsSwann SW211-DSC DIY SecurityCam(TM) Color Security Camera with Audio

Pros: Camera captures reasonable video if lighting is right (bright but not direct-sunlight bright). Can identify a person's face 10 ft away if properly illuminated. Given the price point w/rebate I'd give it 3.5 eggs.

Cons: Poor in low light. Poor dynamic range -- light-colored objects get washed out, dark-colored object appears all black.

In a window-blind shaded room during daytime, video is most noisy and anything that's not light-colored appears black. With a 40 Watt fluorescent tube turned on, video is much more usable and adequate for surveillance purposes, though light-colored objects like a salmon-colored cloth is washed out as bright white and there's still not much detail with dark/shaded objects. Colors are a bit off with minor orange/green/blue tint in areas, and video a bit soft. This camera requires good lighting, and works well in an office setting.

Other Thoughts: Camera shipped is NTSC (US/CA/NA) model and cannot be switched to PAL. The PAL specs in Newegg/Swann's description are applicable to EU/AU model only (not that anyone here cares). Camera has 3-ft power/dual-RCA-output cable coming out from the bottom of the camera chassis, in addition to the 16-ft power/dual-RCA extension cable. A 9-Volt battery power adapter stub cable is also included which I have no use for (and is admittedly of limited use for a wired camera).

Viewing angle is verified to be 35 degrees as per Newegg and Swann's website, not 52 deg per the product package. Uses standard "6mm" size lens so you can change the viewing angle by swapping in another one.
