5 out of 5 eggsA lot better than I thought it would be...

Pros: I needed an idiot-proof video recording system and settled on the Swann after pouring over reviews for 2 weeks. As it turned out, it is a very good system. The manual is VERY good and explains everything fairly well. The system included a 500GB WD Green AUDX HDD, a decent remote, and a wired USB mouse, along with the 4 IR cameras.

Cons: The included wired mouse is junk, chuck it and buy a good one if you intend to use it.

The GUI is sort of crude, but it's not like I'll be surfing the internet on it. It's fairly intuitive... I fooled around with it before reading the manual and I pretty much had everything figured out and working.

The cables included are 60' long... long enough to go from the front of my house and into an interior closet where the recorder box is set. I have one run that will probably be a tight fit... Swann offers a cable extension.

The box is small, which is nice, but sort of flimsy. I had to build a stand to set the fairly heavy Sony monitor I have rather than set it on the box. It's also assembled with 5 (or 7?) screws that have to be removed if you want to gain access to the HDD. Seriously old school.

The USB port to transfer data from recordings is on the BACK of the unit, underneath 3 other plugs... not very easy AT ALL to get to with a USB drive to download video. I'm going to have to get a USB extension or hub. Poor planning.

Other Thoughts: I bought the 4-channel unit... I wish I would have bought the 8-channel unit so I could add another camera or two if I needed to in the future. Think about that before you get this 4-channel unit.

I wish I could send the bill for this unit to the jerk who stole the equipment out of the back of my truck... the reason I had to get this in the first place.
