2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't hold up long term

Pros: The cameras are really good.

Cons: The DVR's, at least the 2 I have owned eventually have issues and become useless. The first one quit working for me after 90 days of use. The 2nd one (replacement under warranty) lasted about 13 months and is slowly dying on me. About every 3 days the DVR is in some state of lock up and if you click the split screen to view a single screen the screen goes black and you have to pull the power and cold boot it to get it to show video again. It then appears to be working normally but all video that was recorded earlier on the same day you pull the power is not saved. Previous days are there for some reason. The warranty is now expired so I am shopping for a replacement DVR.

Other Thoughts: This is my 3rd review on this item and you can go back and read them all under this same handle. I like the product up until it doesn't work anymore.
I had the DVR set up to continuously record all 4 cameras and did not use the motion detection. Maybe this is why neither one lasted very long, but I have done this with other brands it they are still going strong. I did ask Rosewell to give me a break and honor the warranty since I was only 30 days over on the 2nd one but it was a no go and I can’t really blame them. They did offer me a $25 in store credit here at newegg which I have not actually received at this point but that's better than nothing if I actually get it. It would probably not of been a good idea to send me another one anyway since it too would have more than likely quit on me eventually. If you are serious about getting a DVR for security purposes and want one that lasts for more than a year I would try a different brand. A good one in my opinion should at least last 5 years even at this price point. ** I have tried some of the things mentioned in other reviews to try and revive this DVR but none of them helped.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: Great, these four stock cameras were easy to hook up, the wires are easy to hide and they are easy to manually move, and the price was right on.

Cons: In complete darkness, the night vision is a little sketchy.

Other Thoughts: Great product, and I coupled it with a 2tb hard drive, it works fantastically.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good deal for the price

Pros: Easy to set up, recognized hard drive and formatted on first start up. Very detailed downloadable manual. GUI is easy to navigate. Cameras have a fairly wide field of view and night vision is quite decent out to 60' or so. Cables are long enough for most locations and sturdy.

Cons: None. It is a low cost, entry level kit and is a good value for what it costs. It was what I expected . I would prefer compatibility with other browsers besides IE.

Other Thoughts: I want to mention Rosewill's customer service. As I was setting this up, I made a mistake entering a password and locked myself out of the system menu. My Fault, not the machines. I emailed Rosewill CS at about midnight on a Saturday night and they were back to me with the answer in less than an hour. I consider this OUTSTANDING.

4 out of 5 eggsLockup Problem/My Solution

Pros: Nice quality video output, good price when on sale, long camera cables, was easy to install my own hard drive and initialize the unit. Hardest part by far was running the camera cables discretely. What a job!

Cons: After 11 months of flawless service, the front panel DVR buttons and the mouse became completely unresponsive making it impossible for me to change the camera view, or to enter the menu to change any other settings. I first tried what is suggest on the top of the DVR for just such a problem - Press the Fast Forward Button on the remote to reset the video output. This did not help at all. After some trial and error including a support call to Rosewill, this is what finally worked. FWIW, the Rosewill guy suggested the part about unplugging and re-plugging the front panel connectors. The rest were my ideas.

After disconnecting everything that was plugged into the DVR, including the power cable....

1- After taking the top off the DVR unit I unplugged the cable connecting the front panel to the main system board on both ends, and re-plugged both ends each several times to wear off any possible tarnish or corrosion that might have been inhibiting the connection.

2- Unplugged the hard drive SATA Cable on both ends and re-connected them. This step was probably unnecessary.

3- Removed the mainboard backup battery to reset the system clock etc. Waited 5 minutes, put it back in and secured the top of the DVR unit in place. I think this may have been the key to my eventual success, but I am not positive of this.

4- Reconnected the cameras, monitor, mouse and power cable to the DVR unit. After initialization, there was still no front panel or mouse response. The time had reset to the incorrect "factory setting".

5- Unplugged the DVR from main power supply again for just a few seconds. After the unit initialized there was still no front panel or mouse response other than the FF button video reset.

6- Unplugged the DVR from main power supply again. Waited a bit longer, 1-2 minutes or so, then re-connected main power supply. After this initialization, I was able to use the Fast Forward button on the mouse to reset the video output properly. After doing this reset 3 times in rapid succession, the mouse pointer finally appeared and I was able to enter the menu to reset the time/date/clock. Saved changes, exited menu. Now the front panel buttons became responsive, but I was unable to get the DVR into “record” mode at all.

7- Went into the menu again, found the settings for the hard drive, which was properly recognized. Chose the “Format” option, formatted the hard drive and when it was done, exited menu.

8- The unit was automatically recording on all three connected cameras when I exited the menu screen.

So it was a bit aggravating, but the unit appears to be functioning properly at this time.

I hope none of you experience this "lockup" problem, but if you do, all is not necessarily lost.

Other Thoughts: All in all this is a very nice unit for the money. I was able to reach Rosewill customer support quickly, they took my name and number and a tech person called me within 5 minutes or so. He was very nice, spoke English well, and gave me the advice stated as #1 above, and offered two more options for resolution to my problem if I was unable to get things working right. Neither solution was very convenient, so I am glad it did not come down to having to exercise my warranty for a replacement to get this working.

Option one involved pulling out all that wire I spent 14 hours running and concealing, and returning everything for a complete new "Kit". There was simply NO WAY I was going to do this. Period.

Option two involved me buying a brand new Kit of the same model, taking the DVR out to replace my "problem" unit, and then shipping my old DVR with all the other new Kit parts back to Newegg for a complete refund. I could have done this, but I certainly didn't want to, and it would likely have cost me shipping at least one way, if not both.

Now you can see why I was willing to take a few hours to try to fix this on my own. Neither method offered was exactly consumer/user friendly.

So count me quite happy I was able to find a solution that did not involve a return/replacement process. : )

4 out of 5 eggsWorks!!

Pros: Price, 8 channels, Sony Cameras, remote viewing, motion sensor alert, long cables

Cons: 1 USB port, can't remove/resize timestamp, performance at night is acceptable but don't expect to make out a face or license plate. Support and documentation is lacking, software interface takes some getting used to.

Other Thoughts: I recently discovered that you can setup a motion detection area and have the unit beep for a set amount of time, it will also zoom in to the triggered object if you want it to. Very nice if someone is snooping around your driveway in the early morning hours.

Other Thoughts: This is a great unit I am well Pleased.
Everything is good quality. The DVR
unit works and responds great so far.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Long decent cables, sturdy cameras, view of cameras is good, good shipping, good packaging, slim DVR.

Cons: The GUI for the DVR, and the remote, are tedious. That is the worst thing about this setup. I can deal with it, because I'm used to technology that s not so user friendly. The remote is a 5 out of 10, as you need to hit the buttons several times for it to execute. (can be frustrating)
Cameras could have had a little bit wider viewing area, that is what I would have liked. I think you need at least 20 feet out to get a good wide angle on these.

Other Thoughts: Not a bad set up, for what I paid... it was a great deal. Hopefully they last a long time.
