4 out of 5 eggsSolid system at reasonable price

This review is from: NETGEAR VueZone Home Video Monitoring System – 2 Camera Kit (VZSM2700)

Pros: reliable, easy setup, cost-effective

Cons: None noted yet

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 extra cameras and have been running all 4 in my home. System has worked flawlessly from day 1 - we live in a 4-level townhome and the router and base station are in my office on the lowest level of our home and I have not had any problems with reception or camera connectivity all the way on the top floor (it may be noteworthy that I have a top of the range blazing fast Netgear R6300 router that supports the latest standards). I signed up for the monthly service to give me more flexibility in when I want to cancel the service. Someone else had posted previously that it was difficult to change from the annual option once subscribed, so I just went with the monthly right out of the gate. The VueZone app works great on my iPhone and over the web. The system and cameras offer quite a bit of features, but I have really only used for periodic real-time check-ins on our nanny and family during the day and when I'm traveling. I highly recommend this system.

1 out of 5 eggsAn unreliable, poorly made toy

This review is from: NETGEAR VueZone Home Video Monitoring System – 2 Camera Kit (VZSM2700)

Pros: Small cameras

Cons: Unreliable, motion activated recording doesn't work, extremely poor video quality, unit fails to upload recordings for remote viewing, online portal crashes

Other Thoughts: I purchased the unit to monitor our small store and record the activity of potential shoplifters who have been plaguing our business. Alas, this unit is hugely inadequate for this purpose. For one, it turned out to be impossible to make unassisted, motion-triggered recordings: regardless of the settings in the VueZone portal one of the two cameras that came with the system only takes static snapshots, the other one randomly takes either photos or video clips (even though both cameras are set to make motion-triggered recordings). The portal frequently freezes and I have to exit the browser and log in again to view the recordings, of which only a small proportion actually uploads.

It is impossible to view the video feed while the camera is recording, which in a busy commercial setting makes it close to useless; it is also impossible to view feeds from two cameras simultaneously.

The Netgear technical assistance is non-existent. After a couple of hours of waiting for either telephone or live chat support I am still waiting.
I will be returning this product and advise potential users to look elsewhere for a reliable security system.

2 out of 5 eggs3 days

This review is from: NETGEAR VueZone Home Video Monitoring System – 2 Camera Kit (VZSM2700)

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: Eats batteries, fell down after 3 days. Cannot control camera or view while a motion activated recording is ongoing.

Other Thoughts: I loved it for the first day, then I noticed how the battery drained to quickly. It fell down, even using the adhesive grips, after three days. I've been waiting to talk to tech support for 2.5 hrs and still on hold. You get what you pay for--these are ok, but do not use the adhesives that come with the cameras and be prepared to buy lots and lots of expensive batteries.

3 out of 5 eggsSecond review

This review is from: NETGEAR VueZone Home Video Monitoring System – 2 Camera Kit (VZSM2700)

Pros: Easy setup
No wiring to cameras

Cons: Costly for quality of camera image

Other Thoughts: This is my second review to add some additional thoughts. I originally rated with one egg, due to the disconnect that occurred at the end of the premium trial. My beef: if Netgear is aware that the trial end will require a base station reboot, it should be noted in the setup instructions AND the premium trial should be optional. In my case, I was no longer at my vacation home and could not do the reboot. Therefore, the camera no longer worked and I could not utilize it for the purpose of distant surveillance of my vacation property.

I finally got a neighbor to reset the base station and the system has worked as advertised since that time. If fairness to Netgear, I wanted to do a follow-up on the system itself, not just the flaw in the premium disconnect.

It works, I can use it to check the camera view and I have gotten e-mail alerts when there is any movement in the camera sight.

My original troubleshooting with Netgear was done by internet chat, and although the resolution was not to my liking, it did resolve the problem. Also, I was impressed that I got a follow-up phone call a couple weeks later to make sure things were working. Good job Netgear.

I cannot give a rating above 3 eggs, due to the lower quality of the images and the premium charges for basic operational features. I will say that the setup of this device is incredibly easy. Aside from the disconnection at the end of the premium trial, I have not had any issue with loss of signal. The android app works well for cellphone viewing. I am disappointed that I am unable to expand (zoom) the image with the standard android action of pinch/or spread with two fingers. I suspect this is intentionally set up that way in the app, to again encourage purchase of the premium package.

1 out of 5 eggsProduct performance - Not so much

This review is from: NETGEAR VueZone Home Video Monitoring System – 2 Camera Kit (VZSM2700)

Pros: Easy setup
small size
wireless

Cons: low resolution
no pan, tilt, optical zoom
costly for performance level
Accessories (exterior mount) are too expensive for the quality of product
loses connectivity - have to unplug to reset
Yearly fee for basic features on similar devices

Other Thoughts: Purchased to monitor our vacation home. Setup was easy. Came with a 30 day Premium trial - no choice to use with "basic" until after return time expires. I have used Foscams before and have been pleased with their operation, however, this produce was attractive because no wires to connect. The image quality and operational features are not on par with the Foscam, but again, no wires!

Here's the problem: I checked the website and app many times while I was at our vacation home - worked fine, always connected. Now I'm 1100 miles away and the moment the "premium" trial ended - I cannot connect. Per tech support, I must physically unplug the base unit to reset. Am I supposed to drive 1100 miles?? Based on my experience, I am inclined to believe the problem was created by the trial expire. If true, this should be included it set-up information, I cannot recommend for applications such as mine based on my experience. Bottom line, a costly purchase of a low-grade unreliable product.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Cranky,

Thanks for your kind words regarding the quick setup of VueZone. We do apologize for the trouble you had when your premium trial expired; you definitely should not have had to reset the system just to view your cameras at the vacation home. It sounds like you already contacted NETGEAR support for this advice -- please get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com with the support case number they gave you, so we can investigate your case and get in touch with you.

We're here to help and please let us know if you have any other questions or feedback in the meantime.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

5 out of 5 eggsEasy setup

This review is from: NETGEAR VueZone Home Video Monitoring System – 2 Camera Kit (VZSM2700)

Pros: Setting up the cameras and base is easy enough for the beginner (like my sister or dad). (I can't say that for myself, thus being an IT Professional for 20+ yrs)

The information on the base made it easy to hard code the mac address on the router.

The cameras synced like a charm. I'm entertaining the thought of continuing the premium service, so I can get 1 or 2 more cameras. It's fun to watch my bored cat.

Yes, it's still a novelty item for me, but I feel like a spy!

Cons: You need internet, preferable with good bandwidth, and a router to connect the base.

I have a small house, so the connection isn't an issue.

Other Thoughts: Good buy for the money versus paying monthly fees to an alarm company.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Images of Self Control

This review is from: NETGEAR VueZone Home Video Monitoring System – 2 Camera Kit (VZSM2700)

Pros: It's a no brainer... Do your homework before commiting to a costly monitoring contract with some of these big alarm companies..

Cons: There is always a new to improve on any system. Over this past year, I have seen a number of upgrades.

Other Thoughts: After our home had gotten broken into and a good bit of personal items were taken I started looking for a modern system that would put me in control. I did several weeks of research and was somewhat set back as to not only the cost but also the lack of control that I would have. Monitoring companies with cameras cost anywhere from $46.00 to over a hundred dollars a month. Several companies did not supply the cameras which came later at a higher price. When something happens the alert did not go to me but to the alarm company first and then they would call me. And contracts boy there was anywhere from 36 to 48 months of commitment. With Netgear - Vuezone the alert comes directly to me on my smartphone as a text. As I am getting the alert the cameras are already recording the activity. At any time from my smartphone tablet or computer I can watch the recordings or look at the images. I am in control every step of the way. The recorded videos or still images are saved on the Netgear system not in my home which makes the security even better. And for less than $5.00 a month monitoring fee the Vuezone system is a no brainer..

5 out of 5 eggsGreat camera

This review is from: NETGEAR VueZone Home Video Monitoring System – 2 Camera Kit (VZSM2700)

Pros: Great Camera
I am amazed that Costco now sale them the battery life is 6 to 9 months taking lots and lots of pictures. Nice to see what is going one while away from home. Get to see if that UPS or FED EX package came or not.

Cons: Non to date

Other Thoughts: There are no words to describe how you feel when you can check things at home to know all is well. And know your family and pets are safe and what current weather is also.
