5 out of 5 eggsWork Great

This review is from: LaView LV-KDV0404B5B Complete 4 Channel Security DVR System Easy DIY Four 520TVL Infrared Surveillance Cameras (No HDD)

Pros: Easy setup. I like that you can go to Laview Website and see videos for total setup. I also like that I can see live video and playback Recorded Videos from the system on my I-phone from about anyware.

Cons: You have to get a hard drive to record. Newegg needs to have a link to available hard drives that you can use on this system. I had to go to the LaView Website to see compatible hard drives so I can order it from Newegg.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks pretty well

This review is from: LaView LV-KDV0404B5B Complete 4 Channel Security DVR System Easy DIY Four 520TVL Infrared Surveillance Cameras (No HDD)

Pros: I put this up at my house for more security. We haven't had any problems in our neighborhood but it made me feel better. The operation of this thing is very simple. I easily hooked this up on my android phone. I also installed the software on my desktop PC and laptop.

Cons: The night-vision is lacking something big. It's almost impossible to see anything at night with these cameras. I have some others that work much better with a different system. If you have outside lights near these cameras it will fix that problem though.

Other Thoughts: Pretty good for the money. I through a 1TB hard-drive in it and set it up.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice system for the price

This review is from: LaView LV-KDV0404B5B Complete 4 Channel Security DVR System Easy DIY Four 520TVL Infrared Surveillance Cameras (No HDD)

Pros: Very nice system. Inexpensive.

Cons: The manual is lacking big time. It didn't come with a hard drive so I had a terabyte hard drive that I formatted and added myself. It took and and sees it in the storage menu but doing the instructions from the manual, it will not record motion detection as it says.

Other Thoughts: I see people complaining about the cables. I accidentally messed one of mine up and went ahead and purchased a 100ft cable here at newegg and it was less than $15. No big deal.

4 out of 5 eggsEasy to setup

This review is from: LaView LV-KDV0404B5B Complete 4 Channel Security DVR System Easy DIY Four 520TVL Infrared Surveillance Cameras (No HDD)

Pros: Easy to setup, comes with all screws and cables needed.

Cons: Haven't found any thus far

Other Thoughts: You have to get your own hard drive. Not a pro, nor a con. You have to go through the trouble of choosing a good one, but you get a good one...

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: LaView LV-KDV0404B5B Complete 4 Channel Security DVR System Easy DIY Four 520TVL Infrared Surveillance Cameras (No HDD)

Pros: - good camera quality
- easy to set up
- easy to install a hard drive
- long cables
- remote viewing over internet explorer works well
- comes with a single composite adapter for old cameras if needed

Cons: - didn't support native resolution of the old 16:10 monitor I connected to it, adding extra jagginess to the camera feeds
- no AAA batteries supplied with remote
- Blackberry app not compatible with all blackberry phones (Blackberry's fault really)

Other Thoughts: decent DIY setup for anyone needing an affordable security system that just works.

Sadly, remote viewing works with internet explorer only, unless you can find an activeX add-on for your browser of choice. the upside is, the remote viewing using internet explorer works very well and doesn't take any messing around to get working.

The remote viewing app for blackberry isn't compatible with all blackberry phones, and is really just a free ddns app that you can find many variations of on blackberry world. LaView does provide free ddns service, but the app is screwy at best and probably not worth the trouble getting set up if you aren't tech savvy.

all in all, a good buy for a good price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

This review is from: LaView LV-KDV0404B5B Complete 4 Channel Security DVR System Easy DIY Four 520TVL Infrared Surveillance Cameras (No HDD)

Pros: It is cheap and performs as advertised so far it has done its job perfectly which has been to deter whoever it is keying my car and help me catch them if they do it again.

Cons: Its "night vision" is a little weak and the quality is degraded significantly but the people who just see the camera outside don't know that

Other Thoughts: great product for the price

5 out of 5 eggsVery pleased

This review is from: LaView LV-KDV0404B5B Complete 4 Channel Security DVR System Easy DIY Four 520TVL Infrared Surveillance Cameras (No HDD)

Pros: Good picture, wasn't aware of the version that includes cameras with an output 80px wider for similar price, but I'm still happy. I was a first-timer with private surveillance, and I've got the P2P web op working, motion-initiated recording with customized detection zones, and some other advanced features with little headache.

Cons: No big cons. Combo deal included a desktop HD, and while I'd prefer an AV HD, an ext'd warranty guarantees replacements for 5 years. When the HD dies in about 2 years, it'll be a minor hiccup. As a side note, the infrared nightvision is a little lackluster, but functional indoors or in close quarters. The DVR interface is a little wonky, but functional and flexible.

Other Thoughts: If you happen to be stuck with mobile wifi (no wired routing), like me, you can still get this DVR connected. Know that you won't be able to use any old USB wifi adapter. Get a universal adapter that gives you a wired ethernet connection, like the ioGear Universal WiFi Adapter, as recommended in the Q&A section here. Configure the adapter manually on a PC, following the ioGear printed manual to enter your wifi password manually. The iogear adapter will save the password and then work with your LaView DVR. In my case, I'm using a Verizon Jetpack MiFi, and this works. I found the LaView "How to setup P2P" video (on youtube) helpful, because the printed manual doesn't mention the LaViewCloud website. For a hundred bucks, this is a no-brainer.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice "basic" system

This review is from: LaView LV-KDV0404B5B Complete 4 Channel Security DVR System Easy DIY Four 520TVL Infrared Surveillance Cameras (No HDD)

Pros: I bought this system both for home security as well as wildlife surveillance when Newegg had it on a Black Friday sale for roughly a third of the MSRP. The DVR unit itself is quite light, with the control board taking up about a quarter of the inside space, the rest is able to be used by your choice of SATA HDDs. The top half of the machine can be removed to install or replace a hard drive without invalidating the warranty.

Installation of everything was pretty simple and straightforward, just attach the yellow (video) cable to the Camera In port and the red (power) cable to the 1-to-5 power splitter. The cameras themselves attach to your desired surface with three two inch long screws for security.

The menu system is pretty rudimentary (think UEFI BIOS level of complexity) but sufficient for the purpose, easily navigable with the included mouse. The unit is able to output up to 1440x900, which allows for more details to be seen.

Now, performance. In both light and dark situations it performs very well, much better than the cameras you see in convenience stores. I would also say the 50 feet of range in the dark is quite reasonable, and the picture is very sharp in black and white.

Cons: The only cons that I can see with this system is that the cables may be a bit short. For a single story home or small business it should be fine, but for anything bigger, you might have to look for some extenders.

Other Thoughts: For the price and the features you get, I find no reason not to recommend this system, especially if you find it for half or less of the MSRP, which, being around Christmas, shouldn't be hard.
