3 out of 5 eggsWill know soon

Pros: Small, very small in fact. Its about as wide as two 3.5" hard drives next to each other.

Cons: Was doa. Make sure that your dvr fires up before installing everything. Otherwise, you will waste your precious time taking everything out and packing it back in the box for an exchange. They do not just do an exchange for the DVR (should offer some help here). No hard drive mount is included which is ridiculous, so you pretty much have a drive that is loose inside. Only 4 power outlets for an 8 camera system and they use a funky connection like a 1980 keyboard instead of anything you could use to add them. That's just silly...

Other Thoughts: I did an exchange, so we will see what the next one does and I will write another on the actual operation. It's been a week since I sent it back, not the fastest turnaround. Exchanges should be able to send it out again while the dead one is on the way back. A hold on a credit card would be fine until the swap is complete but I guess its an option only other retailers offer.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible rubbish

Pros: - Complete turnkey kit
- Decent cameras
- Easy to set up basic operation

Cons: - Web-UI requires an ActiveX plugin to view video or even save logfiles
- Have to use its clunky mouse-only UI for many features
- No documentation on other network features like RTSP streaming or event notification
- Poor support: manufacturer could not provide any documentation, just some sketchy Windows software they presumably got from the chipset vendor
- Unstable: it killed the first disk I put into it, a spare Seagate, which I replaced with a WD Purple (DVR) disk
- Unreliable: it lost connection to the WD disk until I rebooted it, causing a 5 week gap in my security recordings.

Other Thoughts: This product is a case of over-promising and under-delivering: it technically has lots of features, but they come with so many caveats as to be irrelevant. I could overlook that as long as it did the core job of recording video, but it failed at that. No alarms were raised, it just behaved as if the disk was missing.

Since I have no confidence it'll stay working, I'll be replacing it as soon as I've done the research to find a unit which delivers on its promises.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: The cameras are great. Install was fairly easy as well. The user interface on the DVR and the app are it bit clunky but nonetheless are still a lot better in comparison with other systems. Its very small and easy to hide.

Cons: It took a bit of time to program the cameras recording.

4 out of 5 eggsNo HDD

Pros: Not sure yet. It is still enroute...

Cons: I realized after ordering it and it shipped that it said No HDD. Who wants a dvr without a hard drive. Why are you selling this product?

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Misleading advertisment!

Other Thoughts: False advertisement. The camera comes with this package is low resolution, not the claimed 1000TVL. I hoked up to my 1080P TV and looked at the real time video shown in my screen, very disapointing. It can not even distinguish the characters of my Samsung labtop logo, which is about one inch high and put one meter away! The image is full of interlacing lines. It is doing the interpolating job pretty hard.
If you do not look at the video, the overall menu interface seems like 960H, but what do you need that for?

5 out of 5 eggsNice Security System

Pros: Very good DVR kit for the money

Cons: To view the DVR video streams remotely from a web browser requires the installation of a Windows basedplugin. I primarily use Linux, so this is something of a pain. The DVR can be accessed from any browser (including Chrome/Linux Mint), so configuration tasks, log viewing, etc. can be accomplished. However, to view the actual video streams requires the plugin to be installed.

Tip: Download the plugin from your browser, then stop the browser before installing the plugin. The plugin works with IE, Firefox, and Chrome.

Other Thoughts: I have one of these installed at home, two installed at work, and two more on order. I've installed/maintained several low-end DVRs over the last seven years, including Night Owl (decent) and Zmodo (absolute junk) These are definitely the best DVR kits I've worked with.

Even though I need 16+ cameras to cover our entire building, I opted for the four-camera DVRs. This means I will need multiple 4-camera DVRs to cover the building, as opposed to one or two 16-camera DVRs. My reasoning for this decision is three-fold. First, I've been told by a tech at LA-view that only the first four ports of the DVR can record at 960H due to limitations on being able to process and store multiple images. Any higher port records at a degraded level. I want all of my video streams to record at the highest level possible. Second reason is that with multiple DVRs, I increase my storage capacity. I can store 4x times the amount of data with four 4-camera DVRs than I can record with one 16-camera DVR. Third reason is that because of the way the kits are bundled it's actually cheaper to buy four 4-camera kits than the kits with more ports.

BTW, the cameras sell separately for $79 each, so the entire 1TB kit is cheaper (at $250) than just buying the four cameras.

The night vision on the cameras is amazing. I have eight of these mounted on the roof of our business (24' high), and they capture detail out at to least 100' with very minimal background lighting (we back up to a nature preserve). They perform much, much better than the 400 TVL cameras they are replacing.

The DVR has HDMI and D-sub out, which is a nice option, although the HDMI will only display 1080P, so it will won't work on older monitors/TVs, and only 1920x1080 or greater resolution.

To get this to work through your firewall, you will need to port-forward ports 8000 and 8554 (RTSP). Since I'm running multiple DVRs, I changed the 8554 port on each of the DVRs (configuration screen), and also used different ports at the firewall for port 8000 (what the mobile app uses to initially connect).

Mobile App -> firewall:8001 -> dvr1:8000
Mobile App -> firewall:8555 -> dvr1:8555

Mobile App -> firewall:8002 -> dvr1:8000
Mobile App -> firewall:8556 -> dvr1:8556
